Well Mike, you have certainly touched a nerve on your comment, " If this is the way they manage the place on the outside, can you imagine what they're not showing you on the inside ! " You are exactly right. If these so called ' contractors' don't care about the site conditions when it comes to erosion control ; one can certainly conclude that this attitude probably will continue with the physical construction of the homes themselves ! As a semi-retired Vocational H.S. instructor I applaud your observations. Thanks, Bill S.

Back in my mis-spent youth, I worked for an industrial electronic organization. The owner, German ancestry was walking thru the assembly department, stopped next to a tech workstation, bent down and picked up a 10-32 nut from the floor and held it with two fingers. He put it about 5"'s from the techs face and said " do you know what I pay for this hardware? Don't waste my money or risk your job". That made an impression on me and all of my fellow workers.

I worked a job in California as Project Manager. The laws in that State include a one million dollar fine for mud and dust not being abated.... We worked clean... That included washing all trucks and other vehicles before they exited the site and if there was a transition from dirt to a paved area there was a gravel approach with a clean off area.... every vehicle, every day, every time...We also had a contract with a street sweeper company and also used a lot of cold patch to temporary construct approach areas. When we worked on streets installing new services we washed and swept all driveways, yards and shrubbery. We actually received compliments to the "Authorities" for our efforts.

We actually wish people would complain more because we have the ability to hold a developer's toes to the fire. The reality is over 90% of these developers don't live anywhere near the projects that they are working on. They turn a blind eye unless we put pressure on them. That pressure can be simply a phone call or utilizing public outlets to call out what they are doing.

    Hi Mike,
My husband and I really enjoy watching your channel.
We’ve seen how well tract homes (we call them that on the west coast) are built. My aunt bought a tract house in the 60’s. Sadly in the early 90’s she had a fire in her kitchen (she was not home at the time, thankfully) and the smoke and fire damage was such that a new wall needed to go up between two bedrooms. When the wall was taken down you could see that it was made from 2x4s that were ripped in half. The walls were only 2 ins. thick before the drywall was up.
My husband and I were stunned!
I hope the ones where the muddy road is, are built with better quality! 😅
When you put the diesel in your truck we were wondering where the counter was to tell how much fuel you’ve used and how much you have left, is.
Thanks for sharing your daily adventures with us!

I'd never call on that construction site if it was only about 1 week's time, but to allow it for over a week I'd rat them out. Most State's require a silt fence and or rock/gravel roadway.

Every construction site I have been on needed a tracking pad installed to prevent excessive dirt and debris from reaching the main road. I agree on the tank vent especially if it snows and freezes then the weep holes get plugged up and the water goes right into the fuel. I’d either go with the old style mushroom cap or two elbows and have it pointing downward with a screen over the end to keep insects from making nuisance homes in the pipe.

You are correct, Mike. That vent is for venting fumes and air while filling. It will keep most moisture out but not all. A simple solution is to cover it with a coffee can, like others have said. My pump is like yours. 7 turns of the crank is one gallon. 35 turns is exactly 5 gallons. Tested with a volume can. Have a great week!

When I was in charge of our sediment control and stormwater management department for a county in Maryland, we would have gone in, shut down all construction activities, and had them clean up the mess before they were able to do anything else. All of the lots that were under construction would have been required to have stabilized construction entrances (aka: gravel). Many times, if the weather got really bad (like flood events), the builders would shut themselves down until the weather got better. Fines weren't out of the question, but we tried to work with the development community. I would be willing to bet that the local governing body is already aware of the problem because it presents a public safety hazard with all that slick mud on the road.

100% call your local County Conservation office or DEP. I worked in site development for over 20 years and I could tell you our jobs here in York county would be shut down on their first visit if they came and saw that mess.

Well I'm glad to hear the DEP in your state does their job because here in NJ they look the other way with mud on the roads and streams especially when Big $$$ is doing the work and us little guys ( taxpayers) and the people who the DEPs mission statement says are here to protect ignore us.
NJ DEP is broken period !
These idiots sit on their hands all day and make excuses as to why they have no authority to do anything about the offenders.
      Totally sickening !

