Sam Reid said he hopes AMC puts a trigger warning in some episodes and I really wished they listened to him cause boy was this episode BRUTAL. It legit had me sobbing cause it just brought back terrible memories of seeing someone you love be hurt in such a way. When Louie is telling Claudia that it’s okay and that their done fighting that sense of calm you feel at the second only for the abuse to happen again broke me.
Television wise this was such a well directed and acted episode, everyone brought their A-game but story wise I don’t see how Louie and Lestat are endgame after this, unless Claudia was exaggerating the events which some feel like that may be the case. Still, it doesn’t make the situation okay and Louie who spent days trying to tell Daniel that he was not a victim or abused now sounds like he’s trying to make excuses for Lestat’s behavior which is yikes to say the least. Next episode, Lestat is out the house and tries love-bombing Louie and Claudia to forgive him, Claudia won’t fall for it but I believe Louie will.

This episode was so raw and brutal. It took me about an hour to process and formulate my thoughts. So many heavy moments in this one episode alone. I knew the adorable family bliss moments from episode 4 wasn't going to last, but damn... It was a great episode. Gut-wrenching, very difficult at times to watch, but very good. I think this is my favorite episode right along with the pilot episode.
Side note, the scene where Louis is messing with Daniel's arm and the slap was so well done. Louis' good bye to Grace was also a very tender moment where I shed my first tear. You just feel so sad for Louis.

I’m going to be a little controversial here and say I didn’t mind Lestat being violent in the episode. Now I know In all future books Lestat has been sort of soften up into a better person because “Louis POV”, but in the first book he was absolutely abusive (perhaps not physically but emotionally certainly) and I don’t think that’s an incorrect interpretation of his character.
It’s different and I wonder how this will change future seasons if they adapt anything in future books, but I don’t think it’s incorrect.
This show has been funny and romantic at times but it was never meant to be a romcom, it’s a story about two monsters that love each other in spite of themselves. It’s dark and deeply messed up but so is murdering hundreds of innocent people in throw away jokes.
Personally I feel like a lot of modern gay representation is so toothless and cutesy. I’m glad for the more messy, complicated dark romance that straight people have always had.
My only complaint is that I would have like more intimate and affectionate moments between Louis and Lestat before this point to really sell why they have stayed together despite everything and to harshly contrast the current reality.

Same! I was shook and was completely against it at first but then thinking about Lestat’s personality and everything that he says and does both in the books and show, it seems logical he would take one more step to being physically abusive. He did say he would never harm Louis or Claudia in TVL but irl abusers deny they hit their spouses all the time. I hate this change because it’s so realistic and deep down I know this is not exactly uncharacteristic for Lestat and it hurts to think about it.

However Anne Rice clearly loved Lestat so she spent the following books reinforcing his version of events and making Louis into a straight up liar or delusional (unintentionally or not).
The show seems to be leaning more into the interpretation that the truth is somewhere in the middle and I actually like that.

The big difference is that although Louis does admit selfish action lead him to rescue Claudia he unfairly blames Lestat for saving her after he begged him to. • @jelenavucic2293
    @jelenavucic2293 Před rokem +21

