It was during a moment of reflection that Winters met the Barnes family as they mourned the loss of their son to the War. The chance meeting grew in to a close friendship and change Major Winters forever...so much so that he stated in his memoirs that it was "the most formative and developmental time in his career".
Join us as we talk about Major Richard "Dick" Winters and his time in Aldbourne, England during WWII.

That was a gem of a story, providing the context that is so easily lost. If there are any of the Barnes family still on the area I’m sure they would be touched by the flag. Greatest Generation
I am not sure. I should have asked in the store. The Barnes had a daughter that was around the same age of Winter’s sister and he enjoyed spending time with her like his sister. He wrote her letters after they left Aldbourne too.
"Greatest Generation" Thank you, I will not forget
Absolutely. 😊
@Bizz Mars Yeah, that razed cities to the ground with conventional and nuclear weapons. Your simplistic views are scary.
@@DannyBoy777777 Grow up hippie. It was just being thankful for Easy company and Dick Winters being part of the "Greatest Generation" and showing Walk with History I enjoyed the video.
Greatest Generation! From what I can tell Maj. Dick Winters was a truly noble soul - he possessed a deep humanity that clearly comes out in all the interviews I have seen to date. The love he had for his men was rivalled only by his outstanding leadership ability. A natural leader, an insightful tactician, an impeccable soldier, a great American. Thank you for your contribution to his memory here 🔥🕊🇺🇸
Thank you! He was certainly amazing.
Greatest generation...........yes but as long as young men and women choose to volunteer to put themselves in harm's way to protect others, we will always have people of that same character. Thank you for this from an Australian veteran and descendant of veterans of both world wars. Thank you for your service also 🇺🇲🇦🇺
Thank you and thank you for your service. 😊
Greatest Generation. I have visited Major Winters grave several times. He is my hero.
Amazing man indeed. Thanks for watching!
Greatest generation, sadly very few of them left. From a British veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. Recently watched the 80th anniversary commemoration of D Day and the testimony of those veterans that are still with us. God bless them all. We did a tour of the Normandy beaches a few years ago and also visited some of the many cemeteries there. Very emotional experience.
Just got to go to the 80th anniversary of D Day at Normandy...so emotional. We have some more great videos coming...thank you for watching!
I live very close to Aldbourne and often drive through, can't help but keep thinking of easy company. Respect to all who have served.
Well said
"greatest generation" Thank you. Thank you for honoring this man and those who helped him. Thank you for representing America in such a noble way. Thank you for bringing us along to see these sites so that they can be more real to us. These heroes are dying away quickly and what they accomplished is being forgotten because our schools are not teaching our young people the history they need to know. It behooves us to shoulder the mantel and carry the message of the sacrifices that were made for our freedom and the freedom of those in other countries and to make the younger generation hear and understand the vital importance of keeping history alive.
Thank you so much for that!! It is so important to never forget these heroes and tell their stories. One of the reasons we started the channel and we couldn’t have done it without all your support. We are grateful.
"Greatest Generation" I had an uncle who was a B-17 Flight Engineer/Gunner in the 8th Air Force in England. My Dad and more of his brothers also served overseas in WWII. Thank you Jenn for all your videos.
Thank you for watching and for your family’s service. We have a video out bout one of the Masters of the Air B17 pilots buried in Arlington and a longer video on them coming out this Wednesday! 😊
I'm from Brazil, I will never be forgotten
Greatest Generation
Band of Brothers is my favorite WW2 movie or series ever. Watched it ,at least, 13 times. Super glad you did this one
Such a great mini series
Incredible video and words that mean so much to me. My father and uncles served in WWII, and my uncle Donald was a forward observer, shot down and buried in one of the famous cemeteries after the war. R.I.P all Veterans that fought for freedom
Thank you so much for the kind words. And thank you for your families’ service.
"Greatest Generation"......................I go to the 5 Beach landing areas every year to honour the people who landed there to spearhead the drive into Europe; never fails to put me in awe of what these brave people did during those landings and forward to take Europe. The stories from local family members around Normandy are just incredible to listen to. Thank you for taking the time doing this video, its more than appreciated.
That is super cool. Thank you for sharing. I want to go to Normandy. Maybe we can meet up and you can tell me your experience learning about the area.
I’m from and based in the UK. If you ever get to plan a trip to Normandy please make contact; I will give you the name of some fantastic reliable guides and also of details of places you must visit and restaurant etc. Omaha beach with the story of the American medics from the 101st in Angoville au Plain is unbelievable.
