The first in a series of classical guitar lessons for beginners. In this video, you will learn about holding the guitar, correct hand placement, string names, playing techniques and basic music notation. It culminates in playing along with an ensemble piece.
The Abanico guitar company was formed by a guitar teacher, frustrated at the lack of choice when his pupils came to upgrade their guitars from their basic models. There has always been a lack of instrument choice at the difficult £200 to £300 price point but these quality instruments represent extremely good value for that kind of money. Available with either solid spruce or cedar fronts, they have laminate rosewood back and sides and are fitted with Der Jung machine heads. They come complete with a semi rigid foam case. You can try them in Worthing, Sussex or, have them couriered to your door, with a money back guarantee if not completely satisfied. If you are a pupil looking to upgrade your current classical guitar or a teacher wanting a good quality workhorse, then please check out www.abanico-guitars.co.uk Available for sale.
Review of Abanico Guitars (Lin Flanagan for BMG Magazine)
Ok, let's start with the bit that will make many readers laugh. Abanico Guitars are handmade in China. Now, let's look at all of the reasons why you should take these instruments seriously.
These guitars are very nicely finished from the woodwork through to the hardware. The woods are those that are traditionally used in classical guitar construction, and there are two models available, giving a choice of either a cedar or spruce top. The action is favourably low without unduly limiting the volume, and the neck is nicely shaped and feels very comfortable indeed. They are currently supplied with a set of respectable D'Addario strings*. In short, they feel good to play. (*Depending on the individual guitar, it will be fitted with either 'Concertiste' standard guage or 'D'Addario' high tension strings)
The quality of the sound that is produced by both of the two models on offer is quite exquisite. The cedar top version gives a warm rounded sound that to my mind best suits classical music, while the spruce top version emanates an equally pleasant but brighter sound that is more conducive to Latin styles. However, these are entirely subjective conclusions. There is a distinct difference in tone between the two models, but it is not easy to decide on a preference.
At the price that these guitars are offered they are an absolute steal. But the fact that they come with a hard case makes the price outrageous. If you're looking to step up from the traditional sub-£150 beginners guitar range, you'll be hard-pushed to get a better guitar for £225 (price correct at time of review, now £245) than an Abanico. Most European-built guitars of this quality are only available for around twice the price.
The prejudices of a lack of authenticity were eventually overcome by Japanese luthiers of electric and steel-string acoustic guitars, some of whom eventually matched and even surpassed their American counterparts. So, I have no doubt that there will now be those who will raise their eyebrows at the thought of a Chinese-built 'Spanish' guitar. But if you're looking for a 'next level' instrument, then for price, quality of build and sound, I strongly advise that you consider trying an Abanico. - Jak na to + styl
Mr Hicks, it is regrettable that the rest of the lessons did not get published. This one short lesson showed that you are an excellent teacher. I think these videos/lessons would have made a considerable impact on students everywhere...

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, due to several false starts and financial loss on my part, the remaining lessons were filmed but not published (I lost heart!) I am currently having a 'wrinklies gap year' traveling but on my return, will attempt to put more lessons on line. Thanks again. Steve.
Looking forward to more lessons 😊
Hey Steve, if you're interested I might have some ideas about how to make your videos more financially lucrative if you're interested. It depends on what you're already doing to ensure no financial loss. I know it's been 2 years since this comment but if that appeals to you I'd be happy to discuss further. Just reply to this.
You are a great teacher, please keep going with the lessons whenever you are ready.
That lesson was awesome! Wish I had seen it when I started out!
Steve Higgs not that bad
the way you teach is awesome please keep us updated with new lessons
Mr. Higgs, I've just discovered your lessons. I hope life has been good to you and that you will be able to resume these lessons. I'm 70 years old and cannot afford an instructor. My guitar sat quietly in the corner until I found you on line today (March 2017). Namaste.
Randy Merrill ...the patience of instruments x)
Like others here I was hoping there would be more lessons from Steve Higgs. As an alternative, I have found the Udemy online lessons from Hani Gamal to be pretty good, and very reasonably priced.
@@FairyFrequency ikr? Mine's been sitting in the case for months? idk how long. Then once in a while you get the ambition to take it out, and lo and behold it needs tuning lol. Too bad (this is just a little lame humour haha) - it couldn't see fit to squeak (or whatever sound), prompting its owner to say what's that sound?
I just wanted to add to the loads of old comments that as someone who wants to learn classical guitar, but who has no experience, this is precisely the type of lesson I've been looking for. You seem like an excellent teacher and I would love to see more. If you offered paid lessons, I would jump at the opportunity.
Judging by the age of the comments, I'm guessing that likely won't happen, but just wanted to thank you for what you have provided.
My teacher taught me:
Every Bunny Gets Drunk After Easter

