Meta Quest 3: 5 Months Later Still Has WORSE Tracking Than Quest 2
Vložit

- Quest 3's launch day along with many others has and continues to have tracking problems. Having used and owned other headsets like Oculus Rift S and Quest 2 comparatively this headset is worse. Meta has rolled out updates and fixes to fix said tracking issues. With updates very slightly improving the tracking, this issue still plagues on.
In an hour, the next day, or in due time with the release of this video Meta can completely fix the issue. However, as of right now, that isn't true, and my Quest 2 is primarily used as my main headset for apps and games like Beat Saber, Smash Drums, Les Mills Body Combat, and Supernatural that target fitness.
At the end of it all tracking rings aren't so bad after all.

I'm reading through the comments and it seems like a lot of people disagree, so I just want to give my opinion on the matter. I'm around rank #3000 on beatleader and can beat all levels on all difficulties in the base game, so I feel knowledgeable enough to make some comment on the quality of the tracking. I've owned and used both headsets for at least a few hundred hours.
First off, for 95% of applications, Q3 controllers are better than Q2 controllers, they weigh less, and generally feel more sturdy and compact. The Q2 also seems to have all sorts of issues with it's haptics, which can feel like something is loose and buzzing in the controller.
However, in the case of high-level beatsaber, it's not close, the Q3 has less accurate tracking than the Q2 when making quick hand movements, and I can't really be convinced otherwise.
Since Meta got rid of the tracking rings (which was a good decision overall IMO), the Q3 is reliant on some sort of AI module for the tracking, in which it predicts movements, but unfortunately when you're doing 10+nps, your movements just aren't really predictable. I would say Q3 tracking is perfectly fine for 99% of players, and it wont even be an issue in most Ex+ clears even, but if you're going for the top 100 leaderboard spots on a song, it starts being an issue.
The Q3 is also more susceptible to variations in environment, the Q2 can be played in a mostly dark room and still track fine. On Q3 tracking goes out the window.
I don't believe SixTaco's controllers are defective, it's just that at higher levels of play, you begin to notice these things (judging by his scores, he seems a bit better than me, so tracking inaccuracies that do exist would become even more frustrating). If you can pass expert levels just fine, great, that's still impressive! but your should also recognize that it's still pretty far off from more competitive play.
In my experience the Quest 3 controllers have better tracking than Quest 2.
Not only that, but they are more comfortable and the buttons/rumble is better.
I have had every headset upto the 3 including the pro. After almost 4 months with the Quest 3 I already sold my Pro and Quest 2. Not going back. Q3 has great tracking. Also, Meta is updating and making their software a lot better quite frequently.
This is stupid, how is it possible that the quest 3 controllers are better? The buttons and whatever you call Rumble is pretty much the same hahaha 😆
@@AliXaltedbecause he's a idiot who think is experience with the headset os a reference and because it works for him.the 180 000 complaint on the support site are not founded..dude stop giving rhese idiot importance..they don't know shit and are the first one to cry on the forum that we are rude when they finally have a problem....idiots
yes, the controllers are more comfortable but the tracking is terrible, especially with fast movements
@@EmperorBaconBoi the headset has blind spots, if you have your controllers in those spots they start moving randomly even in perfect lighting. Meta put 0% effort using or play testing with the headset.
WE NEED AN UPDATE, the tracking seems to “over calculate” when moving very fast with quest 3 controllers it’s horrible.
Do you happen to have larger hands, it feels like your IR emitters are being obscured by something. might also be worth checking whether all the lights are functional using an IR camera (you could use Q2 passthrough to look at Q3 controllers when they're on and make sure they all light up.)
That jitter in Onward looks pretty unplayable.
I would say my hands are barely slightly above average. Ever since Rift S I grown accustomed to not blocking the tracking for the most optimal tracking. I did peep using Q2 camera to check on my Q3 controllers and they do light up fine.
Sorry, but I can't agree with you. I play many games like beatsaber (expert mode), synth riders, Les Mills Body Combat and never have any issues with the controllers. There is no game of which I can say that the Quest 3 controllers are worse than those of the Quest 2.
