Star Trek Discovery Season 5 is soon to be released with no doubt hilarious reviews. But Paramount+ isn't just going to let it go quietly into the dark, Variety has written a massive article that goes in depth into various Star Trek series and gets more insane as it goes on. What started as a video just because one sentence pissed me off, turned into a complete deranged rant by the time I got to the end of it. It turns out there is something more annoying that making a TV series you don't understand. It's making one that you DO understand, and decide to do the exact opposite. With Strange New Worlds and Section 31 coming up, this article does not paint a hopeful picture. But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)
Time to just continue the usual activities rewatching all the old stuff, on free sites or owned DVDs etc so we arent giving tthese companies any more money.

I would love a series where the future time police come back in time and erase Michael Burnham’s mother.
It would undo ALL the events of discovery, and restore the original timeline.
The show is definitely dreadful;
Never has a series celebrated the gross incompetence of terrible writing and the willful hatred of the producers for the IP they inherited. Their idiotic belief in elevating deplorable characters like Michael Burnham (who assaulted her captain, guilty of mutiny, started an interstellar war that destroyed 75% of the fleet). You also have the Mirror universe version of Michelle Yeoh's terrible campy character (a genocidal Empress who subjugated most of the Galaxy "apparently") is then given a pass and even celebrated by the characters over time.
*The purpose of these two characters is to have the few viewers yell out "Slay Queen!" whenever they look up from their phones every time something loud happens or a female character spews out some cringey feminist drivel to a male character.
The hero worship on these two characters by any secondary or tertiary characters (NPCs) around them is downright cultish. "Oh yes let's leave our loved ones behind forever and follow our messiah 1000 years into the fucking future!"
In reality, if competent writers and producers were involved with this show, Michael Burnham and Empress Georgiou would either be prison or dead. The heavy-handed writing that allows this series to carry out its insipid drivel simply skims over rational thought and logical consequences for character interactions and character machinations.
The only reason this carried out this long is because of an ironclad contract and an executive suite made up of idiots!
Thank God its done after season 5. 😒

No, but the _writers_ should.
And think about it from the viewer's perspective: if a viewer had liked their show, and decided to go back to watch the 700 hours of backstory, they would say "this is nothing like what I watched before that I enjoyed and wanted to see more of."
I mean, for example: if a person's first introduction to Star Trek had been TNG, and they had enjoyed the series, they could go back and likely would enjoy watching TOS. Not so much with nuTrek.

To a degree, yes. But in a lot of cases, it is made very, very clear what side you "should" support. Whenever you get an episode about one group unjustly suppressing the other, the supressing side usually ends up falling off a cliff at the end of the episode.
Not to mention how almost every single episode about the prime directive falls flat on its face and half of them present the federation as being morally defective.

Episode 1 TL;DR:
Officer has a bad dream about a diplomatic mission. They try to get their captain to turn around and stop it. Captain says the mission is too important to risk. Officer grabs a gun and mutinies, alone. They are thrown in a cell. Mission goes badly and everyone is killed, except the mutineer. Mutineer is now very, very sad.

Yes, if only the show was bad while simultaneously having and catering to garbage opinions, it would be better. As a lifetime Star Trek fan, I cannot bear to watch Discovery. Woked to death.
Kind of like watching polls. Numbers swing wildly up and down and parties react, When the polls are not a current snapshot they are often delayed and can't possibly be an exact determination of what is about to happen. The utter Chaos that all these new ST series have put the franchise in has made for a complete failure to recognize unity of purpose, unity of mission. Conflict between crew has always been a secondary subplot to legacy ST not the theme that drives the series. Unity of crew has always been paramount to reaching the mission parameters. This constant conflict from within denotes no unifying goal. Throwing humanistic scenes and plots into this mix just makes for a scattered objective.
Star Trek ended with Deep Space Nine. I’ll even give Voyager a pass, reluctantly.
After that, parallel universe.

I watched the first season and tho it started badly I soldiered on and it ended up being somewhat enjoyable. The ending of that season wasn't great but I wanted to see season 2. Then they introduced young Spock and Girl Boss was his sister. Ugh. They shit the bed, then went to sleep, woke up, and shit the bed some more.

Star Trek, much like Star Wars, died when people took over the franchise that didn't understand, or care about, the franchise.
Disney bought Lucasfilm because of Star Wars massive success and because they wanted brands that appealed to males and not just Disney princesses. So what did they do? Change it so it will appeal to a different audience and make it a girl brand.
Plus, they saw the money it was making and used the 25% rule to keep it to themselves.

@@emirhanfidan2018 Lower Decks has it's moments but I still think overall it's mediocre. I'm afraid we've lost what we loved about Star Trek and Star Wars forever. It's like they don't mind these shows not making money anymore. Paramount is willing to just keep putting out content they think pleases the narrative instead of focusing on good stories and writing. It's a shame and I wish they wouldn't do it and it makes no sense to me but it is what's happening.

