Gregg was later interviewed about this night. He said it was a turning point in his life. He rewatched it a few days later and was horrified to see how he spoke and looked. Said he was drinking apprx a qt of vodka daily. At this moment he decided to get off
alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes. He hired a male nurse to live in his home with him while he detoxed. He had been to 16 rehabs, failing at all of them. Seeing himself barely able to stand up was his magic moment. He never again drank, took any drug and stopped smoking - all cold turkey. He said it was the hardest thing he had ever done. Such a brilliant singer/songwriter. He left a huge void in the lives of all who loved his music.
David died in 72 on motorcycle and Gregory never recovered.

Listening to Gregg speak on how embarrassed he was at the induction is hard to hear but it made him realize he needed more than he was getting from all the rehabs he had already tried & when he saw this playback it pushed him to seek his own help at home to finally kick all his worst habits & for us it was just as much a blessing as it was for him. I can only praise him for getting through that long night & in his drunken state, Duane would naturally be the one he would mention. We miss him & Duane , Berry , Butch & all the great players that went through that awesome band .
Touching? He was very drunk and was an addict. He even discussed this moment with Dan Rather in an interview and said he was embarrassed because he could barely stand he was so drunk.

Greg might have been a little sauced but he delivered a great tribute to his big brother. "Was always the first to face the fire" And wow, there is no mistaking Berry Oakley's son!
He was very drunk here. He discussed this moment in a Dan Rather interview and said he was barely able to stand up.
That moment right there is what made him get sober

Man, I'm So Glad Gregg was able to escape addiction. You See Him Here, You Know, The Fun Is Over. He went on to have 20 more Quality Years and was a Class Act. Thank You GOD Indeed.

That was Gregg's "come to Jesus" moment. He saw it sobering up, was mortified, ashamed, and embarrassed by what he saw. no reason to EVER wish one brother died over the other. Duane wouldn't feel that way.
Exactly. Some of you people who are dissing Gregg should read his autobiography. He was damn near death at this moment and a total wreck. He changed his life after this.
CO Randy I just read the sad news that Gregg Allman died today. What a sad loss! He was an incredible singer and musician.
Duane dying hit Gregg hard no wonder he struggled with addiction glad he got sober and atleast he is with his brother now resting he had alot of health issues in his last years
If Greg would have never watched that tape and was never ashamed and embarrassed, we would have lost him MUCH sooner as well. His liver would quit on him, because of the abuse of alcohol and drugs for decades. I applaud him now, even in death to "face his demons" as he finally did. He was able to give all of US much more music because of his sobriety! Greg was a kind, humble and grateful soul who is continually missed! RIP

All that tragedy and dope couldn't tear them apart, one of the best bands ever.
I spent my 21 birthday in a small auditorium...maybe 150 people, being knocked out by the best southern rock band of all time! It was before people had caught on to how freakin talented they were. There wasn't even anyone at the door to collect our tickets! We just walked in, and down the aisle to the front row and sat in these wooden seats center stage, which were maybe 5 feet from a small stage that actually had a curtain, and were blown away for 2 hours by a Gregg, Duane, Berry, Dickie and Butch giving it their all as if they were playing for thousands! They played for 2 hours, took a break , sat down on the floor at the back of the stage and enjoyed some "refreshments" along with the rest of us, then got up and played for another hour! So up close and personal....the following year, they WERE playing to thousands! Much respect....hard earned and well deserved!!
There are a lot of influential musicians and bands in the HOF, but none more deserving than the Allman Brothers. I loved them as a teen when they were just hitting, and even more so now when compared to other bands over the decades. Truly one of a kind.
Greg and Ronnie Van Zant was what made the 70s great Sad they are gone but what great music those two guys left us with that never gets old

Gregg never got over losing Duane but all Greggs problems are over now and that's something to be thankful for. Something else to be thankful for ; The Rambling Man is still with us.

