There once was a Rock critic who said that playing the drums and singing lead on a song ' live ' was like flying 2 jets at the same time ! Levon Helm was such a master musician craftsman ,that he made the task as easy and simple as smiling ...a true genius of his art .Max Weinberg was giving it ...wow , look at this guy dance his stuff ? Magical ...
Old age and feebleness has crept up on me these days but I still remember the good talks with Lavon and sure wish I could do it again. I was born just a few miles from where he was and my parents knew his, it was a very small community ! Many of my relatives still live in the area, some above ground and many that reside in the Cemetery close by. Even though we were as poor as church mice our parents tried to raise us right and I believe his done a great job ! 👌
I believe every word of this because you got his REAL spelling of his name correct! Even though his actual name was Mark Lavon Helm, but no one ever called him Mark.. Amazing story! So are you from Chicken Scratch, AK too?
The goofy grin on Max Weinberg's face (an incredibly accomplished drummer in his own right) while watching Levon tells you all you need to know. When the pros themselves are star-struck, you're a legend..
This is Lavon you're seeing. Always respectful. Never changed from his roots. Never spoke to anyone he didn't say, "Yes sir" & "No sir"; and "Yes mam" & "No mam" to. Born and raised a Khristian; went Home one. That says something for the man, having lived and worked through the nutty Hippie years when America's children rushed off to foreign lands to find God. Salut! Bravo!
Levon had the greatest whistle the one he used to call his dogs, Mavis and later Muddy is like I never heard before and the only other person I ever heard do it is his daughter Amy..! God Bless ya Levon, it was a joy to know you...
Every time I see Levon playing with another drummer, that other drummer never takes his eyes of Levon... to be fiar, I don't either :D dude is awesome!
Excellent footage from Early days of Conan's show. Max and Levon together your talkin about two of the best pure rock drummers of all time. The interview was great too. Rock History lesson for all.
This is one of those magic moments where everything just cooked. You can just feel it and see it in the enthusiasm in the band. Levon had an effect like that with other players.
Wonderful interview! Wish it had gone on forever. Levon sure was a humble man, and very in the present. Great answers to those questions. Maybe he will receive his proper due, in post mortem. One of the other members of The Band sure took his....
There will never be another like Levon. We are particularly proud of his Arkansas roots. RIP Levon. There's gonna big some great music to listen to up there & I know they're proud to have you join them.
The "other drum player" is Max Weinberg, longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen, and leader of the Max Weinberg 7, house band on Late Night. A big fan of Levon's and an incredible talent. He belongs there.
Hope all the guys that played with him (Jimmy! - you hear me?) and those that wanted to get together and put on the biggest tribute concert ever to celebrate this one of a kind music icon.
we danced be-bop and slippin' n sliding and jitterbug dance steps to this at neighborhood backyard teen dances on packed dirt or Wells Park dances in Albuquerque.
What a great guy. He was robbed blind by Robbie Robertson who claimed the lions share of the songwriting credits when in fact they were joint compositions the end result being that poor old Levon died broke after ruinous medical bills.
Rolling Stone ranked Levon Helm as 91st on their list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. And here Levon tells Conan that he doesn't really consider himself to be a vocalist. That's really too bad if Levon didn't know what a fantastic singer he was. Oh well. I'm sure he knew that he was a great drummer.
The skins for The Band and The E Street Band just chilling next to each other and a much younger Jimmy V than I'm accustomed to if my eyes don't decieve me.
Levon's "band" is tearing it up! Love the guitarist too! Levon looked healthy. It was all good. Too bad the late nite guys moved from music and humor, to disgusting politics. Gimme the good ole days.
Conan had Levon on several times, he's one of Max Weinberg's idols, and Jimmy V still goes up to do Midnight Rambles when he can. I think you're incorrect. I think everyone had respect for him there. Maybe Conan didn't do his homework for the interview, but just speaking from seeing footage of the Band on Late Night a few years after this and Levon coming on in 2009 just before Conan moved to LA, I think Conan had a great deal of respect for him and liked having him on.
Larry Williams (May 10, 1935 January 7, 1980[1]) was an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll singer, songwriter and pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana. Williams is best known for writing and recording some rock and roll classics from 1957 to 1959 for Specialty Records, including "Bony Moronie", "Short Fat Fannie", "Bad Boy", "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" and "She Said Yeah," which were later covered by British Invasion
I could listen to him sing and talk all night. I'm glad these videos exist.

Quite simply, one of the most talented, humble, thoughtful, and respectful celebrities of the last few decades. R.I.P. Levon
He made it look easy, what a treasure we all have lost. RIP Levon.
Old age and feebleness has crept up on me these days but I still remember the good talks with Lavon and sure wish I could do it again.

