I would disagree for older microwaves. Ones from the late 70s - mid 80s can take a lot of damage and still fight strong. Look at MicrowaveMeShow, in which Captain Microwave used the same 1984 Kenmore microwave for 84 episodes.

No, it actually fries the magnetron because all the microwaves are not being converted into heat within food. They just bounce everywhere, and a result, the magnetron is fried with it.
