This game got an additional port called 'Battle Rangers,' on the NES i believe, which gave us the absolute classic line "You! Invader! Get you the hot bullets of shotgun to die!"
The Hot Bullets of Shotgun is my new band.
There is no NES port. Battle Rangers is the name of Bloody Wolf if Europe and other PAL territories in the arcade, and does have that wonderful line, though.
Go go battle rangers...
the arcade version from data east is a upgraded pc engine board made custom for it.
This hardware is actually an upgraded PC Engine / Turbografx 16. The additions are a new pallet chip (the PC engine "graphics chip" is actually two separate chips one for tiles and sprites and one for the color pallet and ramDAC) a YM2203 FM music chip, a MSM5205 speech chip, double the amount of VRAM and a second HuC6280 CPU.
It's two bad they didn't also add an additional tilemap/sprite chip, this was how the Supergrafx worked, they designed a new pallet/ramDAC chip with a second pixel buss input for a second tile/sprite generator chip which doubled the background layers and sprites.@@bananonymouslastname5693
My favorite example of Creative English, and it is the arcade version which has the line
"If I were an enemy and I saw this, I'd just leave the guy alone. He's got enough problems." 🤣🤣
Lol 😂No doubt! That ‘cycle’s acting like a wild bronco that he’s trying to tame!
"Muscle emphasis tablets" nudge nudge wink wink.
I love when video games are unintentionally humorous.
It's not juice, it's a protein shake. 😂
@@doublep1980
I'm not a bodybuilder or do heavy lifting so if i see muscle emphasis tablets on a retro game i would think it's an euphemism for steroids to dodge censorship.
@@TerryHintz300ATK yeah the most memorable to me is Duke Nukem 3D, which features Steroids as a consumable item but the N64 port calls them "Vitamin X".
In Super Mario RPG if you check Peach's bed, you'll find her 'toy'. Then prompted to put it back.
🥹🥺Anabolic steroids sound very seductive but very scary… maybe they’re different and better now, but I remember “Nope!”-ing out of ever trying them for muscle-building because of a teen novel I was given in the 90’s. It was called “Anything to Win” and it wasn’t really propoganda-y or pushy with its anti-(anabolic) steroids, but yeah, it gave me some good food for thought. It stars a high-school football guy who I think is starting to get attention from pro scouts and so he feels pressure, both inside himself and from some others to enhance his chances to “win” and succeed. He ends up trying some for a while, but he doesn’t like the side effects he sees in himself and some others ‘roiding up: uncontrolled anger was one, he himself started to experience sexual arousal problems and then the very “showpiece for ‘roiding” older guy who looked great and got him into it ends up starting to die from liver problems and he looks like it, too. Like real bad. So, yeah! 🙂There’s my non-‘roid-rage ‘roid rant! 😂
It's not slow-down, it's proto bullet time.
Lol 😂 Totally! Hey, slow-motion controller enhancement was absolutely a thing, too for games. It was just that we the player could control when it was on or off. This… yeah. 😂
@@1Holbytla There were games with an intentional slow-motion effect? During this era? I've never heard of that
1:11 Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?!
🙂👍Yes! We are! … but no president with "Hey dudes, thanks for rescuing me. Let's go for a burger...Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!", though, I guess. 🥺😂
Ahh, Bloody Wolf. The best game about a soldier strung out on steroids and heroin killing everything that moves.
"The pain is gone." Yup, heroin to go along with the "muscle emphasis tablets."
😲😂Holy Schlamoley! Steroids I got but I didn’t think of heroin or morphine!!
The arcade sequel to this, Desert Assault, is even more fun. It's up to 4 player co-op, tons of weapons and vehicles, and Snake and Eagle from Bloody Wolf are even back and playable. It's a great time, and way better with friends.
Is desert assault the one where some regions released versions had it as snow and some as sand?
@@billyj.causeyvideoguy7361 yep!
Thanks. I make a note of decent multiplayer games in case I ever have friends again :O
Oh man I’m not sure which animation I love more -
The way most enemies point at the sky when shot like a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Quarterback after a touchdown pass.
Or the way the main character transforms into a crawling newborn with a bulky diaper when climbing up a tree.
Marvelous find SNESDrunk!
🙂Your reference to the Christian athletes made me LOL! It does look like an intimate “connecting with/crediting God” moment made public. I had in mind the old-timey quote: “Lord, into your hands I commend my spirit!” as these dudes are bleeding out. 😂 Oh, my! … and your newborn with a bulky diaper climbing a tree made me laugh, too!