I was reading Gregg's memoir recently and he wrote that this way the turning point in his life and he was embarrassed rewatching the footage, seeing himself shit-faced. He said he promised himself he wouldn't get drunk before the ceremony but people were buying him drinks left and right and he couldn't resist. Allegedly Jaimoe was crying in his hotel room that night because he thought Gregg was going to die. The next day when he was going to rehab Gregg filled his pockets with those small bottles of Jacks and vodka and downed them knowing he would never drink again. Gregg has been sober for about twenty years now. Good for him. Long live the Allman Brothers.
cedrictrent92 Greetings from the great state of Texas I am still reading Gregg's book it is an interesting and intense read I am also ready Duwane Daughter Galaderele book ...try to keep in mind these people are simply that people with fears and faults like the rest if us and we should not idolize people ...they were like many glorified druggie marijuana user and drunkards I was a kid in the 1970s so I don't remember to much about them until the 1980s... Lynyerd Skynerd seemed more popular when I was a child from what I remember God bless you and yours

I was a teenager in the 70's and in my group of friends they were right there with Skynyrd and ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker Band, Willie & Waylon. Just badass music and good times. Now as the years pass,music heroes and family members pass away one by one....And the world keeps on turning. Hold on to your memories and love those that you're close to. God bless you

Gregg didn't actually go to rehab ..he hired a private make nurse to stay with him at his house, while he kicked EVERYTHING... booze, Heroin, coke, even cigarettes!! And that last time stuck, thank God! His voice sounded better those last few years than it did back in the late 70s!

@@klmullins65 I do beg to differ with you about one thing -- I heard Gregg back in the 70s and THAT voice was unreal. During his later years, particularly after his liver operation, he didn't have quite the volume or range that he had earlier. Still, his was the most soulful, heart-gripping voice I ever heard. Thankfully, I was privileged to hear him perform many times over the years and I miss the Brothers greatly.
That night changed Gregg's life forever! It was after this night that he got sober forever!
Indeed it did. I had a somewhat similar experience myself where the pain of something was so great I completely quit drinking. It was without a shadow of a doubt one of the greatest decisions I have ever made; probably the best. My life blossomed and continues to do so. I have so much respect for for those who are trying and those who have succeeded. Never give up trying no matter how long it takes you to crack open that cast iron gate, because a colourful garden of the most beautiful flowers awaits.

I have loved this band and especially Gregg as since I was able to appreciate music!! Heard Ramblin Man and it was LOVE!! They were and are an Extremely talented group of Men!! His son Micheal Sean lives in the same town as I do, plays locally and is very talented in his music with that AWESOME DEEP RASPY VOICE I JUST LOVE!! And brings back many great memories of Gregg and his musical talent. My favorite concert ever was seeing him at Ruth Eckerd Hall! RIP Gregg!! Thanks for all the great music and memories!!

Wow, very moving...thanks for posting.
A very dignified induction for perhaps the greatest of American bands. A beautiful introduction from Willie and some moving words and memories from the band and family. Duane is still so sorely missed by us all, and for all the great musicians lost too soon and too young, it is perhaps Duane's passing that still touches us the most. In response to another poster, out of all the marvellous and epic music they created, it will always be Blue Sky that most evokes the memories and nostalgia for me.
I hadn't seen this, so thank you. The ABB was my first concert, but saw them many times after. No one like them and they really influenced many genres of music and musicians. Superb talent. And for perspective, Duane was only 24 yrs old when he died and had made a huge reputation already for the artist he was. No slackers in that band, they were ALL incredible.
They never should have kicked Dicky out of the band. The live shows never had the visual electricity once he was forced out. Big mistake Butch. 1989-2000 were powerful years for the band and they proved to be one of the greatest American bands of all time.
2000 was not very powerful. The late 90s era really wasn't either, but the music was still good.
@@Cpayne30 say what!? I guess a month of shows every year at the Beacon in March in NYC, and two or three sold out shows in the Boston area and all across the country EVERY SINGLE SUMMER proves you wrong.
@@PatriotSteve 2000 with Dickey was just not powerful; it was extremely poor by the band's standards. Dickey was playing great up through 95-96, but after that he was very inconsistent.
Blue Sky is their best song, one of the greatest of alltime in fact.
RIP Gregg Allman. Deepest Condolences to the family & friends. He was a great talent. The 70's wouldn't had been the same without him and the band. It was a damn shame that Duane died so young and then Berry Oakley was also killed in a motorcycle accident very close to the location of Duane's wreck the following year in 1972. RIP Gregg. These guys were hardcore rockers and I loved them!!!! I only wish I could go back to the late 60's thru the 70/s and hear some real rock n roll...you don't hear it these days -- the bands that followed based their music on the bands of this era..you can hear it...and where are the real rock bands today...there aren't any like this!!!!!!!

