    Hi Jen, You should use potting mix. Garden soil gets compacted . If you label your containers with a china marker the sun doesn't fade it.

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes I definitely did this year. Only potting soil. Although it wasn’t a total failure I think potting soil definitely yields better results. 😊

      🤣 Yep JUGS.
      This is the first I’ve grown Merlot lettuce and it’s beautiful. I put it in a place I hope it won’t go to seed too quickly.

      I sure did. I have a bunch of vlogs and garden tours that I did last summer and the ones in this video grew beautifully especially the creme de cassis. I’ve just started new jugs this year with new varieties of hollyhocks I’ve acquired. I’m excited for those.

    Good video. You know i have done winter sowing several years mixed results. I agree dirt. I had extra seed starting soil used that, and watering and fertilizer was nightmare. One hot day, then the next cold took out most of my 2023 attempt. For sure will try again in 24 but selective with herbs, cut flowers, and perennials only.

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you. I always expect a few dud jugs so I’m not disappointed. But it’s just such an easy way to have some stuff started with minimal effort I enjoy giving it a go. I hope this year does wonderfully for you. 😁

    Happy for your successes. I am winter sowing for first time this winter. It was great seeing what works for you, asI have planted a lot of the same things. Did it seem like your jugs were awfully dry? Do you water during the winter?

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před 6 měsíci

      Thank you so much. And I don’t usually have to water that much during the winter. Once spring rolls around and the days get warmer is when I water the jugs a bit more. I just keep an eye on them and as long as there’s condensation on the inside of the jugs, they seem to be ok to me.

    My marigolds didn’t do well that in the winter jugs. But cosmos did great. I did borage It’s the first time for growing that so not for sure. My tomatoes did well. Peppers were hot and miss. My anise hyssop and lemon balm did amazing. So much fun. Happy growing.

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před rokem

      It seems like certain things can be hit or miss for me. I’ve found snapdragons and hollyhocks do well which is great because I love them. Guess I’ll try tomatoes and peppers again next year. It’s just so much fun when you open them and see all the fun things. 😊

    I tried winter sowing this year and i tried doubling up with seeds inside. and i ended up frying my seedling from inside because it was winter and then +30 for no reason for 3 days while i was trying to harden off. and I at least have the winter sowing back up! I had a yarrow started and i completely killed them. but! I have a jug with some plants so ill still have some!

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před rokem +1

      It’s definitely a method that can be hit or miss at least that’s been my experience so far. I really enjoy it though. I think when they do well they make very strong plants. The stuff that didn’t do well I’ll try again next year. The weather was definitely bipolar where I live to. In the same week it was in the 20s at night and over 80 one day. And that was March. Some seedlings just didn’t stand a chance. Happy growing to you. 😊

      Once you get yarrow established you will always have yarrow. My neighbors planted it years ago in a wildflower bed along our mutual property line. Now it makes up 50% of my lawn in the backyard. It out competes the grass for space.

    I think this video gave me anxiety because I am overwhelmed with tomato and other plants here and looking at all you have to plant is far worse

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před rokem +2

      I’m just taking one day at a time and planting as much as I can wherever I can. I’m over halfway through the jugs already and today I’m planting around 200 tomatoes and peppers. I did at one point though look at it all and think I was a bit crazy. Then I thought Nah this is so much fun. 😊

  • @LindaLolaa

    it looked like there were still some baby strawflower plants in the container! strange that they didn't germinate well, I had the most success this year with winter sowing strawflowers

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před rokem

      Yes I did pull the tiny amount that did germinate out and plant them. I resowed more seeds and still not great germination so I think it might have been my seeds. I’ll try again next year. 😁

    Is Olive an Australorp? She sounds just like mine. Her name is Pepper. Most of my Winter sown seeds failed this year. It was suddenly 80s and high winds. Two days of that did them in. 😢

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před rokem

      That’s so funny. Another one of mine is named Pepper too. I think she is but I’m not certain. She came from a clutch of fertilized eggs from a nearby farm when one of my original girls went broody. She sure looks like it and she is the loudest of them all. She loves to have conversations with everyone. 🤣Her eggs are the color of an Australorp as well. So my guess is yes she is.

  • @eastcoast4233
    @eastcoast4233 Před 4 měsíci

    I’m sorry but I disagree - seeds will at least sprout in garden soil. There is no temperate plant which requires specialist soil at spouting stage, even acid loving plants will sprout in standard garden soil. If nothing at all came up I’d be asking about the seed viability and whether the containers went bone dry.

    • @eastcoast4233
      @eastcoast4233 Před 4 měsíci

      Please note later in the video so many of the plants that did sprout looked under watered too.

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před 4 měsíci +1

      You’re right. There could’ve been a number of reasons why they didn’t germinate. And watering is definitely not one of my strong suits. I’ll admit that. 😁

    Hello, what a stupid video for people who want to learn about winter sowing. She put her seeds in “garden soil” which her soil can be 75% different from anyone’s else’s. She doesn’t use potting soil which is the “game changer” for the entire world. Half her seeds died, I wonder why?

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před 7 měsíci +4

      Hello. This wasn’t really a teaching video. Just a reveal of how things looked inside the jugs. I have one where I show how I start my winter Sowing. I like to experiment sometimes and then show the wins and the failures. So now I know a better way to do things and so will people who watch. I hope you have a beautiful day. 😊

  • @alejandroalcala3146
    @alejandroalcala3146 Před 7 měsíci

    cool, what did you learn

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  Před 7 měsíci +2

      I learned I need to keep the brassica’s separate from the spring jugs so I open them sooner. And to not use any or as much garden soil to start in. Hope this helps.
