    I just bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and have played out with it twice now. It's awesome! I use it direct to the PA (we use in ear monitors) and run my reverb, tremolo & delay through the effects loop and use my compressor and tube screamer in front of the Mooer. Really a well thought out and great sounding unit. Now I can just take a guitar and my pedal board (this thing fits nicely on my pedal board) and I'm good to go.

      I love the fact that I can really fine tune it to get the exact sound I want. My problem right now is that I sometimes use a sound more than once, my live show uses 3 guitars (Les Paul, Strat and Jem jr.) and I haven't had the time to sit down and tweek them into the user presets. Just need more hours in the day. Lol. Prepping the show, filming for a vlog and getting ready to teach the next school year. Whew!

      A different story. I was browsing CZcams because I was bored, watched a video about a very funny looking guitar and after that I was directed automatically to another guy who presented this pre-amp. I was kinda surprised that music world had embraced technology and made a product like this - and it was also affordable. I knew beforehand there were pocket pods which were kinda the same but I also had heard they were kinda crappy. This was clearly above the crap level so I bought it - and also my first guitar ever. Yeah, true story, this particular piece of technology made me to start a new hobby and I could do it without disturbing my neighbours or my financial balance. I'm pretty sure it will serve me well through the first few years. Well, yeah, I kinda think I will buy some effects pedals but first I must study more than 10 chords and especially how to change smoothly between them. And if I some day dare to play without headphones I still won't need to hurry to invest in a real amp. Mind blown.

    I have a Line 6 Helix that I run through a Line 6 Power Cab, but I also have a Mooer Preamp Live that I run through a Tech 21 Power Engine 60. Both of these are in my home office: all my "real" gear and my recording studio are in the basement. In any event, since I got the Mooer I've found myself using it more often than the Helix. I find it easier to dial in the tones I regularly use with the Mooer, and the tones are frankly at least the equal of the ones in the Helix. I'm not a pedal freak: I stick to a pretty basic setup, but for someone who's used to having a dozen pedals in their signal path the Helix certainly allows more options and infinite tweaking. But man, do I love the Mooer.
    And BTW, Darrell is my favorite guitar guy to follow on YT. Great info, concise videos, and my most trusted reviewer of gear. Oh, and of course he's just an AWESOME player!

      Hi! I have helix floor and now I want to buy mooer preamp live to use it in loop of helix, just because I think it will be great to switch different tones on mooer by snapshots (and midi) on helix, and this kind of setup I think will be much better for live using, than just helix. What do you think, is it good idea? Thank you. Greetings from Ukraine!

      I wonder if they overcame the problem of signaI degradation (the signal to noise ratio was really bad and the overall sound was muddy), I bought 2 Mooer pedals in 2012 and each of them had this problem and other players also notticed that with their own pedals. They were just like Behringer pedals but in a metal shell. I didn`t follow Mooer all those years, so maybe it`s ok now. If they solved this then they would be winners soon

    • @jafethuerta

  • @TheRealTush
    @TheRealTush Před 4 lety +1

    Still the best demo of this awesome unit :) But no demo will ever do it justice, you need to try it out yourselves.
    I got mine after watching this video about a year ago, and it has slowly become the most important part of my rig. It provides so much versatility and of course convenience, but the versatility part is the most important.
    I mostly "4 cable it", and use it with my favourite amp (Laney L5t), where it is the amps preamp I am using, and then have the ability to blend the Cab Sim (IR of my choice) with the amps cab miced up. And also the option to use it as a powerful MIDI controller, as it has both MIDI in & out. The boost options are very good with the real amp in use as well, and use them as post preamp boosts. By it being digital, you would be concerned that there would be some noticeable latency, but there is not. The latency is so low, that it is imperceivable by the human ear. You will get much more latency, by walking away from the amp, or having it placed far from you.
    The extremely low latency, coupled with the tone capture feature, is really what sets this unit apart from all other modeling units. And that is likely because of the fact, that it focuses primarily on being a preamp modeller, that will work with your existing gear, and not as a replacement for your amp, although it works perfectly for that as well. And the tone capture feature really allows you to have your perfect backup rig, as an integral part, of your primary rig. Ingenious solution, to a real life issue and constant challenge.
    So, I mostly "4 cable" it, but I will also frequently use it, to replace my preamp, when I don't have the option, to drag my actual amp with me. And if I have the option to use it with a nice effect loop on a tube amp, I will do that, but if not, I just take a pedal sized power amp with me, that I can use with a cab. And if either the replacement amp or the cab isn't working, I always have the option to go direct.
    And the fantastic and most brilliant part of this, is that no matter the situation, I have the same rig, and the almost exact same amp tone. I say almost exact, but it is so close, that I can only hear the difference, when A/B'ing it with my actual amp in the room, and if I use it with my amps poweramp, then I can't hear any difference at all.
    I know I am raving about it, and yes many other do as well, and for the most part I am always sceptic of that when it happens. But, seriously, this is worth all the hype.
    Yes, I prefer to gig with my actual amp, it is more satisfying, especially when the amp is my favourite amp (Laney L5t), and I don't want to play anything else. But I still want this unit on the board, as an integral part of my rig. Let me clarify that, I cannot live without it on my board, even when I am just "4 cabling" it, and not really using it for its modelling purpose.
    And of course it is very good to use, if you need to practice at home, or if you need to record silently at home. I live in an apartment, and for that alone I would get this unit, but to me, that is just a bonus feature.