I think it's fair to also say that later on, the 17 who were left out of 400 could have genuinely also liked it. But certainly the first 400, seems suspect. Critic and audience scores often differ though, because their approach to it all is different. Critics aren't there to be entertained, they are there to critique.
And for every one of them that dropped off season to season were negative, but they would rather not leave a review at all less they lose access for their media jobs.

My high school buddies and I became fans of Star Trek when it aired in reruns in the 1970's. Star Trek died when 'Enterprise' went off the air in 2005. Yeah, I even like 'Voyager' and 'Enterprise.' I watched the first season of STD and was disgusted. I quit my subscription to 'All Access' and haven't looked back. Put simply, it is NOT Star Trek. It hasn't been since J.J. got his claws into it. Also, the way they've treated Bill Shatner is a disgrace. Fortunately, we still have the old series and movies and Captain Kirk still lives.

Chakotay portrayed a Native (South) American. So Beltran being a Mexican-American seems pretty on point.
Oh, and to those of you intrigued by DS9? Jump in. The water’s fine. In fact, it’s great. Seasons 1 and 2 are setup. Season 3 gives us our first look at how the series is gonna go. Season 4 ramps it all up. Seasons 5 through 7 are a roller coaster ride of awesome.
When I watched ST in my youth, TNG was my favorite, but now rewatching many years later, I am starting to think DS9 may be the one I like the most now.
I foresee a problem with "Mission Impossible in space".
The original was a spy story, and the primary obstacles facing the protagonists were everyday questions of space and time; e.g. can we get into a specific room for precisely two minutes, can we catch that individual escaping on a train, can we disguise ourselves in 30 seconds.....And often the hero would make use of some gadget or technique that was SLIGHTLY beyond what was available in the real world, but the audience could believe that it was possible to exist, that it might even be in the possession of the CIA....
Now: how can you translate THAT into the far future?
The audience won't KNOW what is or isn't possible. The world of Star Trek is FULL of gadgetry that seems like magic to us. How can we be thrilled by the protagonist doing something difficult? We won't KNOW what is difficult.
And the writers will have to build a whole encyclopedia of technology for that time and place - in MUCH more detail than any existing Star Trek series - because the technology, the door locks and cameras and vehicles, won't merely be incidental to the plot. Rather, every device will be make-or-break, every gadget will decide the fate of the protagonist - but the audience won't KNOW how it does that.
e.g. imagine the hero must penetrate a locked door. In the original M.I. we all KNEW that he could, with skill, use a metal tool to open the lock. But in the future? Will doors use facial recognition? Are the owners instantly notified by live video of anybody approaching? Can the doors of this time and place in the future be opened at all, and does it require a lot of skill or a little? Did we just see something impressive or something routine?
It can't work. The storyline can't impress us if we don't know what's impressive.
I'm sorry but I don't see how this show concept can work. If they try to make it work, I predict that the dialogue will fill up with so much exposition that the show will become a laughing stock.
Hollywood expects star trek fans to be apple fans, consume and purchase without question.

I was pleasantly surprised at how Picard managed to reverse itself and be way more entertaining in S3. Less wokeness, more sci-fi.
Both the Sloan Sec 31 arc and the episode "In the Pale Moonlight" are beloved by DS9 fans because they're the counterpunch to regular rhythm of Star Trek. They stand out and are done with restraint and complete understanding of what the writers were trying to show about the dire needs of war and survival. Those episodes forced ugliness out of the characters we had not seen before, but in a way that felt both unexpected and earned.
Kurtzman Trek can never understand character and subtlety in this way.
"He was actually a Mexican-American but he portrayed a Native American." Ok, two things. One, have they never heard of this concept called "acting" where people pretend to be people they're not? And Two, do they not perhaps no that Mexicans are mostly a mix of Spanish and indigenous peoples... that is, native Americans?
Voyager had an advisor who got outed as being a Jewish guy from New York and LA who liked to PRETEND he was Native and somehow landed the paid gig to tell them bullsh*t because he fooled Hollywood people into believing him. He even said he was Cherokee from Montana and that didn't raise any red flags for them. We have Blackfeet, Crow, Shoshone, Nez Perce, Kotenai-Salish, Gros Ventre and others, but no Cherokee. It would take only the barest of research to see he was full of sh*t. That's why everything Native on the show was straight out of cowboy movies from the 60's. Acting is one thing, but the writing had some serious flaws because they were so worried about cultural appropriation that they hired a guy whose whole identity was that he appropriated Native culture so he could make money off people trying to be sensitive.
They should have just let Chakote be Mexican or at least not leaned so heavily on it as magical. It's space. It's the Federation. Nobody cares what kind of human you are and that's the whole damn point of Star Trek: actual equality.
@Blodhelm I actually liked that they had a Native American alien on the show. To a kid, it wasnt that cringe, and it was cool to have diverse cultures on an American show. The mysticism aspect in a show focused on science gave it more spice, like Diana on TNG. The thing with diversity on tv is that its not usually that diverse. But Native American is the true exotic culture in America, in our eyes. Its so starkly different, but also familiar. It wasnt long ago that Europeans were practicing ancestornworship and spiritism. I hope we see more representation of Native American and Caribbean cultures, by actual experts. Hollywood right now doesnt understand white culture, let alone black or native. And how can a New York jew portray Oriental collectivism? They dont. They just hire Asians and write them as white American.