The story, cutscenes, and fonts are definitely classic Data East. You can tell from a mile away.
I remember playing this when it came out for Turbografx. The SNES was a year away and I hadn't played or seen in person a Sega Genesis yet, so this game blew me away. One of the few TG16 games I had access to that I played the Hell out of back then. In fact it's one of the games for the system I have CIB including the cardboard box for it. Never beat it though. And, no, you're not crazy. The soundtrack is easily the best thing about the game.
What's interesting is (at least for consoles) this is one of only three run and gun games Data East made. The first was Heavy Barrel on NES, this was the second, and the third and easily the best is Midnight Resistance for Sega Genesis. It's interesting to see their style with those games evolve. Heavy Barrel is cool as Hell but a bit bare bones. This is a step up with slightly better graphics with an ever cooler feel, and much better music. Then Midnight Resistance. Good Lord that game is amazing with one of THE best 16 bit soundtracks period. Seriously, you think the music in this game kicks ass? Look up "Flood of Power". You can thank me later.
That motorcycle looks amazing.
😁👍 Tight turning! It could literally turn on a dime, I think! It looks so strange, though. I think if I saw that IRL, I’d laugh myself pissy first shortly before the rider ran me down in anger!
It's so much fun to use in the game.
Dear SNESdrunk,
Thank you for keeping these old games alive with your videos. There are so many gems back in the day that should never be slept on. My son will not play new games until he has graduated with the classics on snes
CODE NAME: Drunk fits how the character moves...and the music is bad ass!
Drunk, ‘roided, and painkillered!! A deadly cocktail… for EVIL! 😂
Honestly one of my favorite retro games, it's short, punchy, and the frequent checkpoints make the hard parts quite bearable.
I love this game, it's pure stupid 80s action movie esque
"Turbo drunk" sounds like my kind of booze.
From zero to drunk in 20 dollars
This guy overuses words like "wonky" just in this video alone he says it multiple times like seriously who in their right mind talks like this?
Sounds more like someone who drinks too fast or has low tolerance
Just finished playing the new Contra's 10 minute demo for 3hrs on hard 1cc. (Dont sleep on it its amazing!)
Then I just saw a Bloody Wolf upload from SNESdrunk. Even if this is top-down, damn i love the run and gun genre!
The music reminds me a little of the NES game, Bayou Billy.
A classic. I played it at my neighbor's house growing up. Would have liked two controller ports though to play two player simultaneously as an option
Yeah, the TG16 *was* odd in that respect, wasn’t it?
@@1Holbytla 😆Yeah it was. Hudson Soft definitely didn't seem interested in selling more controllers. I would think Japan would be even more annoyed with it than we are/were so I really have no idea what they were thinking
@@davec.3129They wanted to squeeze people dry by making them buy an expensive multi-tap and multiple controllers. The game with the most amount of players was Battle Royale with up to five-player simultaneous play! Not that it was any good though...
Isn't a shotgun a spreadgun?
This was one of my favorite TG-16 games growing up. It was so much fun to play being OP after you unlocked it by beating the game. You could literally fly through the levels with the best weapons. I don't think it has aged well, but at the time, there wasn't much competition for it on any of the platforms other than the Contra games.
That boss with the boomerangs looks like it was inspired by the Colonel from Fist of the North Star.
Drunk, I love your MN sports references. Just awesome.
Total length of video: 360 secs.
Total length of "Turbo Drunk": 3 secs.
.8333% of the video was spent listening to "Turbo Drunk".
Lovely maths! 😁👍
Hell yes! Some Friday SNES drunk! You been quieter here lately. I hope you're doing okay. I love these goofy Rambo inspired games. Ones where they said "Guns, jungle bullets, got all that. Bad guys, let's dump an absolute SHITLOAD of them in there. Hmm, boss fights, that'd be good. Story? Oh, uh, yeah, we can probably have one of those. You need to rescue the (hostages- president- scientist) from an evil dictator, who may be a parody of a real life dictator."
Fire up Street Fighter 2 and tell me this system could not hold up sir.
🙄
Good review! I've always heard this a pretty fun game, but never actually played it myself. It looks pretty solid! I always enjoy a good run 'n gun even if it has BS moments.
One of my favorite Pc Engine games.
lol @ 2:04 Morrissey taking strays
You killed me with "Spread-man" !!
0:41 holy crap didn't even think that was a fence
Never imagined SNES drunk to mention Morrisey 😅
😂👍Frankly I just don’t get more than half of SNESDrunk’s references but I enjoy him super-much anyway, and I enjoy others enjoying the references so I laugh along, too.