    Darrell, great review/demo as usual. One question: what are you running it through? I have my share of classic amps but for recording I've been using a Line 6 Helix, which I recently coupled to a Line 6 Powercab 112, replacing the Tech 21 PowerEngine 60 I'd been using. I've been thinking of getting one of these Mooers to run through the PE 60 in my garage workshop (never know when you want to play some Rivera Paradise between spraying coats of Lake Placid blue, lol). Thanks for the demo fellow Canuck! All these preamps and profiling amps are getting really damn good. Very impressive indeed. But there is just something missing in even the best ones, in my opinion, and that's the power section dynamics of a true tube. I am a relatively open minded to new stuff like this, and always give it a chance. I played a nice modelling amp for a long time and it wasn't until I plugged back into a cranked Marshall that I realized what I was missing. That power tube break up is really hard to replicate I guess. In any case, this will suit the needs of 90% of guitarists who will buy them.

    Hi Darrell! Thanks for this awesome video! I was wondering if you might be able to help me out with a couple of questions since I´m a noob when it comes to pre amp pedals. I was checking out all the cool Moore mini pre amp pedals, and my question is: Is this pre amp live pedal like all of those pedals in one single piece of equipment? Also, I saw in other videos that the different mini pre amp pedal give you different tones and distorsions, and I was thinking about buying a couple of those along with a Moore radar pedal. Would the combination of some mini pre amps and the moore radar, or the combination of the pre amp live and the Moore radar give me all I need regarding distorsion and clean amp tones? and which one of these 2 options would you suggest? (I would use an old Digitech RP355 for the effects only since I hate the distorsions it offers, which is why I want to learn more about the pre amp pedals)
    Thanks in advance for the help and for all your cool videos. You just earned a subscriber!

    Hey man, amazing review. I have a very specific question. I hope you can help me out.
    I am trying to set up a pedal board with Line6 HX Effects (for all pedals) and the Mooer preamp live (for amp and cab sims) along with a couple of expression pedals hooked up to the Line6 HX Effects.
    My question is, in a live setting would I need to add a portable power amp to the signal chain? (Something like a Mooer baby bomb or Harley Benton GPA-100 or the Seymour Duncan power amp series)
    Is it necessary? And if it is, where should it be in the signal chain in context to what I wrote above? I’m unable to find this information. I want the Mooer preamp live to be at the end of my signal chain so I’m able to send the XLR out to front of house. Please advice! Thanks once again and great video I subscribed.

    Wow it's late March 2020 and I just found this video and I've been following your page for a bit. I have been researching for a preamp pedal (for about 4 months now) to go on my board and just go direct to the house sound while using in ear monitor for my vocal and guitar. This just may fit the bill. And It appears I can put my other favorite pedals through the effects loop. My brother has a Kemper and has struggle with the programming and all the foot switches. I went over and helped him some but honestly I just want something user friendly. I know they are fabulous when dialed in but again something with simple visual layout is what I prefer. I want something more straight forward and simple. And I definitely need a couple good clean options as I play a variety of cover music. Thanks so much for this video. I am a bit late to the party here on this review but I am going to research this some more as it appears thanks to your review I may have found the ticket here for my needs at a price I can afford. I have lugged around amps all of my life. At my age I want to make playing more about getting up and running quickly with less to haul.