@@ianforsyth2090 Absolutely! I know we will get out there one day...hopefully sooner rather than later. 😊
If you're going to Aldbourne, come up to Hambledon, which doubled for Aldbourne in the series. It's a 2hr drive.
Thank you for this video! Amazing how the English, Americans and other Allies came together to protect freedom. Truly the Greatest Generation!
This was a great one to make. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for your service to our country and the diligent way you present history!!
Thank you for watching, it was my honor to serve my country. I was very honored to make this video. I appreciate your support.
Greatest Generation indeed.
I had 3 uncles in WW II. All went to the European theater and fought for us all.
May future generations never forget about what happened in that war.
Thank you so much for your family’s service to our country. 😊
@@WalkwithHistory thank you for doing all of these videos. 😊
I don't know enough about our military history. Thank you so much for providing such a valuable tool and perspective to help me..(and many more) learn
Thank you for watching. This is an important part of the Band of Brothers story before D-Day.
I live in Bath UK, not far from Aldbourne. I need to go back armed with this video to check out the locations. Brilliant video. Many thanks
That’s so great! Thank you for the comment and you made our day letting us know this video encouraged you to get over there again. 😊
Greatest generation! Thank you, fantastic video and history lesson
Thank you for watching. They are the Greatest Generation.
They were the greatest generation.i served in the military in the 70’s and 80’s.in the 3rd ROYAL TANK REGIMENT.i think that the series was the best ww2 series ever made.and Thankyou to that generation for what they did.
Thank you for your service!
The Band of Brothers is an amazing story. Can Do!
Agree! 😁
Greatest Generation! I come from a family rich in military tradition in every branch, and I've been going down the rabbit hole of WWII, and of late delving into the life and philosophy of Dick Winters, who has quickly become my personal hero, and someone to aspire to be like. Thank you for taking this journey and for representing grateful Americans to the Barnes family and all of the allies that fought along with us to defeat tyranny and restore freedom to Europe. God Bless...
Thank you for watching. It was completely my pleasure to go there and capture it for you. Truly an incredible place and I was proud to be there.
This is a wonderful video. As a veteran of the 101st, we we required to study our history during WWII. Being able to experience this through your content was very entertaining and brought back wonderful memories of the brotherhood that I experienced decades later as I served in such a historic Division.
I am so overwhelmed with gratitude that you found this video. I appreciate all you do and have done with service to America. It was an honor for me to film this video. Thank you for watching.
“Greatest Generation” outstanding video Jenn. Here’s a salute to you and Scott for what you do, thank you. Dick Winters grew up in my home town and his final resting place is about 15 min from me. Favorite Band of Brothers moment, that’s a tough one. But I’d say leadership has to do with everything, so my moment would be when all the NCO’s went in front of COL Sink to say they pretty much had no faith in CPT Sobel as a combat leader.
How neat that you share a home town with him! And yes…the leadership displayed in this series was amazing.
Well produced and beautiful thought out video of a soldier of the greatest generation. Thank you!
Thank you for watching. They are the greatest generation.
My father was a part of that. He started out as a ground pounder. In the motorpool at RAF(USAAFE) Thorpes Abbot. Because of combat attrition, he was assigned to a B-17G as a radio / upper gunner position. Eventually becoming a navigator/ bombideer. Heck of a way to be promoted.
Absolutely awesome. I can’t imagine the world we would be living in if these heroes and all the heroes that made the sacrifice and some the ultimate sacrifice to fight true evil.
Agree. An amazing generation for sure. 😊
" Greatest Generation " Fantastic video Jenn. Great to learn more about Major Dick Winters & the Band of Brothers.
Thank you for watching.
Thank you for doing what you do and bring history to us. My grandfather was a paratrooper on D-day in the 82nd airborne.
We need to know the memories and stories of the GREATEST GENERATION alive.
And thank you for your service Jen.
Wow! Thank you for your family’s service! I was so honored to be able to make this video to remember what they did. 😊
Greatest Generation, what an incredible video. Thank you for sharing the story.
Thank you for watching. It was an honor to be there.
Just watched your video, very moving loved it , I live in Newbury uk, where easy co used to go drinking as it was about 10/15 miles from Aldbourne with lots of pubs....
