My first kitchen was a metal, robin's egg blue masterpiece by a company called St. Charles circa 1956. It wasn't large, but it made an ingenious use of space. It had stainless steel countertops and stainless, built-in Thermador appliances. One lower cupboard had a huge shelf that swung up and out before locking in place and held my stand mixer, blender, and toaster -- all plugged in and ready for duty. Decades ahead of its time. Jane Jetson would have loved it. I certainly did, and miss it to this very day. I used car wax on all the metal doors and drawers, and that kitchen was as shiny as a new TBird.

I’m so happy you appreciate more traditional styles and antique/vintage pieces. I don’t see that much on the tubes these days. I went from traditional to the more modern designs and colors a few years ago and I’m so over it. Never want to see gray and white again. I’m bringing some of my antiques back in. Yeah to Granny!

Thank you for sharing your insights. Want to add that we used drawers for all our lower kitchen cabinets (did use standard cabinet under kitchen sink). The drawers are deep, full extension and are designed to handle up to 250 lbs. I recommend everyone designing their kitchen to look into using drawers. Not sure if they're a trend, but they sure have made my kitchen storage more accessible. (They look good too)😊

Same here and yes, it’s the best. We have a 36” wide drawer under the cooktop that holds all our cast iron, so yes, they can be beefy. I never want to rummage through a stack of things while bent over.

    • @giwilreker
      @giwilreker Před 2 lety +4

Yes!! I did that too and recommend it to anyone redoing a kitchen. I do not understand undercounter cupboards, such a mission to pack and get the stuff at the back. If you're going to redo, do drawers! High five!

A true butler pantry is a separate room. Granny had one, stuff doesn’t get dirty if it’s not in the kitchen. Lots of storage! A countertop to make drinks cause all the stuff was in there. The dishwasher was in the dish room. Fantastic!

I live in a bubble that protects me from trends. A few years ago I had white ceiling tile installed in the kitchen of my Vermont Farmhouse. At first I was surprised that you didn't mention it, but then I realized that it probably wouldn't work for most viewers.

After I designed what I considered a perfect kitchen, my husband starting buying heavy cast iron in every size and shape. It's like have a heavy weight set in the kitchen. If I had known I would have made an area just for his weights. It's hard to plan in advance, but always go with more sturdy storage then you think you need.

I had one, in my first house. The actual kitchen was small, but the butler's pantry made up for it. It was a hallway type situation between the kitchen and the formal dining room. One side had glass fronted upper cabinets. The other side had solid cabinet doors top & bottom. Counters on both sides. It was great! Specially on holidays.

Oh, my! You are checking a lot of "validation" boxes for me. I'm bringing back formal dinner parties like my parents gave in the early '60s: fine china, crystal, silver, damask linens, and even salt cellars with teeny-tiny matching silver salt spoons. We just approved the design of our new, fairly industrial, kitchen where we are choosing the highest quality appliances we can afford and embracing the stainless steel finish. Our designer even suggested a cream and blue-gray checkerboard tile floor to go with our blue-gray cabinets and cream quartz countertops. We are keeping the original bead and board ceiling in the keeping room. We feel very pleased with our designer, but it's always nice to hear outside confirmation of ones choices when embarking on such a large project.

Brilliant, as usual. When we bought our home, many years ago, we had small children as well as dogs and cats. When we were deciding on a floor for the kitchen I told the tile people that I needed a floor that looked as good dirty as it did spotlessly clean. I LOVE my floor! Our little children are all grown up and out of the house but we still have dogs and cats. And my floor looks as good as it did those many years ago. We’ve done so many renovations and changes to our home over the years and have even discussed changing out the floor in the kitchen. But I stand fast! I love my floor!

My granddaughter moved into a NY City apartment as she is a professional dancer & was accepted into a top graduate program. She wanted only white & black minimalist style in her BR. Garret😊! So excited to see a video today. I know it's not kitchen-related but I just got my curtains hung up in the living room in my new house! I took your advice from other videos and hung them high up by the ceiling, with a thicker rod, and they go to the floor. I'm going to hem them a few inches eventually when I can unpack my sewing stuff, just so our robo-vacume can get under them. The look so chic and so luxurious! I'm very excited about them! I also used them as an opportunity to bring color into my space. Anyways, thank you for making videos. Someone tried to tell me I couldn't hang them that high or have them that long, but I knew better because you are the professional and you told me better through your videos.

It's not new - but an under- the -counter microwave is awesome! Easy to use, easy to clean, and you can lock it if you have "littles" that love to press buttons! Also, an induction stove top! Heats up super fast, cleans like a breeze and doesn't remain hot to the touch. Two things that make my kitchen user friendly!!!!

Like you, I gravitate to some classic elements including the checkerboard kitchen floor. Got mine ten years ago. While I love black and white, I chose cream and dark beige so there isn't a jarring contrast to the adjacent wood floor and light warm LR tones. (BTW, I also LOVE blue and white porcelain. The sink curtain thing, before you even showed the pic, immediately transported me back to stringin’ beans at my mammaw Joan’s kitchen table when I was a kid. 💛 she also had the coolest sink I’ve ever seen. It was all one piece and really deep, but also there were these like ribbed kinda flat sections on either side, I guess for drying dishes? We used to watch old timey horror movies and laugh, and I had my own beautiful complete set of china in her china cabinet to play with. We've always loved a chef's kitchen. Currently we are completely redoing our kitchen. We had a long narrow pantry beside it (only 6ft deep) and we got rid of the pocket door but left a 5ft opening were the door and pocket were. We have placed a counter depth but taller fridge, regular width but no freezer style because the matching freezer is beside it with a grill above that joins the two together. This space also includes a regular wall oven, floor to ceiling pantry shelving and a small laptop station below the window. In the main part of the kitchen we are going with a stove hood that includes a warming rack, and a showstopping red enamel gas stove with electric oven. Since my husband is a journeyman joiner/cabinetmaker, we are also going with flat panel, book matched, edge grain fir cabinets. Can't wait til its all done.