Not gonna lie, I cried in this episode. It works for me for now and let me tell you why. Let's see what's in the show. Lestat made Luis for his own (selfish) reasons but he did that with consent (something he didn't experience if they'll keep that fact from the book and I think they will because of all the hints). In the show he showed all the bad sides of being a vampire before he made an offer, so Luis knew very well what he was getting into and was giving vibes that he's in love with Lestat or at least infatuated just as Lestat is. Lestat is not perfect and he might not react appropriately all the time but it is clear in the show that he was trying to make Luis feel good and happy as a vampire, he wanted to set him free (he even did things he didn't want to or care about for Luis). The most notible of all - in the show he made Claudia because Luis asked. Even though he knew it was not a good idea, he did it for him so that Luis would have his redemption and be finally happy. Did he hope it will fix things between them? Probably. It is clear he is doubting Luis ever loved him because Luis never actually said it or showed it really. So Lestat is clinging to hope that one day Luis will love him back in equal measure. Is it a healthy approach to a relationship? No. But he's thinking of off fear, his greatest fear of loneliness. He is also a very emotional creature which I think is why he needs Antoanette. Not because he really wants her but because its a defence mechanism - living in this illusion that there is a person who loves him even if it's not the one he chose.
The same thing happens with Claudia. The show clearly shows that in the beginning he was a good dad, in his way he tried to educate her and help (yes, burning Charlie was a way of his to get through to her and make her realise things). So in his mind he is giving his all to these two who in the end hate him for "making" them into what they are. And I'm like, you asked for it! And, Claudia, dear, it's on Luis you're a vampire (and she knows it, says it herself). And yet, all the negative feelings are thrown to Lestat who just takes it, like he takes the years long sulking and ignoring.
One of the best moments in this episode was when Claudia called Lestat out on his weakness - he gets rude and confrontational when he's scared. It is another defense mechanism because of all the trauma he experienced in Europe - the place he ran away from and is trying (in his wrong way) to stop his two beloved people from going to. He is being truthful about how cruel the European vampires are and this episode showed us that in Killer and in Lestat. I actually love the fight scene because:
    1. Lestat reached his limit with what he can take (he calls it a betrayal and it really is, in his eyes he did everything for them and they are going to leave him alone - hurt him in the worst way)
    2. By fighting Luis he demonstrated just how violent the European vampires are, he is one after all. He said it himself that he tried desperately not be that way (is that why he ran from Paris?) And now he lost control which is definitely going to be traumatic because I am sure he knows he is not supposed to hurt someone he loves. And he does love Luis, he still does.
    3. He asks Luis to be honest about his feelings, to stop "leading him on" because he thinks that's happening. And Luis doesn't give him a straight answer which I'm sure hurts Lestat.
So in the end, from Luis's and Claudia's pov Lestat is keeping them locked up and doesn't really care about them. From Lestat's pov they are using his love to take his freedom away (which he charishes) and are hating him for things he is not guilty of.
It is very unhealthy but also very realistic and the escalation is in my opinion done well.
So, yes, it is different form the books but I personally like it so far. I want to see where it will go. I find all of the characters intriguing and would love to have Lestat centre stage in Se2 because I think the guy is harboring some serious trauma and I think the show will not shy away from it.

    • @StrawberryShorty

I think the problem with it is partially the race swap. They've done a very poor job of making me feel like Louis has much of a reason to love or even like Lestat up until this point. They have a few moments, but that's it. I've mostly been fine with the race changes here, because the writers have actually made these changes relevant to the story. All the white people being villainous makes sense for the time period, and even in the book version, Lestat was portrayed as something of a villain. Then this episode has Claudia being randomly assaulted by a white vampire, Lestat beating the living daylights out of Louis, and a preview for the next episode showing Claudia claiming they are Lestat's "slaves" and she's going to free them. This makes me fear that the show is trying to force some race message after all, and that's not a good thing.

    • @jelenavucic2293
      @jelenavucic2293 Před rokem +1

@@StrawberryShorty Yeah, maybe. I honestly don't really see it as a race thing, but that's maybe because my culture doesn't have slavery in it's history and we are not really a nation where racism is the thing. So me not seeing it in this is maybe because of that, my pov and experience is different from the people in the USA. I hope they don't make it a thing, because you don't really need that angle in this dynamic. But, if they somehow manage to add it in a meaningful and interesting way I'd be OK with it. At first I was too confused about the race swap but as you said the writers made it work. I have faith in them so far.
As for Luis not having a reason to love Lestat, I think he has but I think he is preoccupied with his redemption and depression (which, both are valid) to be able to remember why he liked Lestat. And I also think that it goes with his character to not show love openly - which can cause problems if your partner needs love to be shown that way.

Antoinette is under the impression that Louis and Lestat have an open marriage and protected them by refusing to gossip. Most of the white people we see are female prostitutes or entertainers who work for Louis and have less power than him in the world, or customers waiting their turn, who we know little about, but they are willing to frequent a business owned by a Black man.
But the white men with speaking parts are portrayed as evil almost across the board. Those are the interactions the unreliable narrators choose to highlight. Consider that when you judge Lestat.

I assumed, which may never be confirmed or denied by the show, that Claudia couldn't make a new vamp either because she was too young a vamp herself and therefore didn't have the power, or because she didn't have the skill to drink to just the point of death with them and so was over or under drinking and it wouldn't take.