"The Pain is Gone" Man I wish it was lmao
My cousin had a TG-16 and Bloody Wolf and I loved the game, until I got to the beginning of Level 3. I couldn’t make that jump over the chasm. Didn’t understand why. Fast forward 15 years later, I bought a TG-16 and Bloody Wolf and I finally figured out why I couldn’t make the jump back then: I had auto-fire maxed out on the jump button, so my jumps were too short. 😂
That's devastating! Sometimes I made mistakes with chicks and missed out on getting to the next level. Gotta laugh at our younger selves though.
I don't think it's aged well, but at the time this was the game that made me fall in love with the TurboGrafx; this and Blazing Lazers. NEC did a promo tour the summer it came out, and they had a huge (at least it seemed that way to my kid brain) pavilion at the local equivalent of a state fair. I mostly ignored the rides & exhibitions, I was absolutely glued to the TG-16 games all afternoon, and Bloody Wolf was the one I spent the most time with. Even though I knew it had some jank to it, I was accustomed to playing past plenty of that on my NES, and the hidden rooms and multiple weapons and vehicle made it seem more interesting than most of the other action games they had on offer (Ninja Spirit was there though).
Love your channel and I like all of the representation of it. Please watch your health, this place needs people like you to hang around and eventually do things on an even bigger scale! 😢
Nice! Have always enjoyed this one and still play it fairly regularly. Would love to see more Turbografx reviews on the channel.
😂 Mark Wilf. That’s a drive by deep cut reference few will get.
TurboGrafx games are the forgotten step-children of the 16-Bit era; appreciated any peaks at them
"Code Name DRUNK" is so friggin awesome
You're not thinking of getting rid of the jank?
But Moe, the jank! The jank!
"Two dudes in camo, running around - shoot'n stuff"
Say no more!
Love me some Bloody Wolf - Mr. Buzzsaw 🦎
Are you a lizard?
Wonky ass motorcycle 😂
Muscle emphasis tablet 🤣
Awesome video.
Didn't know that the PC Engine has their own take of Contra. Definitely has that gameplay feel to it.
Man, I wonder what it's like to get turbo drunk 😵💫😵💫😵💫
I love that this video is the first Drunk video that I've noticed where the joke lines include pictures of the reference, and yet it's the first one that I didn't need it for. I know Morrissey, but any other name Drunk drops I just assume is some hockey player.
(Or Ken Griffey, Jr.)
I'm pretty sure this is the game where one of my favorite bits of Engrish/zany VG quotes came from: "Invaders! Get you the hot shotgun bullets and die!" or something like that.
The president your looking for is in another castle… bunker I mean bunker
Props for Data East claiming "Shotgun Man" before any Mega Man games did.
Metal Gear does have Shotgun Kid
4:30 - Wait, what?
Slow down is just the original bullet time
That music clip sounds like the score for Beverly Hills Cop
I would love this game if I have played in my childhood, I can easily imagine me thinking "OMG You can ride the bike"
Grew up on the TG16 and I’m very excited for Turbodrunk. Bloody wolf was one of my favorites as a kid
I always enjoyed this game. It had some nice parallax scrolling in cut scenes if I remember correctly. I used to know where a number of secrets were as well. Friends used to be really impressed with this and Splatterhouse.
yay more SNES Drunk!
Turbodrunk.
This one does have some incredible chiptunes. PCE chiptunes in general are arguably underappreciated.

impressive
I used to play this with my best friend. I loved the TG16.
5:57 "If I were an enemy and I saw this I'd just leave the guy alone, he's got enough problems" SO FUNNY
Code Name 'Drunk' sounds like a badass name for a sub-channel.
I always love me an unexpected Vikings reference
4:26 If Castlevania and TMNT OSTs had a baby.
Wow, I've heard of this game before, but I see where you coming with that Capcom vibe. Also that boomerang guy phasing all around reminded me of that Boss in Cadillacs and Dinosaurs 😅 thanks for the video SDrunk ✌🏼
I LOVE PC Engine... so many great gems. Was the sleeper system sandwiched between 8-bit and 16-bit era.
My favorite part of SNES Drunk videos is when he references someone that I've never heard of before. Like, who is Mark Wilf?! IM CRYING
Not just drunk, but "Turbo Drunk"! Now, that is drunk, lol
There was a game on Turbo CD called Last Alert that reminded me of this game. Loved them both
So many retro games, so little time. The more TurboDrunk videos that go out the more I realize I need to play some. I barely even pay attention to new games cause there's so many great ones already out.
