    Nice to see you promoting Shelter Point. I'm in BC as well, very near Campbell River, where they're located. They're making good whisky! It's on my shelf.

    I had to pay $100 USD for my Ardnamurchan AD/02.22 Cask Strength in California. I like the Alberta prices, Love the Craigellachie 13 ($55 USD)! Glen Garioch 12 is good too.

    • @Watchman999
      @Watchman999 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Alberta is a special place for whisk(e)y nerds. Also the only province in the entire country that distilleries and UK retailers will ship directly to. I recently imported a bottle from Bunnahabhain and the price escalated primarly due to shipping costs. The duty and taxes were only about $20 CAD. I probably won't do it again very soon but overall prices of whisk(e)y in Alberta are more variable and at times higher than control "state" locales.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci +3

      Yeah Alberta pricing can be lights out on items that aren't particularly popular or allocated. But it is the only province in Canada that gets hit really hard for price gouging like Watchman suggested. For information Alberta gets Springbank. The odd store keeps it at $135. One posted it for sale tonight for $250. Still I would have half my whisky if it wasn't for Alberta. Cheers Dileep 🥃

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci +1

      You nailed it Watcman. A special place for whisky and also a place where allocated bottles can sell for hyper inflated prices. Cheers buddy 🥃

    That Naked Malt is like the Mellow Corn of Scotch. It’s a great value. The Arran Bodega is a great recommendation. I have a bottle open and I can find no fault in the nose or palate or finish.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci +1

      That's a great comparison to Mellow Corn. Naked Malt is not the best Scotch you'll ever taste but the value proposition is near the top of the charts. I'll be sad if/when Arran Bodega catches up to its peers in price because right now the price is in our favour. Also, I finally got around to trying the Angel's Envy Rye the other night that you have me a sample of. I poured half the sample trying to decide if I should buy a bottle. Recently went on sale for $80 here and I'm stumped. I'm gonna have to pour the second half of the sample. Certainly a dessert Rye! Cheers man 🥃

    Love the Naked Malt! Still trying to get the Ledaig

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci

      The Ledaig seems darn near impossible to find in Canada, but would be a good add on to a U.K. order! KWM did have some samples from broken up advent calenders and that's how I tried it. Maybe they still have a couple 🤔 Glad to heard you're loving the Naked Malt! It's a surprisingly great little malt! Cheers Lars 🥃

    A great list with great whiskys. The Strathcona Here in Victoria has bought 4 single casks to celebrate its 20th anniversary. My favorite ( Premium recommendation) is the G&M single cask 19yr Ardmore fully matured in a refill Sherry hogshead. Pricey but worth every penny. They will ship to you as well.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci

      I've been drooling over that Strath G&M Ardmore ever since it came out! I'll be attending the Victoria Whisky Festival for the first time this year and they'll be pouring all of the single casks at it so I'm eagerly anticipating trying it! Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers Drambler 🥃

    Great gift guide Matt! Daftmill makes some beautiful whiskies if only you could get it! Blended malts from Douglas Laing especially the Scallywag Winter Edition they release every year always hits the mark for me and I received it as a gift once and I'd be happy to receive it every year :) Cheers!

  • @r.awilliams9815
    @r.awilliams9815 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Hmm...Christmas party bottle would be Glenfarclas 10, not too expensive and generally well liked.
    Gift for someone I actually liked, Springbank 10.
    Sherry monster, Macallan or Glendronach, around 15 years old.
    Peat monster, Lagavulin 16.
    Local, something from Dry Fly. I have a bottle of Washington Wheat that I quite like.
    Legendary Scotch for those who have deep pockets and really want to impress somebody...I have 2 candidates. Springbank 1966 Local Barley and Ardbeg 1967 28 year old Signatory bottling. Either of those would knock even the most advanced Scotch collectors socks right off. In the 90's, those were $150 bottles...sigh.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci +1

      All great recommendations! I suggested Springbank last year and thought I'd switch it up a bit, but I'd happily receive a Springbank any day of the week. As an avid fisherman I love the Dry Fly Bottles and logo. Somehow I've only tried their Vodka(lol) but I've seen a few reviews of the Washington Wheat and the Triticale. In regards to the Springbank 1966 local Barley and the 1967 Ardbeg...those are dream bottles. Of another Era and absolutely nectar of the gods I'm sure. Glad to hear you've got such stunners in your collection. Cheers eh 🥃