Wouldn't that cream and white checkerboard floor in a kitchen be wonderful to bring together the white appliances and sometimes off-white cabinets or other elements in our kitchens? Great idea! Still thinking about going with emulated VAT in a muted color to honor our mid-century home. This would be a nice way to use that material.

Hey there, hi! Garrett, you are a gem! Love all your videos, but this one was so on point for us. We were scheduled to start a kitchen reno this past April, but in Jan made the decision to put it off a year for various reasons. I've been feeling a little sad lately, because I know we would have been a little more than halfway through. But the ideas I got from this video have made it all worth it! The T-shaped island - we don't have space for an island, but will have a decent sized peninsula. I definitely want to look into that "T-shape" at the end as a way to add am extra seat (I think we could sacrifice a bit of storage there). And using 2 materials for the countertop and backsplash - love it! We had picked out a honed, super white quartzite for both, but had some hesitation about upkeep on the countertop after having marble in a prev home (and the price was a bit hard to swallow, too...) but if we keep that for the backsplash and sub something for the countertop. Well, I love that for us!
Final comment- I totally laughed when you mentioned the recessed storage spaces. We are working around HVAC ductwork and a plumbing chase at opposite corners that just can't be moved and so that's exactly what we're doing. On one side, a shallow larder/chef's pantry that will be flush with the lower cabinets on either side, and (I kid you not) a shallow glass-front cabinet in front of the plumbing chase that will likewise blend in with the surrounding cabinets. Hopefully when it all comes together it's Le Chic approved! 😉

It is so nice how you point out realistic maintenance for some items that you talk about. The built in china cabinet in the kitchen, for example. Although it looks really nice, having to constantly scrub grease off the glass doors would drive me crazy. If I had a traditional dining area, I would create a built in china cabinet in there instead. Dusting is so much easier!

Garrett, what a great kitchen list--thank you!
We are remodeling the kitchen of our 1924 Storybook-style cottage, & putting in a pantry wall, with five, 7'6" high, 20" wide, 18-light doors that were originally from Harvard's Paleontology department. (I found them on eBay😉!) The glass in them is the original, old wavy/shimmery glass, & our pantry wall will be about 10 feet wide.

We have ceiling fans all over the house. Our house was built in 1920 so we have archways all over our house. We had a built in China cabinet before our dining room became our kitchen and our kitchen became our dining room. I have cabinets with glass that show off our beautiful dishes. We have those recessed areas. I want a China cabinet in that area since it is now my dining room.

  • @Craftgirly

Yes!!!! Built in glass cabinets!😀It’s going in the kitchen I build for sure. I’m obsessed with China, and will be having a display in the kitchen. I would love to have an additional China display cabinet in a butlers pantry for sure but considering it’s only me and hubby, that’s going into serious hoarding territory🤣. I did at one point think what if I collect a plate (different sizes)or bowl from various sets, mixed matched like they do in the UK, that way I can get my fix of lots beautiful patterns lol. The industrial chef kitchen also appeals to me because I’m very practical and to me a kitchen should look like an actual kitchen, not semi hidden away, looking like another sitting room - I hate that trend! My last house was an English country cottage with a kitchen that had a little red gingham curtain (my cats played hide and seek in ) as well as set of three pull out wicker baskets under the sink.

Good Morning Garrett, first of all thank you for your videos. I am watching all of them, and the thing that constantly attracts me is to work on the ceiling, so I am keeping that in mind and for sure will try to incorporate it in the next home.
The little curtain in kitchen, I had it during my growing years back in India at mums place, the reason then was cabinetry’s are expensive so mix it up with little curtains, however I have heard my mom complaining about it a lot as they get dirty a lot, needs wash and maintenance and all that stuff.
And oh yeah regarding the glass cabinets, i love them but then again the maintenance in and out held me to do this time in the kitchen, I was not ready I guess because the house and the backyard and the pool in itself is a full time unending maintenance, not complaining as am enjoying the house. But yes few years down the line when we downsize, those glass cabinets are on the list:)

Our new hood is a curved Parisian copper hood in gunmetal with light brass trim. In a previous video you talked about glass backsplash being dated (agreed). What do you think about a slab glass backsplash? Or can a lacquered backsplash be used? But can get scuffed easily. In my small kitchen, the only area that needs a backsplash is behind the stove which is about 8 feet long. Thoughts?

Great ideas. Thanks. We try not to make our home kitchen like a restaurant kitchen. I did something horrible….I have a recessed wall that is perfect for a countertop pantry or glass display cabinet exactly like what you showed in the video but I chose to cover that wall up so that it is flushed throughout. I have never renovated a kitchen in an old condo like my current kitchen, I agonized over that recessed wall, I don’t think standard IKEA pantry type cabinets will fit that space, those glass cabinets will need to be custom made and an interior designer will have to be consulted. My contractor wanted to build up that section for me, he suggested not going to Ikea because the building is old with unusual measurements that require custom cabinetry. After visiting my neighbours’ and looking at their renovations, I opted to cover up the recessed wall, sacrificing those custom above the countertop display glass cabinets. Feeling super guilty……..but personally, I don’t need those glass display cabinets. I know it’s fanciful. Hmmm. Still feeling guilty.
