Three items that are timeless in home architecture and decor; Stone, Brick, & Wood. All three of these things can be manipulated with other decor items to look modern and classic. There is nothing worse than when people have a disposable mentality with their homes and decor. It is so wasteful, not environmentally friendly, and cringy when I see people rip out entire kitchens and bathrooms with marble and granite. If they stopped to realize how long it took the earth to create that, they may not be so quick to replace everything every two years in the name of being trendy. Everything is cyclical and trends come back again in new and fresh ways. There is always a way to incorporate things or edit what you already have, to make it look good. I appreciate your perspective of mixing classic (even antique) with new and modern decor. I love the transitional style and think it gives interiors a more homey and comfortable feel without being stuffy or dated.
Love red brick and totally dislike all the painted brick walls, especially white. It screams Live, laugh, love.
I love how my refusal to jump on trends has my house right back in style. LOL Mahogany antiques, oil rubbed bronze, warm walls. I'm still planning to update with fresher pieces.
If we're going back in time, can we please skip the early 90's mauve and blue? That'd be great.
Yes. I have learned to just do what I like... maybe my style starts a trend. I have have got some great deals on burled walnut furniture with claw feet, and intarsia furniture at second hand stores. I live in Sweden, and everything is new is midcentury modern reproductions. So, so finished with that.
Albert stole the show 😭😭😍😍 18 years, that’s incredible 🥹
I was tempted to paint the wood fireplace mantle at one point and later became so glad I did not. What happened is that a friend with a very similar mantle painted hers, so I got to actually see the "after" in person. I never told her, because why would I, but hers convinced me not to do it. An easy change for our nice oak kitchen cabinets was to change out all the hinges and handles it was well worth it and no refinishing needed.
So happy to hear you say, don’t paint “wood cabinets “. Built our house in 1993, and you got it all cabinets and trim are oak!!! My husband has held me off from painting any of it. This really the best feature in our home not builder grade at all all in like new condition. We painted all the walls on the first floor this year and have to say have gotten very positive comments from family and friends and as you said, it really brightened up the look of our wood features!! ❤️
I love my 90’s oak trim around my windows!! So pretty with the right treatments around it!
Thank you for validating the use of wood and red brick in home interiors. We have a red brick fireplace and knotty pine tongue and groove paneling in my 1959 kitchen and love them. These details add warmth, charm, and interest to the space like nothing else can, imho.
Absolutely!😊😊😊
Yes! I’m proud of our red brick fireplace
Yes!! @Pinnfeathers! Our house is 1968 Split-Level Suburban. We have the floor to ceiling brick fireplace with flanking bookcases and wooden beams in the Family Room. I wanted to paint SO BADLY! My husband put his foot down and this is my favorite room.
I recently purchased a vintage 70s Asian styled table. It’s a round pedestal with ming chairs. Complete with a ton of ornate abalone and mother of pearl inlay and a huge lazy Susan. It ain’t for everyone, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s ME! 😂 It coordinates perfectly with a vintage, moody set of Four Seasons from my mother. Sometimes we just like what we like and “I love that for ME!” ❤
I will be so happy when mahogany and cherry from 80s and 90s come back again and I will be in style
Albert another 88 years
Our house style is a lovely mashup of traditional/Victorian/library/industrial steampunk-ish stuff, and so I'm glad to hear you say good things about mixing historical pieces into modern spaces. That's my style.
Sounds great!
Wood stained trim always looks better with some color on the walls other than white. White can make the wood look flat and 'dead'.
Thank you for your comments about wood, brick, and antiques (particularly mixed in with more modern pieces). I love these things and they aren't going away at my house, but what a relief to hear a designer say it.
My pleasure! I’m glad you enjoyed the content. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven’t already, and join our very valued subscriber family. 😊😊😊
Hi for me the thing that hurts when I see people tear it up.... Parquet flooring. I think it is beautiful and craftsman design that is so incredibly hard to find nowadays. If it would fit my 1967 house I would totally have it. My home had the original red oak flooring in it. I just had it sanded and restrained a modern colour.
