Ah, the beauty of what music can provide.. you brought me back over 35 years ago.. this was, courtesy of an excellent teacher who has since passed, the first song I ever dove deeply into as a fingerpicker. A beautiful song, as you well know, and have presented here for us. I will now revisit 'Dust In the Wind' and re-learn it. I say - Thank You - Marco!

As with many here, this was one of the first songs I learned. 25 years later and this fingerpicking pattern creeps into most songs I write and play. It's an infectious groove that leads to playing with all 5 fingers of both hands, eventually. Dust In the Wind is so beautiful it draws me in every time. Great lesson, Marco.

I remember the first time I heard this on the radio. I thought nothing beyond classical could be so beautiful with uplifting emotion…but this…it felt so moving within me.
That was nearly fifty years ago. Now that I hear it I still feel what my Eleven year old self felt…only times one thousand. That much intensity can only bring tears. And so it does. Every time I hear it.

For the intro just remember the number 103. That’s the fret sequence on the B string. It repeats over and over through the chord changes. So, for the opening C chord (B string) you fret 1, then 0 (open), then 3, then 1. For Asus2 you pick up where you left off and fret 0, 3, 1, 0. When you go back to C fret 3, 1, 0,3. And, so on. I’ve heard some folks always going back to the 1 on the chord changes but that’s not how Kansas plays it. Hope that all makes sense!

'Dust in the Wind' was the song that inspired me to pick up a guitar, and the first song I learned. It's just 4 basic open chords, C, A minor, G and D minor. I first learned the chord shapes and then to play a simple arpeggio with my thumb. I actually worked out the finger picking while driving one day (no guitar to be found), and to my amazement it worked when I got back home and gave it a try! It's still a great warm-up exercise.

Love this tutorial. The thumb patterns are a bit simple for ‘traditional Travis’ style, but all great guitarists have used repeating patterns to emphasize the bass line as the song requires. Listen to Chet Atkins or Doyle Dykes for other examples.

Actually you are correct. Years ago I had a copy of Acoustic Guitar magazine which is now long gone. The issue had an extensive article on Dust In The Wind which explained the 11 layers of guitar in the song including Nashville tuning and other methods like using only the treble strings of a 12 string, doubling certain guitars and such. BTW if you've never heard a young Sungha Jung's arrangement, it's worth checking out.

Listen to Merle Travis, Thom Bresh, Jerry Reed or Richard Smith and you'll hear that Travis Picking is not a repeating pattern, a la the technique in Dust In The Wind.
Also, the recording was made with a 12 string guitar, hence the high notes you've arranged as a second guitar.