Hey Mike! Long time viewer...first time commenting! You mentioned a bed cover at the car wash. I have a Diamondback cover on my 2016 F250 8ft bed. Best thing I've added to the truck! Have the HD model and haul stuff on top every week, from lumber to ATVs. Exceptional product, in my opinion. Always enjoy your content and you have inspried some ideas on our 100 acre property in New Brunswick, Canada. Cheers!

Mike a suggestion if I may!!! I am not sure there is a device but you could use a under truck high pressure spray at the top of the driveway!!! It would wash the salt out of the frames of all the vehicles!!! It would help the vehicles last longer in your area!!! Vicki and I always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one!!!...Dave

I was in the coal business for 25 years and we had the same problem with coal trucks pulling onto the highway dragging mud onto the road. When it happened, there was a State Trooper standing in my office TELLING me what I WAS going to do. Ended up putting in a truck tire wash at the entrance to the job with a man standing there washing every wheel on the truck before pulling onto the highway. Then there was also a Dept. of Reclamation inspector handing me violations if the truck cleaning wasn't up to his review.

The mud is the worst safety concern early on in even a light rain. That is usually slicker than the best grease.

I worked in a position of responsibility in commercial construction for over 25 years, in small and major markets. It was always a huge deal to NOT mud out the city/county roads. The township is failing in their duty to be on the developer's case about this. If this is not being addressed by the township, something sketchy may be up.

Mike , that vent on your fuel tank is designed that way to do 4 different things, the top of it is designed to allow fumes to be expelled upward when the tank is being filled ( esp. for gasoline) and also to prevent a low pressure condition (vacuum) in the tank when the wind is blowing past the vent pipe. This type of vent is used by thousands of gas stations.

Do yourself a favor and put 4 post in the ground and build a roof over the whole tank
If you only had a sawmill!
Protect it from rain, snow sunshine ect . While still keeping it separate for safety
Also post is a good place to mount a fire extinguisher and maybe a box with emergency spill supplies

    Hi Mike
I agree to not making a call to “authorities” as well but think contacting finding out who the construction companies are and calling their site managers about it. It seems that home builders are in a big hurry to complete builds and cut corners big time, so I agree with your take on the insides too. That level of dirt and mud on the roads is unacceptable. I also notice cement trucks cleaning out in empty lots that are going to be used for new builds which is also unacceptable. Good luck and thanks for the great videos.

If it bothers you enough to make a video about it, then be direct and make contact with the project lead/manager. Making a passive aggressive comment about a car wash in your message seems petty, especially leaving it on their FB page. Pick up a phone, or stop on site if you see people working. I agree it is a mess they should clean up/address it. We are too quick to jump on the keyboard about things we should actually handle the old school way. I like your channel, but hope you practice what you preach about being a good person, be direct if needed and take the high road.

  • @ChuckisOutside

You need a vent on the tank to prevent negative pressure inside the tank which could cause the tank to collapse. The upward direction of the vent could be to direct flame impingement up away from the vapor space in case of a fire, more important with a gasoline tank than a diesel tank because of the higher flash point. I like the idea of a can over it to prevent moisture from entering. Thanks for the video.

JODY husband Sam here. I had a customer who lived near a landfill and he had a skiddstir with a brush so he contracted with them to keep the roads clean. They never paid him. He talked to every person with "authority within the company and got nowhere so he stopped cleaning the roads. Guess what, his neighbors got on him for not doing his ""job"" Frustrating!! By the way they went bankrupt, never payed the township and businesses that they dealt with, my business being one of many. Thanks for letting me vent.

My family were developers and home builders. We made sure that the road was cleaned up each and every night It was the right thing to do and kept everything clean and safe. My parents and in-laws were old school and they would always do the right thing. I still see the same thing in my neighborhood today and residence do call the town and it gets costly. I saw a lady out on the road on a walk just this past fall, power spraying the road. She told me if she didn't clean it up the town was going to levy a $3,000 fine. Ouch . Can't wait to see the wood splitter back in action. That is a very impressive piece of equipment, I wish you could score that for a good price and keep it :)
