Historical Record: Erroneous Popes in the Church's History 【Before Vatican II】

Fr. Gregory Hesse, S.T.D., J.C.D. Doctor of Thomistic Theology, Canon Lawyer and former secretary to Cardinal Stickler at the Vatican from 1986-1988.
(Fr. Hesse was not a member of the SSPX.)
He was ordained in 1981 in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican.
He held doctorates in both Thomistic Theology and Canon Law.

We learn from the history of the Church that St. Athanasius had to "disobey" Pope Liberius. But such apparent his "disobedience" was not real disobedience, but rather true obedience to the Church and it's constant Teaching (Tradition).

CATHOLIC OBEDIENCE IS ALWAYS OBEDIENCE WITHIN TRADITION.
But many Catholics, forgetting that Catholic obedience is relative to the Faith and Tradition, think obedience is an absolute, with only one opposite, disobedience.
They are mistaken.
True obedience has two opposites:
DISOBEDIENCE [Error by Defect],
and
FALSE OBEDIENCE [Error by Excess].
