- This is the first video in a series that features the new baby gorilla at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. His name is Kayembe, he is the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo in their 139-year history. This video features the new baby gorilla and his surrogate mother Fredrika (or Freddie). Kayembe was born on 10/26/21 and weighed 3 pounds, he was born about 6 weeks premature. (Nneka's anticipated due date was 12/1/21).
These Western Lowland Gorillas are at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The birth mother (Nneka) did not show proper maternal care after giving birth. Luckily, Fredrika, who raised 4 infants of her own, stepped in and has taken care of the baby ever since. The baby is bottle fed by zoo staff. He receives formula and orangutan milk. (His name was announced on February 17, 2022)
Kayembe was the first gorilla zoo born in Cleveland.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, Kayembe 10/26/21
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

I am sure with how fragile Kayembe was at birth and the zoo having to take him, they will monitor that very closely. I believe the may still supplement him. At least they had been. So happy to see he has such a great mother, even if she is a surrogate. Freddie is amazing.

Is this the new baby now named Makembi from Cleveland Zoo? Did his mother ever bond with him, or is Freddy his surrogate mom still raising him? He looks well fed and loved. The cuteness factor is of course 10+.😍😍😍😍😍
Press releases say it’s Kayembe. Also that Freddie/Freddy/Fredrika is now the one in the troop taking care of baby. It is now April 2024 , His birth mom Nneka became a favorite playmate. I was told Nneka did nurse him some, but I never saw that. Fredrika is his mom for all he knows. Nneka had 2 babies one years ago in San Francisco and then this Kayembe .
His birth mother does bond with him sometimes now. She had another baby and is ok with the idea of motherhood now.
Just wondering if any studies have been done comparing the rate of development of babies whose mom’s early on ride them high on their shoulders to those carried on the belly? I always think the wee ones up top have such a great view of their world and actually seem to look around in wonder, while the belly-clingers are seeing everything in shadow and upside down.

Kayembe was fed with bottles by humans then Freddie began to lactate- hormonal changes brought that on. Humans continued to give bottles to supplement what Kayembe was getting .

Do you know if baby nurses from surrogate or if it is fed by zookeepers?
Fed by zoo keepers . It does nurse from surrogate , but believe it is more of a comfort thing. Like human babies with pacifiers.

Larry-has Kayembe's birth mother shown any more interest in him? I know the one video showed her approach him, but Fredrika was having none of it and snatched him up.
No more interest than any of the other females. Have no idea if that will ever change. I'll keep updating with more videos and anything I learn. watch for more videos.
How is she feeding the baby, she doesn't seem to have any milk
She was producing milk (spontaneously started to lactate at 47 years old). She doesn’t look like she had a lot. Staff was also supplementing with bottle feeding. At first it was 12 (small) bottles a day, then went down …8, then 4 until supplements were not needed.

Definitely something wrong with this if the baby was born October 2021 and it's posted February 2021! You should correct the text in this video. Silly mistake but it makes it seem fake.
Was there a typo in the video? Yes. My mistake. I chose not to take video down - correcting that would cause other issues I did not/do not plan on working with. And.....Since I would be creating more videos, I figured that the first one was my learning experience. As for the rest of the timeline....Kayembe was born, 10/26/21. He was not on exhibit right away. He was born 5 weeks before the expected due date of Dec. 1. Then, after about a month, he got pneumonia and there was limited visibility to ensure he got the best care. After he recovered, I didn't start creating the videos until the second week of February (the first had the typo). Hopefully, that provides a better timeline for you. Thanks for watching. W tym filmie, pierwszym, który pokazuje Kayembe, pokazuję go tylko z jego zastępczą mamą - Fredriką. Myślę, że jego biologiczna mama nie wiedziała/nie chciała się nim opiekować. Czasami matki zwierząt tak robią - na szczęście istnieją inne samice, które opiekują się niemowlętami. Przeglądałem moje stare filmy o Kayembe i dodawałem tłumaczenia. Jestem w Kayembe #13. Mam nadzieję, że będziesz mógł cieszyć się z nich częściej.