This comment contains book and 90’s movie spoilers(ish), so if you haven’t already and want to read/watch them- don’t read this.
In the books she couldn’t make a new vampire bc she was an actual child. She was physically too small to take or give enough blood to turn someone. I’m not sure if they are still using that reasoning since she has been aged up? Louis WOULDN’T do it until Claudia begged him to in Paris, but even then it didn’t last bc Armand did what Armand does and killed them both to try to manipulate Louis into staying with him. (There’s more that goes into it but if you watch the 90’s movie, you’ll catch the drift of it almost the same as in the 1st book.)

“Unless she can find another vampire her age”…. Where could she possibly find another vampire with the body of a teenager? Oh wait…. I’m starting to suspect they’ll change how the relationships work between Armand, Louis, Claudia…. And I’m starting to wonder if Daniel’s story with Armand won’t be done with Rashid instead. The other thing I’m also quite suspicious of is if you look at opening segment of episode 1, there are pictures of Daniel at various ages. All of them are of the actor, except the one that might be from the 70s which appears to be another actor as a young Daniel. Could we be getting a San Francisco flashback?
It was a destabilizing episode as a book reader, but I can’t shake off the feeling that for all the changes the series not only works as its own thing, but also that it really captures something of Rice in a unique way, and perhaps the most important: it may not be even close to faithful to the first book, but it’s a great vampire drama. Highlight of the episode: the acting. The three mains are fantastic. Sam Reid was absolutely possessed and scary in this one (though his pseudo French when angry is atrocious, not easy not get distracted by this as a native speaker).

THIS EPISODE BROKE ME. It started off rather campy and goofy and eventually took an extremely dark turn. I didn't expect to be terrified and in tears, especially at the end of the episode. Even though her killing innocent people is EVIL, whatever happened to Claudia by that other vampire was HORRIFIC. The scene between Louis and his sister was HEARTBREAKING. And the sequence at the end of the episode was DIFFICULT TO WATCH. It was a mixture of nightmare fuel and tearjerking. What's so scary is that there are families who are in these types of situations and the children get caught in the crosshairs. Just seeing Claudia terrified and trying to stop Lestat from continuing to beat Louis got me. This gives Claudia more incentive to FEAR and HATE Lestat.

Looking on from my rooms doorway, as a small child screaming to stop fighting with every fiber of my being and begging for my dad to calm down as my mom antagonized him further and further, mocking him as he lost control of himself in bloodlust.

Everyone eventually leaves him (Magnus, Nicki, Gabrielle) so when he states that Claudia won't come back its bc people in his life usually don't. He doesn't want to have any hopes to be destroyed.
Lestat was depressed too in those seven years, that's why he left the house in such shape. He lost both Claudia and Louis, who blames him for her absence and doesn't pay Lestat any mind.
When Louis is waiting for Claudia to come back on the balcony, we see Lestat on the ground below, looking at the street. He seems to be waiting for her as well... Lestat can't forget her, no matter what he claims.

And yes the actual cloud scene was one of those sweet sweet moments, you hardly ever got to see/read in the books and the loving bickering was L&L in a nutshell - so what a shock, having one of the few really romantic and humorous scenes of the book turned into a brutal nightmare, and an narcistic abuser abusing his lover.
I said somewhere before, Lestat is a lot, but I never thought him as a narcisist. Louis for me always stood for depression and dealing with depression. An interesting tidbit regarding Armand. I was wondering why they would be so secretive about which actor will play Armand -- the only way I can see that being a "spoiler" is if we've already seen the actor but didn't know he was meant to be Armand. Then I remembered Episode 4, when Daniel walks in on Rashid's prayer. When Rashid says "asr namozi" Daniel perks up and says something along the lines of "That's not Arabic -- what is it, Crimean?" Well, it's Uzbek, which has a strong link to the Crimean Tartars. All of that history took place in the area where Armand was born -- and in the books, he was kidnapped from Kiev by Tartars. You can tell they placed that detail in there for a reason, that conversation isn't just for fun, so I'm wondering if we'll get a real surprise at the end of the season regarding Rashid and Armand. The way he's always wearing gloves and placed just outside direct sunlight, his completely different reaction to being fed from (as you already pointed out.) There's definitely something lurking below the surface with him, and with all the changes they've made, anything is possible. Really looking forward to seeing the reveal of this mystery!