I have been watching Star Trek for over 50 years and yet I cannot abide anything made in the last 15 years. Having to sit through things like string. New worlds is not just unpleasant, it is actual torture.
I'm one of those who went to conventions in the '70's, watching endless reruns and saw all the TOS movies on opening day. I think some of that did "keep the franchise going." I haven't watched since, really, seeing the level of writing in B5 and the mess that was Enterprise. Can't care less what they do now.
It tends to be very boring. To some extent you could expect that from something that's meant to precede the original series, but Enterprise was even older and was MUCH better.

Strange New Worlds had some great points though. I love Babs as their doctor. The Star Trek series doctor has always been a key character. (Ignoring Crusher of course who I would not have minded being removed permanently instead of Yar) I also really like Mount and Peck as Pike and Spock. Beyond that I see red shirts.

Section 31 I think had about 3 episodes in DS9, and that series was great because it forced Sisko who didn't live in paradise to choose between his Federation principles and (potentially) the survival of his crew, not tooo often but enough so that DS9 was a realistic critique of Roddenberry's secular humanism whilst still existing in that Universe. We had Garek, Quark and the Ferengi who forced us to confront the fact that no every culture in the galaxy lives by the Federation's principles, and the setting forced us to live with the consequences of decisions made in past episodes.
The best part is about Section 31 is that they never went overboard with it, unlike Voyager who took the edge off the fear when dealing with the Borg section 31 was occasional, just like Admiral Leyton in Season 4 who was willing to conduct a coup to (as he saw it) secure the Federation against the Dominion.

I'm a fan of both - or at least, the original Star Wars trilogy, and ST:TOS, TNG and DS9. _Because_ they are different, they're not trying to be the same thing or do the same thing. Peak Star Trek lasted from 1987-1999. It was a nearly perfect sci-fi concept, challenged only by Stargate. The writers could do almost ANYTHING they wanted.
New cultures, new challenges, new societies, new moral questions. Just go to a new world or have them show up on the ship/space station, there's no reason to change the central premise or themes of The Federation or space travel/discovery.
And YET, everyone after 2005 thought that changing the formula was smart and necessary...because they were ideologues. They killed my boy...

Tons of Stargate was an imitation of Star Trek, but they did it with creativity and adapted it to their story so it was still enjoyable. Miss those shows.

Now that was a show where the writers could do almost anything they wanted; a show where the protagonist gets cloned in an episode about a cannibal villain, and instead of it being resolved in a single episode, they actually had the gumption to follow it through for an entire season as a major story arc. A show full of sex, swearing and violence that somehow managed to trick the mainstream into thinking it was totally okay for family viewing at prime time on the BBC because it was "aliens" so it didn't count as sex, swearing and violence.
Meanwhile, Star Trek itself ended up having to steal an entire show concept, characters and major story arcs from Babylon 5, which remains probably the most revolutionary sci-fi show until The Expanse came along and demonstrated just how good a book adaptation can be.

I still am of the opinion that Discovery was never meant to be a star trek prequel, it was just meant to be a new space based IP but would never have survived since its so bad (see:Rebel moon.)

A lot of modern writing is produced by modern writers who cannot sell their terrible work so they latch on to some IP they despise. You see it over and over again in every genre. Some directors even explicitly hire people who know nothing about the original because they don't want to make the original stuff.