Never had parquet flooring or wood flooring either and I’d love both!
I totally agree about parquet!
My husband built our wood cabinets out of solid wood (every shelf, back and door). I love them 💕
That is awesome!
As a child one of my chores was dusting our Victorian furniture. To this day I hate it, but other than that, everything else I liked.
I'm very nostalgic for the smell of Old English oil or Liquid Gold. Every Saturday my mom and I oiled all the mahogany furniture.
@D D Lemon oil for furniture smells divine as does beeswax polish.
When I was much younger I gladly inherited old furniture from family members when they passed. Now they are antiques and I cherish them. My latest adventure is pulling together a 450 sq ft 1 bedroom condo. Tiny but the top floor with a nice size terrace. Mixing some of the antiques with Ikea white Kallax, and a sofa table against the wall of wrought iron and marble. Other touches of black wrought iron and metals in accessories, like lamps and wall sconces. It has such positive energy.
You just gave me the relief of knowing I could mix my Victorian with my modern! Thank you and a kiss on the soft cheek of Albert ❤️🙌🏻
My pleasure!🐶🐶🐶
I knew a bunch of Norwegians and Danes in the 1970’s and they always had old oriental rugs and one or two antique/Victorian pieces along with their Scandinavian modern furniture in their MCM houses. Looked great!!
When I was a teenager, my sainted mother allowed me to paint some bedroom furniture to my taste. It was actually high quality furniture and I never should have touched it. I later did strip away my paint job and did my best to restore it--a huge amount of work. Since then, I do not think finished wood that is in reasonable shape should be painted. Like most senior adults, I have a blend of decor from many decades of purchases. I receive compliments from visitors on my home and decor. Thank you for your insights, and I appreciate your respect for the past, as well as enjoyment of the new.
PLEASE keep making videos like this!!!! This is for everyday people that live an everyday life but also want to be unique and stylish. You have really helped change the way I think about interior decorating. “Stylish” doesn’t mean “on trend.” That may seem very obvious to you but very powerful to me and you are the one who gave me the epiphany. THANK YOU!!!!!!
My pleasure! Thank you for supporting the channel by subscribing and watching.
Albert is the most adorable 88 year old gentleman. How do you not carry him around all day? Excellent video, thank you!
Thanks so much Mikki! He gets tons of love, but he doesn’t always want to be held or carried so we always respect that. Things are pretty much on his terms.🐶🐶🐶
I have custom made dark maple cabinets in my kitchen, from 1960s. All this time I have been putting off the idea of ‘refreshing’ them with paint. Thanks to this video, I feel confident about keep them as is. They are beautiful
Ahhhh finally some appreciation for the Victorian/Edwardian/art deco period! Yes! It's about time! Lol...as the old adage goes, never throw anything out - because "everything old is new again"! Anyways - I feel like my time pref of tasteful and restrained Victorian is finding its place again. *relief* Also, happy birthday, Albert! That's a lot of dog years to clock up! And thanks as always, Garrett, for your practical and balanced sane approach to trends.
My pleasure! Thanks so much.🐶🐶🐶
I have reclaimed tons and tons of old Barn planks over the last few years, sometimes right out of the dumpster. When I take my sanders to them, (and I mean angle grinder sometimes!) the darn things reveal such beautiful honey colored wood it's unbelievable what beauty lies beneath those beat up old things. I've placed them one by one on the walls and the look is so warm and cozy I just want to stay in the rooms and cocoon all day! I would never consider painting wood. It's nature personified!
I love all warm metals but my husband really is drawn to oil rubbed bronze so I lean into it! We have very different aesthetics so whenever we find things that we both like it feels special
I have light oak floors. Several of my friends have dark oak floors. I will say that the dark floors look dirty and dusty quicker than my light floors. Everything shows on the dark. Love my lighter floors.