You`re right.Although he was drunk, he did`nt sound to bad, he got all the words out, and from what I`ve read he wanted to say alot more. But what he did say was short and sweet and touching. To me, his short speech seemed to have worked well. Thanks.

God I wish Duane would've been alive for this. The music world lost major part of Rock music the day that Duane died. His loss is immeasurable.
I still shed tears for Duane to this day, over 51 years after he was tragically taken from us.

They were such a good band, that I remember even when they appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, they were one of the few bands that Doc Severinsen and his orchestra would jam with! Doc loved playing his trumpet with those guys--that was an honor for him!

Lamar Williams, who played bass after the death of Berry Oakley, wasn't mentioned either, nor were the Toler brothers. But at that moment on stage I guess it is difficult to try to remember and mention everyone.
Chuck Leavell along with Jaimoe and Lamar Williams were in the band Sea Level back the 70's after the Allman Brother first split up....Chuck later on played with the Rolling Stones after Ian Stewart died.
Dickey was a cool dude, with a dry sense of humor,he held it together for this speach
Gregg's 1973 solo album "laid back" is very good but unheralded.
It is a superb album and did receive quite a bit of critical acclaim and commercial success.
I was just in Macon. Visited the Big House and Duane and Berry's graves at Rose Hill Cemetery. Spoke with someone down there who knew Gregg somewhat and seemed in the loop. This was just after the bogus hospice reports. Apparently Gregg is not doing well. He's home but the whispers are not encouraging. The one person I spoke with had tears in their eye. Let's pray for Gregg. May he come to know his Savior while there is still time.

I’m still in AWE of this band - here, after listening to them starting in 1988 , when I was in high school. They’ve never not been one of my faves - and I always come back and listen again, more intently, and I hear new things I missed before. They have such a rich legacy and will forever be a part of the American music experience . So proud of who they were/are and what they did.
Watch the video from 1972 @ Hofstra University NY. Only Betts on guitar and Berry on bass. Dickey singing Rambin Man and playing his leads wishing he had Duane on stage with him. Berry watching Dickey with the same lonely look in his eyes. 9 days later Berry died in Macon Georgia only 3 blocks from where Duane died after hitting a truck. How does a band come back from that loss. Gregg continued on for his brother and band mates and he knew the music would eventually save him too.

Warren sang very well. He was as good as Gregg. That is saying a lot, because Gregg Allman had one of the best voices in music generally.

Barry Oakley Jr. was actually raised by Chuck Negron, one of the singers in Three Dog Night (the one with the great mustache). Negron married Julia Densmore who was married to the Doors Drummer who she divorced then briefly dated Oakley before he died. Whew.

Greg said he could barely stand up. He seen this tape a couple days later & said he cried like a baby. Alcohol is such a horrible drug. It does horrible things to people.. He said coming off of it was just diabolical. I'm sure missing Greg Allman. One of my favorites. I hope he is at peace & with his baybra...( That's what Duane would say. Its a southern thing )

Just finished reading, "My Cross to Bear" by Gregg and he says he hit his bottom at that time, the alcohol was killing him. He was pretty wasted when he got to the awards ceremony.
Can't get enough of the Almond Brothers although I've always been a Mounds man myself. Sometimes you're feeling your nuts, but best you don't.

Berry Oakley was peerless in the world of bass players, as peerless as the others were in their field of fame. I have found a lot of praise for for all the others ABB members, but not a lot about Berry's innovative style and the benchmark he set for future bass players.
Amen to that. Listen to the live version of "Blue Sky" at SUNY recorded the month before Duane died. Berry is monster on that track, soloing underneath the guitars but still keeping the rhythm going.
If you want the real truth, ask a drunk. Gregg was right and truthful, Duane was always there and damn well FIRST to face the fire. You would go through him if there was any trouble. RIP.
