One down, five to go. Repairs to Calgary’s water main system continue, and Phoenix Phillips looks at what to expect and why the entire line is not being replaced.

Calgary Taxpayers will ensure the outrageous threshold to recall our mayor is adjusted accordingly to ensure this abuse of power is never able to happen again! 😡
Due to the type of pipe used, this feeder will continue to rupture. It is passed its best before date. The City needs to hurry up an build an alternate while this one is still hanging on. Maybe pipes up both north and south Stoney Trail that will tie in with infrastructure at the higher elevations.
Uh Hyprescon does not really expire.... I know I have installed miles of it. Maybe you should watch a video or two about how that type of high pressure pipe is made.
Well, Stampede is still continuing..... That means there's no restrictions anymore. You dont want me to shower and do my laundry, but you'll bring in tourist money to pay for your spending spree... @@Nicklan1961Because oddly enough, as evident by the pipe breaking, concrete erodes over 50 years and needs to be replaced with modern plumbing. Too bad it's just being hooked up to more concrete that'll just break another km or two down. It's genuinely funny now. Most cities review their infrastructure every 10-20 years. Calgary continues to be the most shortsighted and ill-engineered city I've lived in with each passing day. Like you're telling me one pipe feeds 60% of the city with no fallback??? This city has engineering schools and nobody has heard of redundancy???
Like I didn't expect much of the city that uses sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) to treat it's water instead of a rational option but let's do the math here. 60% of the city is affected by the main failure. Calgary's population is 1,665,000. 60% of 1,665,000 is 999,000. That's 1 million people ±1000 reliant on one pipe. Everyone responsible should resign immediately. I'm not saying the mayor who inherited a faulty system, but the decades of engineers who let this terrible system fly.
@@MrGriefCreep modern plumping would be the Large PVC pipes most use but some do use pre cast concrete still which is available so why go to LA for Steel Pipe.
Thanks San Diego, we really appreciate your help here in Calgary! But I have to wonder, with Calgary being the huge oil and gas mecca that it is, why don't we have these pipes readily available here? We definitely have the materials and fabrication facilities, not to mention other major cities in Canada. It would be interesting to know why our mayor sourced San Diego. I guess it all comes down to the fact you guys had these pipes readily available on hand. But again, why didn't Calgary? Given the fact the age of our infrastructure and size of our city (820sq km, 1.5 million) and that this infrastructure is in need of upgrading. That's a no-brainer. Hopefully this will send a message to our mayor and to other cities across North America to be better prepared.
