  • WE KNOW YOUR WAY IS BETTER (but feel free to comment anyhow). That being said, this is how we do it when we're getting paid to do it. James makes this look a lot easier than it is for most people because he's done it hundreds of times.
Remember to take your time and think ahead through things. Most people find it helpful to just start with something no matter whether you're certain it's "correct" or not. Having the visual to then adjust and perfect is usually what will get you over the hump with outrigger rigging!
This set up is a "Carolina Style" rigging system meant to fish 40-60lb tackle being trolled for most pelagic "meat fish" and smaller billfish. We eliminate stopper balls, swivels and excess crimps to keep everything simple and efficient, and we ONLY use Blacks RC-99 clips.
A few more key things you might notice in this video:
    Release Clips
You can spend more and get less if and when you don't need the extra strength or friction reduction for heavier, stiffer line being fished at higher drags. These clips may appear "cheap," but the Blacks RC99 are absolutely outstanding at fishing 3-11lbs of release pressure, especially over a few seasons of use, versus other clips. What 4-10lbs of release pressure translates to is slightly less than your reels' strike drag settings, so we are talking about a spread being fished at about 6-15lbs of drag off your rod tips. We have found there's a significant difference in performance and durability with knockoff brands that look similar but simply aren't the same as American-made Blacks clips (North Carolina company, btw). By performance, we mainly care about their ability to hold a tension setting, i.e.: what their release settings are set at. You can scale these clips yourself and note their consistency, which is invaluable to have the spread set correctly and pressure applied on the fish during a strike as you intend when it counts the most. We drill the holes in these clips out to 3/16" diameter so that they have more freedom to spin and self adjust on the halyard lines rather than getting hung and causing problems or undue chafe or other malfunctioning in the system. Blacks sells the clips with the larger holes in their kite release clip kits, but we purchase the RC-99's in bulk and simply modify them to suit this need with our 2.0mm 400lb monofilament and AFW 2.44mm HD stubby crimps. That's right, I did say 2.44mm crimps for 2.0mm line. Just trust us. We don't want your lines popping or weaker than they should be anymore than you do. Almost every broken outrigger halyard is attributable to the crimps used and the crimp job (usually the crimper, literally).
    Hal-Lock pulley modification
Another detail is the elimination of the bungee on the Hal-Lock pulley cluster and replacement with a high quality double-braided static line to maintain constant pressure on the halyards so that releases are more consistent once everything is set up - despite sea state, speed or bait size or shape, etc.
    Titanium Teaser Guide Ring
Lastly, we add a machined titanium guide ring in this video for the customer to easily run a squid chain surface teaser with "full range of motion off a halyard" to create additional versatility and attraction to his trolling spread. The main reason for the halyards attaching to the gunnel on this particular boat is for the teaser to run back and forth below and inside of the long and medium halyards which would carry the short and long rigger baits in that particular setup and not be affected by the teaser line's operation beneath and "ahead" of them. We recommend attaching halyards to the cleat or similar at first until you fish and are certain of running in a combined triple pulley system like this or split or alternatively positioned, etc. before drilling for a thru-gunnel fairlead and tensioner. It's much easier to start out with a baseline system that will work well like what we've done here before fine tuning and making modifications to the boat.
We've never taken the time to show this system in much detail because, like I said, we know your way is better. However, hopefully this helps a lot of people understand our own approach to what 4 of 5 people are probably asking of their outriggers on a center console boat offshore when trolling.