I agree. Every shoe print showed. Was so happy to lighten it up to a mid-tone wood.
I love hearing that some of the more traditional items and colors are coming back "in." Who knew that I would ever be a trendsetter!?! 😆 Your point about refinishing rather than painting wood pieces and trim is spot on if one doesn't like the color of their wood, but doesn't want to paint it. I had tile counters in two homes - HATED them - and would never have them again! I couldn't easily get them clean, and rolling things out was difficult. If you like the charm of tile in your kitchen, get a tile top bistro table, a tiled lamp, or a mosaic accent piece to put on your counter. (Your clean solid surface counter!) 🤗 Thank you for more great tips and trends, Garrett!!! I always love your videos, especially when your fur babies get a cameo!!! 🤗🥰🤗 Colleen
Thanks so much!👑🐶🐶🐶👑
Thank you for reiterating the timelessness of wood.
You bet!
Wow 18!!! That’s such a blessing
I like brass too! I won't change it out for bronze.
I love the warm look of wood, it's classic. You can always add plants, some accessories, painted walls etc to lighten up.

@@GarrettLeChic absolutely, I love your channel.

Dated Trend..Velvet sofa slipcovers. Heck, it’s even lightweight and washable. Great way to not having to commit to velvet sofa but get look. Old Man Albert is SO lucky to have been ADOPTED/Rescued by You and your loving Hubby.❤
Thanks so much! We love him dearly.🐶🐶🐶
@@GarrettLeChic us Subscribers do too! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🐶🐾
I just say I'm going eclectic. Some crap wood needs to be painted, lol.
So glad Albert is 18! 😊
🙏🙏🙏
Love Art Deco
Painting damaged wood that cannot be repaired is ok in my book. Congratulations to Albert!!
🐶🐶🐶
I’m not 100% happy with my kitchen cabinets. They’re hand made and this home is very much a craftsman style home. But I have rehabbed homes in the past, and even top quality cabinets will never match the strength of these. They’re solid! It’s kind of a love hate relationship lol. I have updated the old paint job on them to brighten them up, and changed out the hardware to oil rubbed bronze. It helped at least make them look better 😊
18. What a lovely dog.
Happy Birthday sweet Albert. You always steal my heart!
😊 thank you
I lived in several homes from the 1920-1940s.....the tile countertops were beautiful and worked THE BEST. Anyone that has these vintage countertops should give them a chance!
Agreed!
Gonna paint our 80’s ugly brownish tile which is dverywhere in the bath. I think. Could remove it but try painting first.
Happy 18th Birthday to Prince Albert!!! He is awesome! Garrett, I have been following you for almost a year but have never commented. I wanted to thank you so much for teaching me to NOT follow trends, stay true to my personal style, and WAIT for the right thing-don’t just put something somewhere to fill a void-wait for the RIGHT piece! I have completely redone my black & white living room (still adore black & white-just not there) and transformed it into a light, soft, welcoming space with a traditional/ slightly coastal/slightly art deco vibe. You are amazing and I hope you keep posting! I also love when you say something that cracks you up and you let out a little chuckle! 😅 Thank you again for all your help-keep being awesome!!!
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Jennifer! I truly appreciate all your support and I’m so glad you have been enjoying! Much more to come including today at 10am PST. 🐶🐶🐶
I love oil rubbed bronze. I have it throughout my house. I purposely put it in in the last couple years.
I love how you love and treat your fur babies. It reveals how kind and loving your heart is. Keep up the great videos…..I learn so much from you! Aloha from Hawaii!
Thank you so much! Glad you are enjoying. Thanks for watching, and for hopefully joining our very valued subscriber family. :)
I love victorian!!
Awww Albert.. happy belated 18th birthday 🎉..
Natural brick can also be dyed in a way that allows it to breathe if you don't like how it has faded or want to disguised a repaired area so that the new matches the old. This is still less destructive than painting which will forever need maintenance once done.