I dont have problems either. I am wondering if there are faulty headsets out there,
Your controllers are on crack then bc when I’m on Gtag they go out a bunch
Yeah, not my experience at all. I’m with him. Sometimes I don’t feel the feedback. Twice or three times per song.
It’s faster, it’s more “there”, but there’s just something about the tracking on the 3 that I’m not sure about. It’s still ok though.
You guys are the lucky ones. I literally had to buy the quest pro remotes to fix my solution. I’m climbing games such as population one. I my controller would lose tracking unless I was staring at my hands.
The controllers are great but I find if you go too high up or away from your headset to the sides of you it does harm the tracking but everything in front of you is perfect.
The second I hold my Quest 3 controllers at height of my nose and 75 cm from my body, it's gone. The most infuriating part is that it takes too long for the tracking to restore once the cameras can see my controller again. I had multiple Beat Saber sessions ruined because of this. I wanted to break my headset with my knee every time it happens. It also seems to be worse for the right controller. I don't have very large hands, and I actively slide my hands down the controller as to not obscure the IR lights.
Does it still happen if you use the quest 2 controllers with the quest 3
dont think quest 3 supports quest 2 controllers but it does support the quest pro controllers :/
I haven't had many tracking issues since I switched to the quest 3. More importantly, I haven't had any tracking issues flat out. Sure I could put the controllers behind my back and see them float into space but that's expected. The tracking is generally way better than the quest 2. I still had mine laying around and did some switcheroo from quest 3 to 2 and playing some levels on beatsaber I can confirm this. On the quest 2 the tracking doesnt feel as good as the quest 3 (also the haptics sucked). But every time it just felt bad going back to using those quest 2 controllers. Meta did well with the q3
just let us use the quest 2 controllers on quest 3 😢
literal you problem, better use the touch pro controllers
have you seen them prices?????????@@KUIJEN8659
I was thinking of going Quest 3 over my Quest 2 for fitness. This video helps with my fomo on that. Think I will hold off for now. Thank you. 🤘
The quest 3 is generally better for fitness because its way more balanced and (unlike this video says) has more accurate tracking for controllers. They dont just drift up into heaven or randomly dont show up anymore
Get the Quest 3 idk what this video is talking about
sincere advice - if you can afford it, buy the Quest 3. You won't regret it.
Quest 2 is still a great headset, and value wise Quest 2 beats Quest 3 all day. For fitness games that utilize punching up at eye level or above are kind of awkward when you end up missing.
@@sixtacos Awesome. The only thing I do use my Quest 2 for is for the boxing in FitXR. Or other fitness apps. A year ago, either the because of the game or the system software, the hit detection was janky. Now it’s so accurate and good, I actually find myself caring about score. When you’re doing an hour workout and throwing 5334 punches for that workout, you do start to care when you miss once or twice. 😂
IMO the Quest 3 hand tracking is AMAZING
used to have a Rift S and it had way worse tracking.
Although I do agree the Rift S Tracking was better for BeatSaber, because for some reason I kept missing blocks when I hit them square on with my sabers on quest 3
Hand tracking from the early days of Q2 to Q3 is night and day.
That's what I mean if your a Rift S user and using Quest 3 missing blocks I should have obviously hit is annoying. Rift S tracking isn't perfect, but it works. Q3 for some reason comes up short.
Having the same issue i havent been able to play beatsaber without getting angery.
Whats also anoying is the vibaration when cutting though blocks can be non existens or off
I’m thinking about getting the Pro Controllers, as the stock Quest 3 controllers annoy me so much while playing VRChat, as my hands always drift away or move in ways which the controllers aren’t. My quest 2 controllers tracking was perfect compared to these.
im here because my quest 3 , the right controller seems to wobble , when i calibrate it it seems really hard to make the big circles. I get some unwanted movement in browsers it seems to scroll sometimes just looking down when i dont want it to
Quest Pro controllers also still have significant issues, as well
Like what?