Great review, as always. I can really find engaging MCs that are far more dark than light - Tommy Shelby (Peaky Blinders), Tony Soprano, so if the show is aiming to make Lestat a real anti-hero, as opposed to a lovable rogue, I could do that - even if it's a significant departure from the books. That said, I had hoped for End Game Loustat (I actually had been hoping that Lestat lived in Dubai, too, and we'd have a "hi, honey, I'm home" moment for the season finale). But I don't see how we can get to that from here, even after making significant allowances for it being "Claudia's POV."
I don't know why the writers went there, other than to make the case for why Lestat's murder was necessary/reasonable/justified - but to do so at the risk of destroying Lestat's character or the romantic arc? They could've had Claudia kill him in a still-mad state and just have Louis ineffectual and complicit. Crazily enough, my biggest fear going into this episode was that it would be *Louis's* character that would be destroyed because I thought that if he stood by and let Lestat be murdered, despite their long romance and relationship, he would come across as more a bastard than even Claudia.
But then we got... this. I'm trying to trust in the writers' vision. But episode 6 has a mighty heavy lift!

He’s a complicated character we sometimes love to hate but always love, even while wicked he’s always incredibly entertaining and complex! This version of Lestat has no humour or vibrancy, he’s attractive but boring and his abuse in basic. If they want new audiences to fall in love with Lestat enough to continue the series they’re going about it the wrong way! The only way to fix it is that Claudia’s POV is completely disproven.

39:39 What Maven says here is not a completely accurate picture. In the IWTV novel, Lestat and Louis did have at least one knockdown brawl AND it was in relation to Claudia. The fight is not described in great detail in the book, which is perhaps why the fandom is overlooking it, but it did happen.
In the chapter where Louis first stumbles upon Claudia in the room with her dead mother and Lestat catches him in the act of feeding on Claudia, they end up fighting back at the hotel. Here's an except:
"...I was utterly out of my mind. I went round and round the room looking for some way to kill him....Reason had altogether left me, so that I was consummate rage, and when he came through the broken glass, we fought as we'd never fought before...It was hell that stopped me...I lost my confidence, my purpose, my grip. I was down on the floor then, and he was standing over me, his eyes cold, though his chest heaved. "You're a fool, Louis" he said...The fight had got the better of him in some way; or something had."
Therefore, we can infer that there was more than just hysteria-cancelling slaps between them. Additionally, there's a mention of a second physical altercation in a scene where Lestat goes to slap Claudia. Again, no great details provided.
"When he spoke, often she didn't answer him....And our fragile domestic tranquility erupted with his outrage. He did not have to be loved, but he would not be ignored; and once he even flew at her, shouting that he would slap her, and I found myself in the wretched position of fighting him as I'd done years before she'd come to us."
This reads like a sadly common scenario with dysfunctional families. One parent wants to physically discipline the kid, the other parent tries to stop it, and then the parents come to blows over this disagreement.
Nevertheless, I agree the show did turn up the level of violence as compared to the books. I also agree that the fight was more one-sided and Lestat's actions came across as assault. Though to paint a fuller picture and give the show some credit, throughout the entire fight scene in episode 5, Lestat was pleading with Louis to stop fighting him and that he didn't want to hurt Louis. I really only caught this in the subtitles on my 2nd time watching the episode.
Pardon the spelling/grammatical mistakes. It's way too late at night for me to be writing out such long comments. :]
    Cheers.

And there's nothing stopping a vampire from eating pineapple and honey -- in this show they can eat food, it just doesn't taste good. Maybe they are doing the What We Do In The Shadows thing where vamps can get drunk or high off of drug blood. 🤣☠️

My question is who is Lestat talking to in the preview of episode 6? He says something like, “Claudia is poisoning Louis against me.” Could it be that we get to hear HIS side of the story???😳😱🤯

The line was edited for the trailer. The actual line in the episode is “She is poisoning you against me.” We heard it already in a previous trailer. The editor probably thought it wasn’t clear who he was talking about so spliced in a clip from a different line of him saying Louis’s name just for the sake of clarity. He’s just talking to Louis.

OR if It was the FIRST version of the line that was edited in the previous trailer, and THIS is actually the right one, the only other person he could be talking to is Antoinette, and we know she’s in the next two episodes.
ETA: aha! I was right on the second guess! It seems weird that the first trailer changed it to "you" instead of his name. But trailers are weird sometimes🤷

"Because of course he does; he's Louis"
All you need to know about Jacob Anderson as Louis.

I wonder why nobody noticed the smell of dead ppl with the incinerator thing.. since it should smell, and it's noticeable the hard odor....