I enjoyed the tile countertops at my house in college. Even with the grout it was easy to clean and disinfect and because of the light color it was very simple to make sure the counter wasn't dirty. Very utilitarian.
Red brick and wood my fav
6:52 The cutest little old man ever! ❤️🐶 Wish you a beautiful lucky year, Albert! With your cute brothers and precious daddies! ❤️ Hugs to all of you!
And thanks for another great video! 👍
Thank you! You too!🐶🐶🐶
I personally just don’t do trends, my house still has unpainted trim light oak floors and my furniture is mostly mahogany and dark cherry. I just decorate with what I love which means thrift stores and flea markets.
Thanks for sharing Angela!😊😊😊
Aww haha Happy Birthday Albert!!! ❤❤❤Can we please get a mini vlog of Albert's day? Does he ever bark? Does he play? Does he make cute sounds when he eats? Does he bump into things? We're all dying to know.
I speak about Albert and his brothers fairly often in my videos. 🐶🐶🐶
I'm totally here for refinishing or restain wood trims and features! Sometimes, sun fading makes the original tone look orange and dated, so re-staining can make all the difference! 😌 On the tile counters, I think a larger, 8"x16in or larger tiles could look so cool while reducing the grout lines!
Still like a bit of the Tuscan feel. Agree with not painting furniture. Some have taken beautiful piece and ruined them. Also stop painting everything gray!
When we moved into our house it was only about 15 years old. The entrance and dining room chandeliers looked like they came from the Haunted Mansion in Disney World. Just dark, dreary and hideous. Poof, they were gone in a week!
Smooch that pooch, dear Albert, for me! Thanks for your informative videos!!
8 is my lucky number too! Happy Birthday Albert 🎉
Albert is so scrumptious!!!😍
You go Albert! He is adorable.
This was something I definitely needed to watch. I'm so tired of seeing people getting "creative" and destroying beautiful peaces of wood furniture.
I'm also being allergic to the word "dated". What is it exactly? What will it say? Why would I like something a period of time and then stop because it's been dated? Seriously?
Anyway, just subscribed 👍
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed. Welcome to the channel. It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family!😊😊😊
Albert is sooo precious ❤ ❤❤
So happy to see sweet Albert ❤!!!🎉🎉🎉
Happy Birthday sweet Albert!!🥳🥳
Garret, you must be a wonderful doggie parent to have Albert still going strong at 18 yro.💓
Thank you for another wonderful video!
Thanks so much! The pups are well taken care of and loved so much, plus they care allot about each other too. 🐶🐶🐶
Great video. Spent so many hours scraping paint of the solid oak doors and cabinets in my first 1940 house. Please, don't paint good wood. Spot on about Victorian and Art Deco. There "influencers" are painting those marvellous pieces too. Please don't paint them. In Sweden people are painting Gustavian era and midcentury teak furniture, such a waste. And paint ain't cheap in northern Europe, about $30 USD a litre for good quality.
Thank you, and thanks for sharing!
This has been one of my favorite videos! I so love your content & especially the pups! Sometimes I feel I can't relate. I have a 1950 farm house in Ky with all original oak floors, 10" baseboards, curved doorways & original built-ins. You answered a lot of my questions! You're the best!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate it.😊😊😊
Sounds beautiful!
Your home sounds magnificent!
Bless sweet Albert ❤! Happy Birthday sweet boy!
Ultimately if you like it, it works for you, period. As a cat mom, we have way too much leather/faux leather but it works for us as it is easy clean. As our babies pass over the rainbow bridge, I want to start considering more texture to our space.
