The best scribers for joinery I've ever had, Staedtler Mars Comfort 551 01 compass, modified point.
These scribers are made from a pair of Staedtler Mars Comfort 551 01 compasses, they are well made out of solid metal so there's no flex in them, easy to adjust with one hand, there's no play in the adjustment thread so they can be finely tuned, they don't squash in so if you press against a wall to scribe they won't loose the width setting or if dropped & they have a good holder for a normal pencil. If I were to lose these I would defiantly buy another pair exactly the same.
I've tried many different scribers over 40yrs as a joiner but a basic compass is hard to beat & these Staedtler ones are very good quality.

      Yep, I use it more now than the Dewalt, the Dewalt is corded & this is cordless, It's what I used on the reclaimed door cupboard. For a while I couldn't afford the dewalt mitre saw stand mounts, £60-£70 😱, always forgetting when I had time & a bit reluctant to take the ones of the Dewalt saw because I might want to put that saw on the stand one day, then when i did buy some mounts they sat in my room until I finally did get my a$$ in gear & got them on the Makita saw, then got poorly. 🤷‍♂️ But yeah it's the one I get out now. 👍

    I’ve been using a compass for scribing ever since I first saw you do it waaaay back. Before that I’d bought some of the “specialist” tools, none of which perform anywhere near as well. I’ve got a cheap Oxford pencil holder one out of a kids geometry set, a couple of Staedtler (one large, one small, both lead holders rather than pencil holders) and one from a Moore and Wright set that my dad got when he was an apprentice draughtsman about 75 years ago. All of them better than the specialist stuff!!! Keep up the good work Gid

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner Před 26 dny

      👍 Thanks, & yep when I first started I had a compass after watching 'the old men' doing it, mine was a kids school type which had crap adjustment & a long point that I wasn't keen on, I then went through multiple 'scribers' none of which were quite right, one had the threaded adjustment on the wrong side which meant you couldn't get it against the wall, & I kept trying other types, (none of these fancy scribers you can get now where you can spot the flaws just by looking at them, they're trying to reinvent the wheel & failing). Soo I've come to the conclusion & the reason I made this video is that a good pair of compasses is very hard to beat & maybe the the old men knew this, I just didn't know or realise at the time, it's taken 40yrs & now I'm the old man 🤦‍♂️😂👍

    Just ordered one! I've had a Trend Easyscribe for a while but never been happy with it. Thought being Trend it would be good but it's absolute rubbish. The worst tool I've even bought. Got the U-Scribe jig set last year and thats been great for holding filler pieces in position while scribing them, eapecially longer ones, but they come with the cheapest compass you could ever imagine which really lets them down. Love the jigsaw blade upgrade. Will have to try that when it arrives.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner Před měsícem

      👍 I have considered those U-Scribe jig sets, the hardest one for me is the trim piece at the top of a wardrobe up to the ceiling, often there's nothing to clamp to & if it's spayed banging some pins in isn't an option. Yep there's some rubbish out there on the market, too many trying to reinvent the wheel & failing, can't beat a good compass, I wouldn't have made this vid if I didn't believe in what I said about these ones & had tested them for quite a long time so I hope your's work out as well as mine, 👍 When I made the point I hammered a small nail in as a rivet, that split the compass leg a tiny bit, I think it's cast which is brittle, Mitre mate super glue fixed that, I then ground it to shape with a file or grinder after it was fixed in place, the outside wants to be straight so it doesn't have like a heel that prevents the point going against the wall, that was quite a few yrs ago now & everything is still fine. 👍

      😂 The main 16'x10' part of the shed where the saws are I threw up when I moved in to store 'stuff'. At that time I was still working on site with a box of tools, a bag of power tools & a couple of levels, The shed grew as I added bits but it never got a concrete floor that's why there's sawdust on the floor, nobody likes standing on bare ground, mud tends to travel. Also there's organised chaos because it was never really built properly, the back wall behind the mitresaw has studs at 1220 centres that were only enough to hold a board & the bottom is sat on bricks but is 20yrs+ old now so hanging shelving units on it isn't ideal, I plan on extending the back & when I do the mitresaw table is coming out & hopefully that back wall can then be rebuilt. The whole thing just got stuff put in & gets moved around to fit other stuff, so really there's not a lot to see that you don't see in the videos, stuff, cobwebs, wood, sawdust & overspray 😂😁👍