    Hi Matt
    I love watching your reviews, I also love your picks, I have a bottle of the 2006 daftmill winter version I bought about 3 years ago,but have yet to open, have 2 bottles of the sanaig, which is great whiskey, but I'm writing to you about a whiskey you should pick up if you can, and that's the irishman 17 year old, I have my second bottle coming, it's easily the best irish whiskey I have ever drank, and I love redbreast too death,but this whiskey was reviewed by whiskey Jason, and you can look up his review to see what he says, not just my opinion, I know where you can get the last known bottle too exist, if you are interested let me know, cheers brother, and merry -Christmas !!!

      Great to hear from you again Frankie, always a pleasure 🥃 Glad you've got a Daftmill, hard to come by but worth it from my experience. Thanks for the Irish Whisky recommendation. I'll be looking into the Irishman 17 year old. Whisky Jason is one heck of a hard reviewer so if he loved as well as yourself I'll definitely take notice. Cheers my friend, Merry Christmas 🥃 🎄

    Great list Matt and I love the categories you laid out. Arran 18 is great, Ardnamurchan, Macaloney's, Shelterpoint are not available in Ont which is a shame. Finding Daftmill and at a MSRP will definitely make you a hero. The Craigellachie 13 is a great value and Glengarioch 12 is great too. Tobermory 12 is excellent for an age stated value bottle. Cheers for the holiday season 🍸🎄

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks Rohit! I really like your suggestion of Tobermory 12! Finding Daftmill is definitely a struggle! Cheers buddy 🥃

    Thanx for the channel Matt. I live in BC too. Any preference ordering from BSW or Craft Cellars in Alberta in terms of product selection or prices? Black Friday sale at BSW was very tempting! Merry Christmas.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching! Always excited when a viewer is from B.C. as well! In regards to which I prefer, Craft Cellars is more professional than BSW. They ship quicker and have less stock issues. It took 3 weeks for BSW to ship me something recently, and after they told me a bottle was out of stock, yet still listed for sale on their site weeks after my purchase. They figured it out, but it took a long time. What I can say about BSW is they get some cool bottles, prices can be rock bottom at times and shipping is cheaper. Craft Cellars does have crazy sales occasionally. Basically, I use and trust both, there is a time and a place for both. Hope this helps! Cheers 🥃

    Hey Matt, thanks for the awesome list man.. a close friend of mine will be visiting Canada, Toronto next week and she'll stay there for a month and I'll probably ash her to hunt a Shelter Point for me.. but I'm curious which one has a more Sherry flavour.. 10 or 12 ?? Btw, I noticed you've changed your background music lol.. Thanks again for the great and video and have a great Christmas. 🥃

      Hey, hope you're doing well! I might be to far behind this comment to be helpful but...Unfortunately I don't think the Shelter Point 10/12 made it out of B.C. and Alberta. The Shelter Point store does ship across Canada but that might not be an option in your case. They are both Ex-Bourbon cask. Glad you enjoyed the Christmas list! Hope one of these land under the Christmas 🎄 Cheers eh 🥃

    Does any distillery just make traditional expressions ie no sherry, wine or port finishes?

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Před 8 měsíci

      Hey Ross! Yeah a ton do. Though it's a tricky question because of that word traditional. Go back far enough and it would be traditional not to age it. But I think you mean to ask if any distilleries really highlight the distillate over cask. probably the most helpful answer might be to say a ton do use Ex-Bourbon casks, and some use refill ex-bourbon which is probably the best way to highlight distillate over cask character. Use of Ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks are extremely traditionally. Less so virgin oak or red/white wine. But really they were just looking for any vessel to store and move the whisky in back in the day. The odd fish cask got filled too if you believe some accounts. Because Sherry was very popular it would be shipped to the U.K. in casks(transport casks) and so these would be filled with whisky after being emptied. If you suggest a particular type of region/style you like I could suggest some ex-bourbon options if you like. Hope this helps and happy new year. Cheers 🥃

    • @rossflowers540
      @rossflowers540 Před 8 měsíci

      @@whiskyonthewestcoast thank you. I didn’t realize that ex sherry casks were used traditionally ie historically
