Skimming a small wall with Thistle Multi Finish plaster, a second coat went on later

  • I skimmed this wall with Multi Finish plaster to give a smooth face for decorating, but the plaster went off too fast, it was an old bag of plaster that had been open a few weeks, & a really warm room are a bad mix, I put a second coat on later in the same way with new plaster that went on better, I should know by now that if you have an open bag just throw it away even if it's only a few days old, it's cheap enough to replace n not worth the hassle of the mix going off before your ready,

    Nice and neat job, im the opposite to you, been plastering about 15 years and carpentry approx 2 years, if you don't mind me passing on a couple of tips,
    Glue the wall twice, once for the wall, once for you, helps control suction and stops it drying so fast.
    If you can hear the trowel scratching the wall your laying on too thin and give it two coats, makes all the difference.
    Otherwise good work my friend,
    Im sure you could tell me loads of things about joinery/carpentry

      Ha yeah thanks, always appreciate advise, wouldn't know where to start discussing joinery but would help if asked, there's lots of Albums of the last 6-7yrs work showing the process of construction on my FB page if that is of any help. :D Normally don't have too much prob with the plaster, i like it when it dries just enough to float like velvet, this was an old bag, i should know by now to have thrown it away but it was only a couple of wks old, I think :D prob not the best video to share but i think i just wanted to show/let people witness me getting it on the wall, I think that was one of the main things i learnt was to get it on asap as flat as poss, then you'll have time to go back n make good. i put a second coat on later after buying a fresh bag, ;)

      Thanks, Maybe,
      I've been a joiner/carpenter 34yrs, mostly working on sites where i can see the plasterers working, if they'd all started at the top than that's how i'd have copied, don't remember any doing it that way. Not long after leaving school i worked for a builders for a short time where i learnt to plaster amongst other things & I've plastered many many walls & ceilings since then, some people say you should plaster around the edges then fill in the gap in the middle, next time i plaster I'll fill in the top first but you have to skim upwards or across to keep it on the trowel, skimming down is only really poss once the plaster is on the wall, Not sure i see the reason for starting at the top apart from not dribbling or marking the bits you've done., prob the most important thing i learnt is to get the plaster on the wall flat & even asap, it goes off slower than in the bucket giving more time to fettle it smooth. I'm always open to learning tho......

    Great job. Would it be suitable to use multi finish over a mist coated wall? We recently had some walls reskimmed but the job was very poor and there's marks, lines and divits everywhere after I applied a mist coat, so I'm thinking about giving it a once over myself.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi, Thanks, 👍
      It's not easy for me to advise on that, I'm a joiner who does some plastering, 😉 My plastering is good enough to paint straight on to, i take a little care to get it flat, but until it's dry it's hard to see,
      The majority of plaster work needs sanding flat, I don't think in the building trade, immediately ready to paint is expected, there's always some prep to do to it by a decorator, a thin white primer put on which seals the plaster & shows up any marks, that's what that first coat is for, sounds like yours, without seeing yours i would sand flat any lumps then use fine powdered filler, you can buy bags about a third the size of a bag of plaster & use a extra wide filler knife,
      I've plastered on top of paint & seen it done & removed old stuff where its put on top of paint, if it's just a fresh mist coat then it should be fine, older paint needs a good coarse sand & a coat of diluted PVA to seal it & help the the plaster to stick. i think the acetate in PVA (Polyvinyl acetate) helps remove grease,
      You might get a better answer from this man czcams.com/users/macplastering

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  Před 5 lety

      Yeah some are rough, If your not used to plastering then the question is would you be able to skim it better than what's already there, in this video i mistakenly used a bag of plaster that had been open too long & went off fast, 20mins, but with fresh plaster you don't have much longer to get it on the wall n flat, Maybe have a go 😉😀 or maybe using filler is a safer option that can be sanded flat easier, Best of luck, 👍

      Score the wall with a Stanley knife in a diagonal criss cross pattern a few inches apart,PVA twice,the second one should still be tacky just before you plaster.This method guarantee's the plaster doesn't blow as it gives a good key.I also use this method on old walls if they're quite smooth.

    I'm looking to skim coat the whole house as the walls have bumps and dints almost everywhere. As the walls are all painted, what PVA brand + water ratio would you recommend?

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  Před 4 lety +5

      Hi Emma, it's hard to say, you don't need much, i just put a big dash in enough water to coat the wall, I like it to be quite thin like skimmed milk, any thicker & it's too gluey on the wall if that makes sense, between 5-1 & 10-1 but prob somewhere closer to 10-1, It's hard to judge the quality of PVA, I buy stuff from the Milfords builders merchants normally when I'm buying plaster but would get the cheap no-nonsense stuff from Screwfix.
      Your walls should be sanded to help give a key for the plaster, the acetate in PVA will help remove grease as well as gluing/sealing loose dusty material on the wall.

      @@Gidjoiner thanks for your reply :) I'll give the pva a look on the internet. Would you recommend skimming for first timers? My whole house has bumps and dints in almost every area of the wall, so I was thinking of skimming it myself, but as a first timer I dont want to make it worse. This video of yours makes it seem like the plastering itself and the smooth finish is effortless

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  Před 4 lety +3

      😂 I'm a joiner but I've plastered a lot so i find it relatively easy but It's far from effortless, once you start you can't really stop midway, If i was you I'd have a go on a small wall like this, you'll only learn by trying, you'd only need a black bucket & a mixer in a drill to mix it, one tip i have is once mixed get it on the wall in a fairly even thickness asap, then you'll be able to manipulate it as quick as poss to get it flatter, it'll start to go off so don't over work it or you'll push it into lumps, once it's something like flat leave it for 10mins-ish, it'll dry a bit & will be easier to flatten more, wet any areas that are drying so the trowel/float doesn't stick & try to keep the trowel clean from plaster that will start to dry on it, it'll fall off onto the bit that you've just made nice n flat, any areas that are still quite wet n soft leave for a while longer & work on a different area, I don't think you'll make it worse & if you really do struggle & decide it's not for you, you can scrape it off before it dries too much, a bag of MuiltiFinish skim is £8, one bag will do a big wall one coat - ish, if you have big lumps they need to be sanded back before skimming if poss & hollows i would fill with the first coat, putting that first coat on so it just fills the hollows & the high points might be just showing through, the second coat will then go on more even , By the time you've done a few walls or most of the house you'll be able to come back to the first one n decide if you're happy with it, put another coat on if not, Go for it n see. 👍