Is it a good idea to use thumb picks? I am used to playing with thumb picks and I am very comfortable whereas I see classical guitar needs to played by the thumb nail.
Can anyone tell me what music piece is going on at 8:10?
can someone please find a cache of videos in this series that are unpublished. there is NO-ONE ELSE ON CZcams THAT HAS THE TALENT TO TEACH CLASSICAL GUITAR.
savas cebeci
Thanks for this. I am just coming to classical guitar from years of playing on a steel string (badly!) Classical guitar requires a different discipline, and I need discipline!
Larry Shone what song was he playing from the intro??
Every Bad Guitarist Deserves An Execution. Only this keeps me going and practicing regularly.
hola puede dar clases en español?
Hi
Correct me if I am wrong but it seems classical guitarists use way different chords and inversions than other guitar styles such as rock, folk , country
Where is lesson two lol:(
I'm trying to learn over here and his voice giving me asmr vibs
Lol I play the banjo and the thumb is played sort of bent so that the pick is parallel to the string. Im trying to trying to learn the classical guitar, but my thumb wont bend straight😆
Song
i thought you where going to say PIMP
I guess this might not work for me. I'm left handed but play a righty backwards and upside down. Oh well, anyway hope things work out for you.. Patreon is something youtubers do now so people can help fund your work.. Cheers

why are the mnemonics so morbid??
Didn't even have to listen past the first three seconds of the intro: Adelita - Francisco Tárrega.
I learned it top to bottom, Eat A Dead Goat Before Easter. I’ve never known anyone who learns it bottom to top, regardless of the string numbers.

And your website?
sir.. I'm 17 years old, is it too late for studying classical guitar?
wayyyyyy tooo old to start now. :)
MrTHL1 there is not such thing as too late you troll.
Austin Hernández you must not know what sarcasm is.
Never to late, when u 27 you will have 10 year experience :) I'm 26 and start with guitar (i play keyboard/synthesizer some years so maybe is little easier for me) :) Good luck
What's the name of the song you were playing?
Good video however next time go a little slow
I agree he is a great teacher, even going by this clip alone. But I think the key is that he needs to eat and he probably was not making enough from CZcams and poor punters like myself.

I was sad to learn that Abanico guitars are no longer trading. British import duty, excise duty and VAT are slowly killing small importers! Did you know that the cost of shipping a guitar or any other product from China is added to the value of the product! A guitar bought for £100.00 in China will accrue approx 43% £43.00 in tax!!!
Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears - I like that one:)!
I need the lessons In Tamil language!
“Every bad guitarist deserves an execution” that’s not very nice everyone here is a bad guitarist haha
Every Asshole Does Good By Ear
Every Body Gets Down And Eats
Every Bad Guitarist Deserve An Execution
Very nice, but very basic lol
It is excellent, leaves me and seemingly others wanting to continue learning. THAT is hard to achieve.I personally have been pissed off over and over by supposed beginner guitar books and lessons because the content SUX. At least this man had brains to know how to teach.🙌🏼
IT SUCKSSSSSSSSSS
Not great for fat people...