      😂 Yeah prob would cost as much, you could ask tho, an email with a pic costs nothing www.staedtler.com/uk/en/service/contact/, saying that postage to Aus. 🤔😮 & yep the mask is going to be a bit weird, my breathing really is going to sound like Darth Vader, & it's got a cod piece to go around the waste 😂

  • @figrollin

    mask no bad thing gid! did the doctors think the sawdust had any bearing on your lung infractions?

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner Před měsícem

      👍 No the drs didn't even look into it, they haven't got the money & therefore the time, they fix you up & get you out the door, I had an infection in my blood (Sepsis) that caused fluid on the lungs which created an ulcer, made a hole which then collapsed my lung, or I had an ulcer in my lung that caused the fluid which then rotted my lung, made a hole & got into my blood 🤷‍♂️ Either way when I'm spraying because I have stubble/a beard when I wear my other mask which is pretty good I can still taste a metallic type taste after spraying, So now my lung is partially damaged I guess it's time to make a bigger effort to look after myself a bit more, yrs of wood dust etc I've just lived, apparently they're mainly organic particles that your body can break down but these two part paints don't dissolve & so prob (definitely) aren't good to be breathing in 🤦‍♂️😂😂👍

    • @figrollin
      @figrollin Před měsícem

      @Gidjoiner I'm a doctor (not your doctor of course, so I can only guess) but I definitely would expect the lung infection came first. Whether the sawdust/wood had anything to do with it would be hard to prove, but protecting it now is ABSOLUTELY the right call. Stay healthy, pal. x

      I was thinking of fitting a face frame to a cupboard on top of my kitchen units (that empty space at the top), which means three sides (left, bottom and ceiling) need to be scribed - not sure how to do this!

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner Před měsícem

      Never easy fitting to three points, hard to say without seeing it & not easy to describe it text, but make the board wider & taller than needed, scribe up to the ceiling so the bottom is roughly where you want it, make it a little bigger than the final size, leave the line in + a bit when you cut. Then scribe to the left, again leave that a little long 5mm-ish, If you're not scribing to the right either scribe the left so the right fits where you want it or cut the right to size after the left is scribed, When it's almost where you want it scribe again to remove the 5mm excess you left on in the first scribe.. You would normally scribe in one direction, scribing left & up creates an offset in where you scribed to the wall, but just the tiny offset that 5mm creates shouldn't be noticeable,, Good luck 👍😁

      Gid, I reckon that a few videos on common things from a jobbing joiner perspective would be really valuable for a lot of viewers. I'm thinking back to some of your older short vids on hinges or why you use a particular sandpaper as examples. There's so much nonsense from people with these pristine workshops that just don't come across as having real world practical jobbing joiner experience. What has always set your videos apart is that you show real jobs in real houses. The value for apprentices is huge to see the reality where stuff isn't perfect.

      Thanks much appreciated, glad you like it 👍 I never cut off things like cills, this type of thing maybe built in but is classed as temporary/semi permanent, when someone one day removes this they don't want to find some muppet has cut the end of the cill off. The same goes for scribing around skirting, remove the cupboard & find some lazy d*ck has cut a slot in the skirting instead of taking the time to scribe around it. 😡

    That thing in the exhaust port of the biscuit jointer is probably mandatory, so people can't stick their finger in there. I've seen it on more tools. We have a big belt sander that clogs up when a piece of fiber comes off the belt. Quite a nuisance. You'd also need very long, thin fingers that can bend two different ways at once to reach anything that spins in there.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner Před měsícem

      That's what I presume but anyone daft enough to put their fingers in there deserves a bandaged finger, & there's a lot worse tools with exposed blades.. My shop extractor had a 2x2" square grid on the chip inlet which got clogged quickly, a sharp knife fixed that problem 👍