    Hi, It looks and sounds fantastic :). I'm really curious if I can use my pedalboard in front in live situations. I suppose the EFX loop of Mooer would work well with delay, reverb, or modulation effects. That's ok, but what about sending my favorite boost and OD pedals in front of the Mooer preamp and finally sending Mooer's sign into the PA?? Would it sound similar without running my tube amp behind? Or it would behave in a strange way? I'd like to know if I can use my set-up as a "NO-AMP" rig with my pedalboard or it is completely out of the picture. Thx

    clicking the factory reset on the software, it says will reset all factory default. My question is, will this only apply to the Live stompbox or even include the defaults inside the software? I want to keep the 12 original preamp channels in the software.

    Some guys were in a race to review this Preamp Live recently. Yet, I would not want to believe what they say until I see you reviewing this thing.
    Few weeks ago you also reviewed the mooer multieffect (the GE 200), which also has that IR feature and some amp models as well. How do you think of them in comparison?

    • @DarrellBraunGuitar
      @DarrellBraunGuitar  Před 6 lety +3

      Thanks!
      I do my best to show all facets of a product I'm reviewing.
      The GE200 is much more versatile as it's a multi fx unit.
      The Preamp live is much more specialized and needs to be used with other pedal if you want to use delay, reverb etc.
      I think it sounds really really good though, and can give a person a high quality amp sound for any genre.

    Darrel, great review. This preamp seems to have some serious flexibility. I like the idea of being able to control it through phone and computer. The single biggest issue I noticed was the low end in the higher gain patches sounded pretty flubby and unappealing. Was that just in the patches and setup or did you notice that universally across the high gain settings? At least a couple of the clips you played on the patches did not include the bass strings, was this done intentionally?

    • @DarrellBraunGuitar
      @DarrellBraunGuitar  Před 6 lety

      Thanks!
      Honestly, most of that is from my Les Paul Traditional 😄
      It's sooo creamy for playing single note lines though.
      The EQ section works really well, so if you want to tighten up some bass frequencies it would be easy enough to do

    • @PicksPaints
      @PicksPaints Před 6 lety

      Ok cool. I wasn't sure if it was the guitar/pickups or in the EQ of the pedal. It sounded really great on the single note stuff. On the lower gain and clean it sounded really good as well. It was just on the high gain it was kinda farting out on the lower strings. Thanks for addressing that Darrell.

    • @TobyBurt
      @TobyBurt Před 6 lety +2

      Use 4 cable method and you can choose to have your amps preamp in the circuit via the fx loop (will be interesting running parallel preamps for some totally different sounds) etc, unless you are happy with tone capturing your preamp, in that case yeah - just through the fx loop is the "correct" way.

    Lovely review! What's a simple way to connect this to a PC? Is it best to use an analogue mixer into PC sound card via RCA. Is any software needed? . Or can you go direct via USB (digital) ? . Just wondering what works best.
    Would it work well with a simple audio interface box (I have Edirol UA25) with guitar jack inputs and RCA output to a hifi amp.
    Sorry for all the questions!

    I just bought a 2nd hand Mooer GE200 for a very reasonable price and am waiting on delivery. I like the demos of the unit that you and Brett Kingman have done, so we'll see what my experience with it will be. Who knows? Perhaps it will replace one of my Boss GT-1 units, and I'm curious to try a head to head between the two. It would also be interesting to hear you do a head to head between the GE200 and this Preamp Live. I'm thinking that both of them are digital modelers and might use the same DSP and algorithms. If so, they should sound essentially the same but there's only one way to find out!

    • @DarrellBraunGuitar
      @DarrellBraunGuitar  Před 6 lety +1

      Nice!
      The micro preamps on the Preamp live are very different than the sounds on the GE200.
      With a little tweaking (stock settings tend to be uninspiring) both can sound really great!

    • @MarcCoteMusic
      @MarcCoteMusic Před 6 lety

      Interesting... and a little surprising... Now I really want a head to head... I suppose one of the first things I do, after a bit of discovery with the GE200, is throw in some 3rd party IRs.
