Those lures are AWESOME! Whats even better, the lack of over explaining, the absence of annoying noise that some people call “music”, the choice to play natural waves made this video worth watching to the end!! Well done!!
I want to start making my own lures and struggle with the tools but your channel is giving me confidence because you don't use big tools you use ones that are at low cost and that helps me alot to get started so thankyou
Thank you Corey i appriciate that, lately doing things in a more primitive way gives me more pleasure and enjoyment because its more challenging to limit yourself in that way.
Awesome 40 + minutes of lure making and fishing goodness, and a history lesson to boot! Yes, the zander's walleye cousin is excellent table fair too. Black over yellow over white is my favorite color for them. Thanks for sharing your artistry!
Fantastic Patern's using feathers !!! Those colours really pop, after the last clear coat !! Given me some interesting ideas !! Enjoying your content !!!
As an educator, I plan on using this in the classroom. In Texas, fourth graders are taught how structures and functions enable organisms to survive in their environment. In the case of this bait, SolarBaits uses the structure (form) of an actual prey fish in the construction of the lure that acts (function) like that fish when pulled through the water. It's quiet interesting to me how the evolutionary data contained in the shape of a fish can be adopted by humans to catch their predators. Fascinating to consider, and a great summer find for a teacher getting ready for the next school year. Great job SolarBaits, and thank you.
One thing for all out there making their own lures will agree to..... the sensation of catching fish successfully is beyond words.... greeting to all lure makers....
If you want to use pine tar, you need to process it into pine pitch with some charcoal. It was used on boats and arrows as a waterproof binder so it should work for lures. I'm surrounded by pines and have made some fireproof camp matches with the stuff, it is very sturdy stuff.
I did excatly that in my test and precessed it the way you discribed it. Its an old trick that works for certain stuff but like i mentined in the video i did not think its strong enough lol i guess im paranoid that way
Beautiful work. I love the colors you chose. Something to possibly consider for a deep dive into the genre would be to use natural silver pheasant or undyed mallard or teal... these are all silver/white based. Mid coat the whole bait, then use that as a base for airbrushing..? Your work is fabulous.
For future reference, if you mix charcoal with pine resin it will make an extremely strong adhesive. Native Americans used it as a way to secure arrowheads, so it should be more than enough for fishing lures.
You got such beautiful baits and take so much time to make them (which was an absolute pleasure to watch!), yet you use a leader full of kinks, which takes seconds to replace. :D
For spreading glue in small areas I use toothpicks. Wooden toothpicks. They are very cheap and come in very handy for several things. Keep up the excellent craftsmanship. I have learned alot from you.
Awesome job on the baits. Heard your from Finland, one places I want to visit. My grandmother was born there. Her parents came to America when she was young.

Great idea about the pine bark and feathers , Mikko , .......also enjoyed the bit of information about Finnish lure history . Years ago I had also made a few lures sporting those Finnish saddle lips , I had pre-cut the slot also with a saw , but then widenened and deepened the straight slots with a 1,5mm Dremel router bit exactly according to the inner outline and curvature of the lip , this way the lips came to sit quite snug even without beeing finally glued in . Best greetings , Dieter
hey cool to see you still around dieter, any chance we could see more videos from you? But yes having a pre cut slot would have been a good idea but i guess its just the way i've always done these and its hard for an old dog to shake old habbits if you know what i mean.
@@SolarfallBaits Hey , Mikko , .....sorry , but I do not think , that I would put up any more videos . I had quit on making lures for quite a while now , because I've lost my enthusiasm somehow . Me and my wife went through some hard times during past years having to take care of some seniors in my family that sufferd from dementia , had to live in nursing homes and by now both passed away , .....these were my aunt and my father , both reached their high 80s . These headaches obviously left deep scars on our mental well-being , also because we barely received assistance from other family members . Also the present political and social situation in Germany and in Europe has taken away my carefreeness of former years , somehow disallowing me to carry on business as usual and focus my personal attention on different things today , ...I simply can't sleep anymore , while my bed(my fatherland) is burning , so to speak . Thanks for asking , anyway , since I have not entirely lost my interest in fishing and luremaking , though , I'm still spending my leisure time at the water's edge . Best greetings , Dieter

Nice job, bro! Totally handmade just like mine!! I’ll try it in the next project. I’m from Brasil and I use an Amazonian wood called molongó. It’s white, soft and light and so good to make the surface lures I use to catch Tucunaré (Peacok bass)

I have seen really good paint jobs but this hair technique is absolutely beautiful and amazing, now you need a trolling motor sir, 6hrs of rowing wow , that's Popeyes stuff😂, Great Video and amazing lures, job well done 👏👏👏
I always thought of Pine as unusable wood for lures because of the tar. The bark however may not have the tar of the inner wood. I think I will try it if I ever get back to making lures.
Really nice lures as always! Would love seeing you do a bigger size wobbler/crankbait for pike. Cos I think this is the first lure with a lip you have done a video build on?
Nice technique of making lures. If you want to speed up the process of application of feathers, use coarse painters brush. For glue and for flattening of feather. Just pour glue in to jar lid or similar vessel.
No its a zander. Zander and walleye are sort of like sibling fish as they look pretty similar but still different enough to be classed as seperate species.
Not sure if you tried adding black ashes to your pine resin? It makes it stronger. Although I have never tried using it on lures. Just in making Native American arrows. Love your work. A big fan of you and Finland.

i think the hooks i used were little bit too big for this sized bait, the action might improve with slightly smaller sized hooks. sometimes you just have to work with what you got
Materials used in this video:
-pine bark
-1mm stainless steel wire
-Cab coatings lure varnish
-various feathers (strung quinea feathers silver, silver phesant, grizzly sadle feathers)
-saddle lips
-nail art glue

I always thought of Pine as unusable wood for lures because of the tar. The bark however may not have the tar of the inner wood. I think I will try it if I ever get back to making lures.
yep there is not sap on the bark part so it suits lure making pretty well. the hard part is to find a tree that has thick enough pieces