On another note good reply about the copyright issue, if he is a Brit then I am ashamed and embarrassed of his attitude ! Keep up the excellent work, especially the easy co stuff, as locals we have a strong connection with the 101st airborne many planes flew from RAF Greenham common on our doorstep infact that is where Dwight D Eisenhower met paras before they flew to Normandy. the famous picture of them all together on the 5th June.👍
Thank you!!! We love hearing from folks in other parts of the world and how they are connected to the events we try and share. Truly...thank you for the kind comment. 😊
You have to love that those buildings are still there! Super impressive peek into an uncovered topic as it relates to the 101st!
Absolutely that is why I wanted to tell it. Aldbourne sometimes gets overlooked in the Band of Brothers story but it was so vital to Winters and I wanted to honor that.
Excellent video, thanks to you and your husband for producing it.
Thank you and thank you for watching. 😊
Greatest generation. Excellent video.
Thank you for watching! 😊
Simply Beautiful stories
😊🙏🏻
As A former 101 Airborne Member I salute these men...
Thank you for watching. It was amazing to be there.
Glad to have found you. Well done and such a beautiful place that I must visit someday. Just did a reverse BOB self-guided tour in September. Kaprun to Berchtesgaden with a stop at Kaufering IV/VII then on to the Bois Jaques and Foy. Did Carentan and Brecourt in 2019. Appreciate your passion for our beloved Greatest Generation.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the Walk with History community.
Very nice
I live 10 mins from Aldbourne in a Village called Eastbury
My house is a C1630 thatched house and they are quite warm as the thatch is about 2ft thick and they thatched the houses as tiles were very expensive prior to the industrial revolution but straw was not and literally growing in the fields .
When they restored the golden Cockerel weather vane on the church it had a couple of bullet holes in it from easy company I expect
Keep up the good work
Regards Richard
Thank you so much for the comment Richard. I could not walk by those thatched roofs and not say something, they were so cool!! That is neat about the weather vane. I am sure Easy Company got into some mischief being stationary for 8+ months.
I was three years old when the war started and seven when it ended but it has been the most important part of history for me my whole life. I watch everything and read everything to this day I can about World War Two. Thank you for starting your channel and for your service.
Thank you so much. It was an honor to make this video to remember those who served before us. I hope I can continue to make more. Thank you for watching! 😊
Hey Jenn, Thanks for doing your research and providing us a fact based story! Good job!
Oh almost forgot, the greatest generation!
Thank you. And thanks for watching! 😊
Great video, I didn't know anything about the family that dick winters stayed with, amazing story.
We’re happy you liked it! Great story to tell. 😊
What is your favorite Band of Brothers moment?
thank you
Thank you for watching.
Truth be said I never seen the movie however, very inspired to research about the subject. As always appreciated you Jenn. Cheers y'all.
Great series if you ever get a chance to watch it. Cheers! 😁
Greatest generation. From a Marine veteran.
Agreed. 😊 Thank you for watching
thanks for doing this video
Thank you for watching. We have the Band of Brothers at Arlington National Cemetery coming out this Wednesday
I spent a few hour with Major Winters in Hershey, Pa. in the club house of Hershey Golf Club.
He held court with several Semi-Pro golfer and their wives. and not a dry eye was found when he talked about liberating Jews in a concentration camp. (can't remember which).
WOW! What an honor and a treat.
Great job.
Thank you! 😊
I live in a town called Swindon, about 8 miles from Aldbourne I've been to the village many times. there were a of lot of US army camps at that time
That is so cool!!! I wish I could have had more time to explore the area. Thank you for watching.
I am a amateur historian ww2 being of special interest. I love band of bros. Vol at airborne museum. I adore you. Your Chanel and your passion. Keep up the great work. My own favorite scene from the series was the hart wrenching scene in the laundry. After they retuned to England. Greatest Generation ps. For my own walk after I saw Band of bros. Drove over to Camp Mackall.
Thank you so much for the kind words. That was quite the scene too…so glad you got to visit one of their locations! We have a lot more to visit as well. 😊
The Canadian, American and British service personnel were surely "the greatest generation"!
Absolutely!!! The bravery of what they did to overcome. I am in awe of all of them.

3:16 Camp Tortuga??
LOL I said it wrong. “To Ca”. Tocca. Too much Dr Mudd research.
I see that they had a plan of upottery aifield on the wall.
Yes, they had many artifacts from their time there. It is definitely worth the visit.
Camp what? Camp Toccoa
That was the camp in America. This is the camp in England. Thank you for watching