@@tookool5616 fast movements break tracking
I owned the Quest Pro as well, (although I did sell it, the Q3 is way better) I even tried the controllers on my Q3 to see if the tracking would be better and their was no noticeable difference for me personally.@@tookool5616
@@tookool5616 A few things I have dealt with in the last few months: Tracking loss with slow recovery. Overheat warnings, even while idling on desktop. Loss of tracking that won't restore until a controller reboot (this went on for months). Frequent tracking : hand placement offset. Poor RMA replacement quality control (the controller I was given had worse stick drift than the one I sent them.) Poor firmware quality control that is still bricking controllers. Untested firmware being set as the new default, not allowing roll-backs to provenly stable versions. No, I don't need troubleshooting tips. Yes, I tried this, that, and those.
can you use quest 2 controller with quest 3?
No. You could theoretically do it. Meta just needs to retrain the algorithms as the camera system is entirely different. Don't see them going through all that hassle for a minority of Beat Saber players.
Quest 2 sometimes lose tracking when my hand go out of range and in range for me on beat saber hard/expert.. never happened on quest 3
Bruh... i have no issues with my tracking. Unpair your controllers, remove the batteries for a minuite, put them back in, then repair the controllers
Yep, did just that. I unpaired controllers many times, took off the batteries and put them back in. I also restarted my headset, did two factory resets, joined Quest PTC twice and left it twice, bought new lightbulbs and made sure they were 60hz specifically, tried both 50hz and 60hz in the Quest settings for controller tracking multiple times, used both dim and bright settings, switched rooms, etc.
Tracking is good for most people. However, I would say when playing games like Beat Saber natively at Expert+ any perceivable latency and tracking issues get exaggerated.
I bet u work for meta
Then I'm really happy that I don't have any problems with my Quest 3 controllers.
Same
What type of games to you play, and are you PCVR or standalone? Curious.
Thanks for the heads up. I’m stuck cause I need pid 70.2. I wonder shall I just go with pico 4. I only want to use with pc games and don’t care about meta games.
I did see posts near Quest 3's launch of users saying that if you had an IPD of 70,71 or 72 the headset was crystal clear. I use an IPD of 63-64 can't speak for experience. But, since your main use case of the headset is PCVR. In the video, I focus on native Quest 3 tracking. For fitness games like Beat Saber Q3 is a sidestep. For fast repetitive movements, Q2 is less prone to drift.
Don't think my problems should not affect you as much since your use case is PCVR and not standalone. The benefit with Q3 is that Meta's business is on the line and updates should be rolling in. With Pico 4 I did see that they have been updating and improving tracking. Some people in my videos said that Pico 4 had better tracking. But, I'm in the States so who knows.
@@sixtacos Got one and happy. What cable to use for pcvr. Wireless im getting 866 mbps transmit/receive. There one that can also charge? i saw prismxr out of stock. Or best wireless amd charge with nitecore brick?
For fast paced games, I agree. But the body tracking for Virtual Desktop and VRChat has been great. I'm pretty happy with my quest 3. Beat saber and gtag aside.
I'll prob give that a try. I always have both and hand tracking off due to it somehow conflicting with tracking.
They should just let us pair our Quest 2 controllers to the Quest 3..
That's why the sell the quest pro controllers separately. Upselling is everywhere.
Yeah, in the Meta Connect Keynote 2023, after finishing talking about the Touch plus controllers they tried to upsell the pro controllers. Tech wise they are amazing, but $300 is $300. I'll save up for QPro2 instead.
Hmm, I never noticed an issue - then again I don't play Beat Saber on the Quest 3.
It does plague Beat Saber players more than other games. I made a post on the Saber Beater Reddit and got plenty of comments calling me crazy. Then over time the post still gets new comments and upvotes that they have the same issue as me.
Not even a little bit.
You need to consider the possibility that you're the problem here. Read through the comments, and consider your lighting, your accessories, or your methods. It isn't the device.
But if issues exist on quest 3, that aren't on quest 2, then is the consumer really the problem here?
in my experience way better tracking and better feedback
I haven't had any tracking issues with quest 3
because you dont play shooters :b
u wanna trade headsets for a day :)
4:45 POV: You play Power of The Saber Blade on X+
lmao
fair but like you said, for most people this is probably never going to be noticeable, even if they are playing these same games. its like talking about a 120hz vz 240hz monitor. that bump in refresh rate may, technically, help. someone playing a few rounds with friends after work is not going to care or notice. The Quest 3 is sharper and has a lot of user improvements that make it better than the Quest 2, however, at $200 the Quest 2 is probably the best bang for your buck you can get. IF you can bump your budget up to $500 though, the Quest 2 is just better. It should probably be compared to the Vive series more at that point
I think that's a fair comparison. Naturally, when you play Beat Saber or any VR rhythm at higher levels. Any perception of latency gets exaggerated. The controllers kind of become a natural extension of your hands, and to what might seem very subtle to a lot a users is very annoying to me. As a simple cut is the difference between 20th or 50th place. Value wise Quest 3 I don't think will ever trump over Quest 2.
