    Hi everyone! I'm Darren, and I'm a third year medical student studying at Monash University. Especially for parents or students in younger year levels, words like 'ATAR' and 'SACs' can seem a bit confusing. Hopefully this video clarifies those questions.

    You will need more than a high ATAR score. Social skills are incredibly important. We do not need just high-scoring robots.

      Don’t brainwash kids into thinking atar is not important, social skills are easily learnt, a low atar will set you back for life

    Hey Darren, I know its been a while since you did your UCAT. But do you vaguely remember how hard each subtest was?
    Was it easier than expected?
    Thanks

    • @DarrenTan21
      @DarrenTan21  Před rokem +1

      Hey Josh, I remember VR being slightly hard, DM being normal, QR being really easy, AR was difficult (but I was also bad at AR) and situational judgement was exactly how I expected it to be like after all the mocks I had completed. I think the UCAT has 'sets' of exams, so some of the other people in my year had a similar experience with a very easy QR and others had a different set.

    Awesome video Daren. We recently moved to Australia and this gave a good overview of what is ATAR and how is it calculated. My son is in year 8...can you help answer these questions:
    1. If a student goes to a non-selective school, but does good in studies...will his ATAR be still lower than students at Selective school?
    2. In the example that you showed it had only Maths/English/Latin...what about other subjects such as Physics/Chemistry/Biology?

    • @DarrenTan21
      @DarrenTan21  Před rokem

      I’m not sure about every subject, but the study designs for say Methods have dotpoints under each area of study for each unit. One dotpoint is ‘the role of parameters in specifying general forms of functions and equations’. I think it’s a little broad but it gives a rough guide to which chapters in the textbook you would check out.
      I used the study design more to check my learning at the end rather than to learn from - I think the schools and textbook are pretty good to follow with initially

    Hey Darren I’m currently in yr 11 and I can speak for all students that are in yr 11. We are half way until yr 12 like that’s crazy!!!. Wot can we all yr 11s do to get ahead b4 we actually start yr 12

    • @DarrenTan21
      @DarrenTan21  Před rokem

      That's a very broad question. No. 1 task is to get your Yr 11 studies under control and try hit those results and build those habits that you want. That will prepare you well for next year.

      @lz.70stracks56 Před 5 měsíci +3

      Yes and can put down the quality of teachers who are excellent and work for the state system.
      I met some atrocious teachers who worked at Private schools during my time so be careful how your parents spend their money. The teachers had resources, however, did not have the skills to use them effectively and they were lazy. ( personal experience - They did not offer extra tutorials after school or alter the communication of tasks, provide a suitable guide to assessment criteria guide, and then offer examples of what a high-ranking response was to achieve a high score for the assessment. That is the difference. Flexible teaching to mixed ability classrooms. Especially where English may not be the first language. Providing timely feedback to students is also important. It is hard for VCE teachers to complete all these tasks within a day /week/year.
      Get a highly recommended experienced tutor as a support person in year 11 Maths/Science/English if required especially in Year 12.
      I can answer that as a 30-year-plus veteran ex-teacher and parent of exclusively teaching VCE in Vic. Select the subjects that you need extra tuition for and get a good tutor for personal one-on-one teaching. Best wishes. @@DarrenTan21

    Could you explain the point of doing a 6th subject? Does it take 10% from the 5th + 10% from the 6th or is it 10% from both 5th and 6th combined?