Had the pleasure of meeting Levon. Even when he was on the top of the world he was the salt of the Earth.🎶😇🎶
One of the most soulful singers in the universe. Now he belongs to the universe.
This is a clinic on how rock and roll is supposed to be performed.
The goofy grin on Max Weinberg's face (an incredibly accomplished drummer in his own right) while watching Levon tells you all you need to know. When the pros themselves are star-struck, you're a legend..
Levon has a unique voice and I love it when he sings and play the drums at the same time. There’s freshness and it’s great. Surely miss him.

Priceless. Levon is wonderful
I can listen to Levon talk or play all night.
Levon you have left this world a better place. What great tunes.
Well said
He plays the funk out of the beat within the groove.
He was truly a happy soul.
Levon had the greatest whistle the one he used to call his dogs, Mavis and later Muddy is like I never heard before and the only other person I ever heard do it is his daughter Amy..! God Bless ya Levon, it was a joy to know you...
R.I.P. Levon, your music will live on forever...say hi to Ray, Otis, James and Stevie Ray for us...
One of a kind voice! Love it>>>>
Man alive could he sing rock and roll
Rest in peace. Great voice lost to throat cancer.
Every time I see Levon playing with another drummer, that other drummer never takes his eyes of Levon... to be fiar, I don't either :D dude is awesome!
Jesus H. Christ! Yet another gem from Levon. You know that God is swinging to this song right now.
“I’m not a vocalist.” “I’m just helping out.” I mean come on! There’s humble and then there’s this madness!
The Greatest You will be missed, RIP Levon Helm
Ahhhh, Levon was all rock and roll...still rocking to it 11/2019!
love it, Levon left us great memories RIP LEVON

The one and only Levon Helm ❤
Wonderful interview! Wish it had gone on forever. Levon sure was a humble man, and very in the present. Great answers to those questions. Maybe he will receive his proper due, in post mortem. One of the other members of The Band sure took his....
Tough to see the Great one's go...RIP

So much groove on his simplicity.

That guy makes everyone around him look good. He is a treat.

These lyrics are my favorite
what a sweet soul. RIP
Great clip! Thanks!!
Great post, Thanks for the Memories
Anybody else go back to those days of Levon and Ronnie Hawkins at the Le Coc Dor Youge st Toronto in the 50s-60s?
The "other drum player" is Max Weinberg, longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen, and leader of the Max Weinberg 7, house band on Late Night. A big fan of Levon's and an incredible talent. He belongs there.
Max also drummed for meatloaf for a while.
MUCH LOVE, Levon. RIP in peace.
Levon was great and he does a great job on this Larry Williams classic. Max Weinberg helping out on the drums!
Hope all the guys that played with him (Jimmy! - you hear me?) and those that wanted to get together and put on the biggest tribute concert ever to celebrate this one of a kind music icon.
From 1957, a real favorite.
he was just so great...RIP

Great cover of a *original from Larry Williams* (1957 Specialty)
we danced be-bop and slippin' n sliding and jitterbug dance steps to this at neighborhood backyard teen dances on packed dirt or Wells Park dances in Albuquerque.
best rock singer ever. without levon The Band would have been just another good band.
I was at this filming! Conan's first season.
I love how Levon subtly looks over towards Max when he mentions Elvis coming back with D.J. Fontana on drums :)
GREAT
its hard to get those old songs right without sounding cheesy
I wish I could've met Levon....and Richard.....and Rick............fuck.......
Great track featuring many 50's songs.
Larry Williams wrote this..along with You Make Me Dizzy Miss Lizzy.
What a great guy.
He was robbed blind by Robbie Robertson who claimed the lions share of the songwriting credits when in fact they were joint compositions the end result being that poor old Levon died broke after ruinous medical bills.

Saw The Band sometime in the the late 90s. They were smokin'!!!

YAAAY
The skins for The Band and The E Street Band just chilling next to each other and a much younger Jimmy V than I'm accustomed to if my eyes don't decieve me.

Levon was being Levon, Humble, he never forgot where he came from. Watch the movie, "The Last Waltz," if you haven't seen it.
Conan had Levon on several times, he's one of Max Weinberg's idols, and Jimmy V still goes up to do Midnight Rambles when he can. I think you're incorrect. I think everyone had respect for him there.

You have not seen music until you've been to a Midnight Ramble at Levon Helm's house
🤔Not a singer? That's B.S.! You were the voice that made The Band.🎶😇🎶
more joy...
True genius.
you bet your ass on that one
