Jhonty used to save atleast 15-20 runs in every match by his magnificent fielding and was a handy batsman scoring some runs in the middle at times he has played some super innings his batting style was also good.
It's not just about diving. It's about making sure that ball leaves his hand as soon as it touches. Only then the runs could be saved or run outs could be gained. Jonty is and will remain the best sprinter with quickest reflexes for a long long time.
He was good in all positions but why would you want him in other positions when he saves so many runs @ backward point.? Watch the vid on about 5m or so, he isn't @ point.
#Atharv Do your statement has any ground? Most of his career he fielded at point because SA was known for fast bowlers not spinners.. he used field at covers & mid on as well while spinners were on.. Jonty is the all time best fielder without any time.. not only because of his fielding but also because he set this trend.
I’m lucky to have watched this guy field like this live in many matches starting in the late 90’s till the early 2000’s until he hung up his boots..an absolute joy to watch..if you observe in this video..it proves his mettle and capability..this guy was so bloody fast in his pickup and more importantly his return that in 90% of the cases..the wicketkeeper would not make it till the stumps to collect..and the ball would either hit the stumps or whizz past them with the wicketkeeper not even in the frame 🙌🏼
I’m South African and I grew up during the Jonty years. These clips is just him pretty much every match. Like the commentator said, he is a joy to watch. The only fault I could ever find in him, is that he didn’t hit the stumps as often as I though he should’ve. But I’m only nit picking, and doesn’t take away from the brilliance that was Jonty Rhodes. Every kid in SA wanted to field like him. As elsewhere I suppose, but Jonty isn’t just a cricket player, he’s a National Icon! And a well deserved one. Top human being too. South Africa’s very own Micheal J Fox! Everyone loves him I’m glad I got to watch him live a number of times. Watching the stingy and deadly quartet of McMillan, Matthews, DeVilliers and Donald, the flashes in the pan that were Adrian Kuiper and Dave Callaghan, watching Rhodes always have a +15 next to his name (back when they used to track that ridiculous runs saved stat)..to watching my favorite player of all time Shaun Pollock. Cronje before all This team has given me so many memories. As a Non South African, I have no qualms in saying that South Africa was my favorite cricket team. I made more of an effort to watch their matches than my home country's