I do love my Saarinen Womb Chair with ottoman in boucle' . Have had it over 15 years, so way better the latest trend it experienced, so a classic of sorts. Definitely would not want more than one piece of anything in that fabric though, keeps it unique in your home. Doesn't look "trendy " if you have just one nice piece of a certain kind of thing. I did choose the oil rubbed bronze hardware for all interior doors , because I knew I would always love it as the years go by, same with my Art Deco, because to me , old is classic, and my collections from that period are never going away until I do! 😅
Thank you soooo much for this video. I moved into a home that has solid wood doors, hardwood floors, and wood baseboards and window frames. It is lovely but I thought maybe it was so outdated that I needed to at least paint the baseboards and window frames. I looked and looked for videos to help me but found nothing--until this one. Thanks for giving me the courage and insight to keep it like it is. You're the best.
You are so welcome! Thanks for subscribing and watching.😊😊😊
Just refinished the original hardwoods in my home (built in 1924) a dark mahogany. And I was nervous it would look outdated but there were a couple water stains I wanted to camouflage. Glad they are coming back bc I actually love the dark floor look (makes it feel a bit more cozy)
OMG! Happy birthday, Albert!!!!
Happy Birthday, Albert!! Have a super 88(1)8 year !
I would like oil rubbed bronze if it had more...bronze. So many pieces I see look like they were spray painted a dull brown
Or the pieces are black, not bronze at all.
My husband talked me out of painting our kitchen cabinets and I’m so happy he did !
I'm going to pretend you talked about Victorian furniture just for me and I will plug my ears and go "lalalala" when anyone tries to tell me different. Victorian and that Art Deco waterfall stuff. Apparently, in re: boucle showing stains, boucle takes dye really well. I may try that because I actually like the look and texture, but it looks so dirty so easily. YES to oil-rubbed bronze! So warm and earthy. Also, hi Albert! Happy 18th birthday! Please register to vote.
🐶🐶🐶
When I was a preteen, I had a mad obsession with all things “Victorian.” My mother’s aesthetic was the polar opposite (Danish modern …it was the ‘60’s, lol), so I’m thinking that’s why. Needless to say, I’ve grown out of it and now find it extremely overdone and clunky compared to the many other styles out there. I’m a neo traditional eclectic in my old age and love the toile wallpaper in my dining room, even though it makes real estate agents cringe. Chaq’un a son gout! Great video. HBD belated to sweet Albert! ❤
Thanks so much!🐶🐶🐶
God bless his little heart and his brothers as well! ❤️❤️❤️ I have a new house, not two years old yet and I’m changing things already 😳. The struggle is real, lol.
👑🐶🐶🐶👑
Happy Birthday Albert! I love to see you as an extra added treat. What a wonderful boy!
🐶🐶🐶
I'm so happy to hear you say that Garrett , most of my furniture is Mahogany and Cherry , I Love the rich tones of these woods , I've always made it work by adding just a few trendy pieces .
Happy belated birthday, Albert, you little pumpkin. ❤
Thank you! 🤗
Happy birthday, Albert!
My goodness Garrett you look wonderful in this video. So healthy and happy. I watch all your videos and you are always handsome, but today you look amazing. I really like your design ideas and also you pets. Keep up the great work.

Awww. I love Albert so much. ❤
Great video content. You are encouraging us to find our own style with classic materials instead of just following trends.
Thanks so much! 😊
Albert is so sweet! I have a couple “old men” doggies, and the “new kids” dogs here know who’s in charge.

Happy December Birthday darling Albert ❤🐶
Happy birthday Albert! 🎉🤗
Happy birthday Albert!
Happy belated birthday, Albert!!
Happy Birthday Albert!!! Amazing 18 😊🎉
I get a little cranky when I see Instagram diyers paint all of their wood trim. “Oh this 90’s oak is so out.” Turns out, when you bring in the right pieces and and paint color, they can be stunning! So glad I didn’t fall into the painting my 90’s oak trim. That dark builder-grade brown wood from the 80’s though… hmmm 😂
Happy Belated Birthday Albert! 💕
We love you Albert
Hello 👋 happy birthday Albert 88 never looked so good in dog years 🎉 great video 😊