@sixtacos that is also fare. The Quest 3 is better, but is it, by cost, 2.5x better? No, probably not.
everything u said, i go through...even the "some days it tracks better than other days"
I agree the quest 3 controllers are worse then quest 2. Good video honest :)
In specific cases like mine yes
@@sixtacos these comments on this channel is super weird, they seem not realize that the halo ring was there for a reason 😂. Second check out sadlyitsbradly he'll say the same thing.
hi all i play first person tennis, I lost always 30% of balls due to bad tracking, if meta can allow the use of the meta quest 2 controllers...but they do not allow ...
Meta could opt-in to allow the use of Q2 controllers on Q3, but they would have to retrain their tracking algorithms as the cameras are completely different. I don't think Meta cares too much about fixing the issue for a niche group of players and no VR blog posts or experiences the same issues we get.
It's an issue that comes with the removal of the tracking rings. It might be a first-generation issue, but we always have the Quest Pro controllers I guess. Along with Beat Saber getting a reduction in tracking accuracy people that play tennis VR games are the next front runner for this kind of issue.
@@sixtacos They don't seem to care until we are a relatively small group of players (in sports games like tennis, etc.). I know they will not implement any new programming specifically for this niche group. Anyway, I have become quite disillusioned because I use sports tennis games extensively...and with the Meta Quest 2 headset, the visuals are not very clear for me. I want to try using the pro controller, but those cost 300 euros or more, which is not an insignificant amount. I have already purchased the Etzi extension accessory.
I agree that with the next generation of hardware, these issues will likely be addressed, but for now we can only wait patiently. Despite the visual handicap of around 30% compared to ideal, I am still playing tennis games and am ranked among the top 10 players. There's nothing more I can do about it currently.
In summary, you feel frustrated by the current visual limitations for your favorite tennis games on the Quest 2, but remain hopeful the situation will improve with future hardware iterations, despite the costly pro controller accessories available now.
I don't agree with you...and I have both... 3 is much better...I would not go back to 2
Are you crazy? Quest 3 PCVR is NOWHERE near to be used with beat saber. The lag created by the video signal being compressed over to the headset make beat saber literal unplayable. Play it native on the quest 3 and your scores are the same. I hope you are not a professional tech channel because guuuurl, thats embarrasing
Latency of course is always present, but depending on your setup you can improve the experience.
I have two Wi-Fi 6 routers one exclusively for Airlink and the other one for internet. I can run Beat Saber at 120fps just fine, and going into OculusDebug settings turn off ASW. I also play the music through speakers connected to my PC to mitigate audio latency.
Sure, competitive play is horrible. But, I can finish maps like Power of the Saber Blade on Expert+ just fine. I'm sure that is the hardest song of any OST or DLC pack. 11 notes per second I'm sure.
I would compare it to going from 165hz to 60hz. At first, it sucks. But, over time your brain just gets used to it.
i think ur quest 3 controllers are defective
Absolutely do not agree with you - Quest 3 is superior in tracking to Quest 2 without a doubt, no idea what youre talking about.
It must be just you. The tracking on my set has been fantastic.
Question, do you play saber beater?
Clickbait bs i have all 3 quests and 3 has zero issues tracking that the other two dont also have like behind your head obviously tf you talking about😂
Did you watch the video
It's isn't about tracking being bad on quest 3 he's just saying that it is slightly worse for certain things on the quest 3 compared to the quest 2. This is all his experience and for his use cases. He had to put a beat saber clip in expert mode in slowmo to even notice the issue and that just isn't accuracy most people need for vr games. Just because somebody has a different experience to you doesn't mean it's clickbate. Get over yourself