I had fun with this game as a kid. There is a fun flying mode cheat code that really makes it fun.
I remember trying the arcade version 'anyway I can' and I found the scrolling to be very choppy but it doesn't look bad here and you said it might be better than the arcade version so maybe I will have to give this TG16 version a try 'anyway I can'.
TG-16 definitely feels like an intermediary between NES/SNES. 8 bit processor still with 16-bit graphics chip. Calling it a 16-bit system often reminds me of SNK marketing NEO-GEO as 24-bit, so I usually refer to the TG-16 as a 12-bit system and just listen to nerds squeal about how that is COMPLETELY WRONG afterwards, lol
Props for the Moz reference 😆👏🏼
2:02 That's not Morrissey! That's Michael J. Nelson from Mystery Science Theater 3000 & RiffTrax doing Morrissey cosplay!
lol probably your funniest review. Spread man, Morrissey...
LOVE THE TURBO!!!
This is actually a fun one. A lot of late 80's Arcade games looked like this.
TurboGrafx had some really great music. It also came from games you'd never expect. Jackie Chans Action Kung-Fu is up there... and who doesn't hear the main board music of Devil's Crush and want to learn how to play electric guitar?
Yeah. It was like the NES (or C64) chip tunes taken to the max. I guess that Genesis is technically the last of the chip tune console but it's FM synth sounded very different from the classic 8-bit stuff. SNES had MIDI/sample based audio, so not technically chip tunes.
Sounds like exactly what I'd expect from a game called 'bloody wolf' with that cover.
Turbo Grafx is a bit like the Dreamcast. Somewhere in the middle between two generations.
That soundtrack is fire.
Turbo Drunk sounds like a power metal album.
I loved this game back in the day
Now do Red Alert/ Last Alert ! Even more unintentional humor and a much better game overall. Those cutscenes ! I mean, you can't say anything else than it's himariously bad, with an honest love for the Rambo movies that makes all of the charm.
Shotgun Man has just become my alltime favorite vg character
I love this game.Smoke some herbals and press play lol
I always get this game confused with the awesome Last Alert.
I'll give you all a bit of knowledge you probably wouldn't see anywhere else besides reading this comment section.... unless you've been paying attention to the world the last 4+ years (or more).
At 2:04 into the video, the picture of the singer "Morrissey" used to mimic what the enemy sprites are doing -- That is Freemason symbolism 101 right there. His right hand is doing what's called "hidden hand" and his raised left hand is pointing towards the sky which typically refers to "lightning", "light bearer", "light bringer"...aka Lucifer. Also, you'll see that same exact pose by representations of "Baal" or "Moloch". This is very common in the entertainment industry with plenty of 3rd eye and "one eye" symbolism with all of this being ESPECIALLY prevalent in video games especially from the 1990s when kids were really the only ones playing said games...hmmm, I wonder what that's all about?? The RPGs of the 90s and early 2000s probably have the most out of all genres but it's literally in all them to the point where it's impossible that it could be a coincidence and the game creators "didn't know". Even if one only looked at games in the Shin Megami & Persona -- those two franchises ALONE are enough to make anyone with a working brain ask the question of what they're trying to convey.
That all being said -- I still enjoy ALL of these games I'm referring to -- I'm just far more aware of this stuff and the meanings behind them than your average person who thinks the politicians they vote for or their favorite "actor" in Hollywood could possibly be an occultist or into any sort of secret society --- even though it's literally all right in their faces.
Thanks SNES drunk
Glad there's more Turbodrunk! It's got a hell of an overlooked library that isn't Bonk. It's still a delightful little fact that the system was suppose to compete with the FC/NES and the MD/Genesis and not the SFC/Super Nintendo.
That soundtrack is fire
Underrated. One of the best games for the TG16 so far
The more TurboDrunk the better!
yay Turbo drunk! thats rare! I liked the Stage 7 soundtrack for this game
Hulk Hogan's favourite TG16 game for sure.
Commander: "Rescue the president!"
Soldier: "Erm, wich president exactly sir?"
Commander: "Uh, what do I know? Whoever... I'm not your mom."
I hear "Spread Man" and I think about a mascot for some random peanut butter brand. XD
I actually beat Lagoon. I didn't think it was horrible, but it did make me wish I was playing A Link to the Past instead.
There are some top shelf games on this system, I wouldn't say this is one of them.