I just got an idea for a Star Trek spinoff.
I was watching an old WWII movie, "12 O'Clock High" about a struggling bomber squadron in the early days of WWII.
A new commander came in, and demoted some people, promoted others. One bomber captain he considered a coward he placed in charge of one bomber, and promised to give him every misfit, every incompetent, every malcontent in the bomber group for his crew. He was ordered to give his ship the name "Leper Colony", and paint it right on the nose.
So I just thought of a Star Trek show, _not_ a comedy, _not_ a parody... "Star Trek: Leper Colony". Obviously that can't be the name, but the idea, set in the TNG era, is that a new admiral takes command of Star Fleet and cleans house. Sees the poor record of one captain and gives him the "Leper Colony" treatment. He's given a lesser ship, maybe Voyager or Equinox class, and a crew of everyone who doesn't fit in the Federation utopia.
Each episode would be interesting because we'd see how inadequate people dealt with situations faced by "the best ship in the fleet". Yes, I'm thinking of the Barclay episodes of TNG. And as a ship and crew, rather than being the pride of the Federation, everywhere they went they'd be viewed with contempt and/or amusement. They would face mockery and distrust, and the presumption of failure. The pilot episode (since I'm stealing ideas anyway) could be based upon the movie "Down Periscope"... only without the comedy.
I picture the chief engineer as the bastard child of Scotty and Kaylee from "Firefly". Being instinctively good with machinery, but having to constantly patch and make do because, hey, they're the Leper Colony, so they're put at the bottom of repair and supply lists and priorities.
They'd have a supply officer like Tony Curtis in "Operation Petticoat"; a scrounger... maybe make him Ferenghi!
Here's a fun idea... make the chief medical officer a devout Christian. How he became a Christian could be as entertaining as why Shepherd Book became a Shepherd in Firefly.
The nice, for me, aspect of this show is that there would be no DEI; if you have a crew of "inadequate", or inferior people... that means they all have to be straight white males. Can't be portraying any of the "protected classes" as being less than stellar, after all.
I think it would actually be a success if they avoided the endless, navel-gazing exposition that appears to have affected ALL modern tv shows.
An example scene would be the Leper Colony ship limping back home.
Having had to scrounge old, abandoned battlefields (like Wolf 359?) for parts to patch the ship, she gets into an unbalanced fight, saves the day and, as I said, it limps back home... like the NX-01 Enterprise did.
Only, instead of being met by a fleet of federation ships to escort them in... they're directed to a remote corner of spacedock, and the captain gets reamed by the admiral because the ship, between its patchwork repairs and battle damage, is an eyesore.

Growing up it was one of the few times my family and I really spent time around our father. He was always on the road as a field service mechanic. I was never a big Star Trek fan but still enjoy popping on the old shows. I forget the channel coming out of the US but there is one where it was playing episode after episode for like 2 hours. We got rid of our cable some years ago. Better memories than the trash they call Star Trek now. I've yet to actually watch a full episode of Discovery. Won't even try the rest.

Discovery isn't Star Trek.
I've watched every Star Trek series and movie, and Discovery has nothing to do with them. They've ignored canon, setting, theme, and character history. At best it's a reboot, cutting it free from the Real Star Trek. Even Abrams tied his alternate universe to the original movies, though acknowledged that it was separate.
Discovery forgets things from earlier in the same episode, monsters suddenly move slow, aliens that kill BILLIONS are forgiven because they say they didn't know those people were alive, when they obviously did and just didn't care, then modern politicians get cameos just to yank the audience out of what little immersion there is. It's gibberish as an excuse to grandstand while flashing lights distract people with the attention spans of goldfish.
At least Abrams had the decency to say it's on a alternate timeline.

A lot of people don't end up in their field of study. It happens. I have a degree in molecular biology, but the city where I live is saturated in biologists so I ended up working as an electrician.

It was when he started going on about the JJPrise and mentioned he wanted it to be like a hot-rod I thought "well, it was a nice run while it lasted. They've given an narsastic moron the keys to the castle and he's busy ripping out the foundations for his new lens flare machine and life size model of the Millennium Falcon".
The thing that really gets me is the audience reaction to Picard Season 3 and the buzz in the fan base and they STILL don't get it! The clips of the Star Trek short with Rosa Salazar you showed is a perfect example of the contrast in writing too. Star Trek TNG already tackled a story of a socially awkward crew member that was not a "team player" and hard to get on with but instead of taking the smeg out of him and straight up bullying tbh(very progressive and inclusive of them), the conclusion to the episode was it's not just on the socially awkward person to learn to get along and simply transferring them away would be a failure on the officers part. It turned into Reg Barclay story arc. Rosa Salazars short? The officers and crew laughed at him, belittled him and then he gets killed off with Tribbles and it was supposed to be funny 🤦 Yep, as an Aspie I totally felt the "love, acceptance and understanding" of modern Trek with that little gem.
THAT is the problem the fan base of Star Trek and Star Wars have with the direction they've been heading with both franchises. They talk diversity and inclusion but have zero clue wtf that actually is. The truth of the matter is, Star Trek TNG introduced a righteous society where we put humanity above the cause of money and profits, but our actual society has evolved to become a mixture of shady Romulans, Ferengi, and Orion syndicate. We are diametrically opposed to everything the show actually stood for, and now, like most other shows, it has completely lost touch with what people actually want, forcing more of the woke garbage culture that most of us oppose.

Things just happen, they happen to everyone, and mostly they're terrible. And this is 'Nu Trek'.
