If Deana really likes to live near the water, you should‘ve checked out the western part of Leipzig (Plagwitz/Schleussig/Lindenau). The Clara-Zetkin-Park and the Auwald are very close too. So, you would combine the best of both worlds there - the greenish parks and the water but also great industrial buildings with nice lofts and apartments.
Did you know, that Leipzig ranks after Hamburg and Berlin as the city with the most bridges in Germany. It has actually more than Venedig - even though the ones in Venedig are a bit more beautiful 😜
The lakes south of Leipzig are great too... Especially in summer.
Compared with other German cities the rents in Leipzig are super cheap. The city is kinda „hip“ with loads and loaaads of students. It is also quite compressed and not so copious like Berlin for example. You can go everywhere by bike but the Tram system is really great as well. The city is currently booming. Most of the empty places you‘ve seen around the city centre (west of the main station, south of the new town hall, Bayerischer Bahnhof) are gonna be new living space/parks in not even 10 years.
With around 600.000 people living in Leipzig it’s not too big but not too small either. If you need more shops or whatever, Berlin is 2 hours away, Dresden 1, Fankfurt around 3 hours by train.
The city is soo energetic but if you want it can be super classic as well (the old trade fair arcades, ...).
All in all a great city (at least for me 😜)

Deana and Phil - I watched this video tonight (i'm in US). I LOVE Leipzig. Just so you know, The Nikolaikirche was a favorite venue of J, S. Bach, the Cantor at the Thomas Church until his death in 1750. Also, the city you saw was not there when I visited in 1993. The Leipzig citizens have worked hard to restore what was a dilapidated and run down city. Bums and gypsies were in the square in front of the Gewandhausin 1993. I consider Germany my home-land, even as a proud American. Thank you for taking me back to the places I have visited each time I go!! Vielen Dank, meine Freunden!!

Beautiful city, I want to go back. Looks like you missed the Thomaskirche. It also has a big place in history, it is the home of the Thomanerchor, one of the oldest boy choirs in the world at over 800 years, and which was for over 25 years conducted by JS Bach himself, who composed most of his choral work for this choir. And also the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Both institutions super high on the prestige scale.

I visited on wednesday last week for the first time the city of Leipzig. And I was amazed. You don't often find the mixture of small-town-feeling in a major city. The public parks near the central city and the many interesting museums I found were amazing, too. And then the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. One of the biggest memorials in Europe.
The City of Leipzig is, as far as I know the east german bigger Cities (Dresden, Halle, Magdeburg, Potsdam, Erfurt, Berlin), my favourite right now. Many young people, all friendly, musicians in the pedestrian zone, many Cafes and Restaurants.
Do you have a favourite right now?

You just visited my favorite city in Germany. I live in NRW since my birth, but I visit Leipzig on a regular term for 20 years now. There is something called WGT (Wave-Gotik-Treffen) which normally takes place there (this year it was cancelled because of the virus) and which is the reason why I go there once a year. I fell in love with the city, its people and the whole atmosphere there. It breathes history not only because of the GDR but also because of the many artists and writers who lived there. Ancient and modern bulidings come together for a unique melange you won't find anywhere else.
When it comes to the Völkerschlachtdenkmal I recommend to also visit the Krypta next time which is a room in the basement. It actually looks like something from Lord of the Rings with its impressive architecture and huge statues and figurines.
And there is much more to explore there. Leipzig has an area with several lakes where you can swim or ride a boat or cycle or go for a walk around them and I absolutely love the variety of restaurants and bars all over the city.
We miss our Leipzig since we couldn't go there this year and look so much forward to it in 2021. The WGT is one thing, but we actually miss the city more than the festival, I swear... and that's what I say after experiencing both for 20 years.

It's not so big like Hamburg, Hannover or Leipzig,, but big enough to have everything man can have in a big city. It's a city with all advantages of one industrial urban area, but with a lot of green areas, very nice and quiet and fantastic history. It is actually one of the oldest and most influentual cities in the whole Germany. It is also the city with most percentage young people in the whole Germany. I think Leipzig is really great place to live :D very close to lakes with nice water, plenty of great parks that you can barbeque and it is clean, not in all germany you can do it. Really nice parts of city for food, and party, plagwitz and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, eisenbahnstr for food and other things, when you need it :) More for alternativ people connewitz. I think is safe and communication is great. You have sban that connected everything and with a bike is also like everywhere 30 min. Most important the apartments are crazy cheap compare to other cities. You maybe earn a little less compare to berlin or west, but city is great place to live.

There are so many beautiful towns in Eastern Germany. My personal favorites are Weimar and Erfurt and - like someone in the comments already said - the historic towns along the Baltic coast: Greifswald, Stralsund, Rostock, Wismar, and Luebeck (which is in former West Germany right at the former border between East and West). These are smaller towns, but some of them are quite lively, thanks to universities and/or tourism. Whenever I am in Thuringia, I pick dishes that come with Thuringian potato dumplings (thüringische Klöße). Love them.
