  • I have always wanted to get myself a Peugeot 305, my Grandpa had one when i was a child and drove it for well over 10 years, i can also remember there being a number of vans on the farm.
    After some watching out on ebay this one turned up and i bought it.
    The car came from near manchester, and i drove it back home to Northern Ireland via the ferry in Holyhead across to Dublin, 250 miles covered without any breakdowns which isn't bad for a car which hasn't been used much in recent years.
    Currently it has a 1.6 8v TU5S engine with a webber carburettor, it has a Citroen Saxo VTS radiator installed with cable ties as the original radiator was badly clogged up. The engine has a webber carburettor fitted, and it seems to be running reasonably well (there are 59,000 miles on the clock) but it does seem to have a bit of top end clatter which could be due to a worn camshaft. The engine isn't as smooth as it should be and slightly down on power.
    Replacing the camshaft and checking the shims is an option however i have also got hold of a 1990 Van with the XUD diesel engine, so that will be going into the estate some time soon.
    The car for a 29 year old 305 is in remarkable condition, there is rust but it is restorable, the plan is to strip the whole car down, weld whatever needs to be welded, and give it a respray and decent underbody protection, stone chip shield waxoyl etc (I'm not too sure yet on what is the best stuff to put on but i will find out soon)
    The interior of the car is immaculate, the seats are typical old Peugeot, bar an old Citroen these are the softest seats i have sat in, which makes the car very comfortable, all of the electrical things inside work (although it does have the wobbly speedometer needle i remember back in the day), the car has manual locking all round, manual windows, manual mirrors, no seat belts in the rear its basic by the standards of todays cars. But it does have loads of character, and it handles surprisingly well for such an old car, although the suspension is creaky and rattly and in need of a refurbish.
    At the moment the car has a years MOT and 6 Months tax, i have drove it about a bit, but the tailgate has a leak so i am keeping it stored in my garage out of the rain, it can be welded up, the rear doors are rusty at the bottom and hopefully they can be repaired. The front passenger wing is rusty as is the front valence, and it would be great if i could find replacement parts. If anyone knows about 305 spare parts let me know in the comments.

    My first car was a 1985 Peugeot 305 estate 1.7 GLD. I inherited it in 95 from my father and he had bought it from my grandfather before that. Thanks for sharing this, brought back some great memories.

    Both sets of my grandparents each had one of these. One had a blue 1.6 petrol which eventually became my first car, and the others had a maroon 1.8 diesel version. The 305 was a Brilliant workhorse for it’s time! Probably the best to drive in it’s class too.

    Thanks for the great memories. My dad had two 305 like this one when I was a kid. The first one was white and had a 1.9L diesel engine with 65hp and the second one was red (like yours) and had a 1.5L petrol engine with 89hp. We lived in Madagascar and we had a lot of fantastic road trips through the island with those cars. They were truly reliable.

      Hi Glad to hear you like it, its one thing i like about the 305 is hearing other peoples stories about when they or a family member owned one, over here in ireland a lot of people especially farmers had the 305 Van and it usually starts conversations remembering them, and of course talking about the reliability especially the diesels.
      Madagascar, very nice. What is it like on old cars? Do you have any problems with corrosion, (here the salted roads in the winter rust cars badly) are there many 305's left on your roads.

      Thanks, yes thats one thing i like about the 305 on the classic car scene its a bit of an oddity, here old MG's and Ford escorts are quite prevelant. The 305 i find more interesting, having said that i enjoy seeing other once common mainstream old cars that have now become rare, always find there is more memories from their owners to talk about.
      Madagasgar sounds great then for the old cars, if there was another peugeot i would love to try it would be the 505 just seems like such a great strong big car, although even the hilux/landcruiser are special for their durability, a lot of them got exported years ago.
      Yup we have an influx of german motors nowadays, i prefer the older cars, much more character and easier to fix.
      As for a 305 review, i do plan to get a good roadtrip in one once it has an XUD under the bonnet, this S5 is currently a shell awaiting sandblasting so once its back together i will try to do a good video of it.

      Thanks for the comment, there is a definite character about these old 305s, and indeed very comfortable the seats for a start are a lot softer than that found on new cars, and the suspension does a very good job of ironing out bumps on the road.

    Great video. I love the cars from the 80th. maybe because i made my driving license in 1984. The cars were different, a VW dont looked like an Audi or a Renault. I still have a VW Passat Fastback from 1986 and it was a d is the best car i ever had.

    I've had my 305 van for 17 years now. Xantia turbo engine. Going for a 2 inch lift and 2 inch offset steelies. Got pepper pots at moment. Love it. Won't sell it. Howmanyleft says only 2 grd's on the road and I know the other one.

      Xantia XUD turbo or the petrol turbo CT engine?
      How are you planning the lift, have you sourced new springs/shocks or will it be using spacer blocks above the axles?
      Are you on Facebook the 305 uk and ireland owners club is worth joining

      I've had a rear axle reconditioned, also new springs and shocks and , yep, spacer blocks. Front, longer springs and shocks. Rear axle is going on this weekend. Going to look a bit odd for a week until the front is done. Then source some nice steelies to off set an inch. Then I hope it will look a bit cooler than your average wagon. Green lanes are calling. I have a feeling I know of you PugCit2CV. Not many 305 owners about.

      Thanks, its not too bad especially compared to other ones i had looked at. Its not immaculate but as a basis for something to restore its a good start, the bottoms of both rear doors will need welding up, and the bootlid has a rust hole which is causing a leak. Its got bits of rust but it can be fixed.

  • @dannyjaar
    @dannyjaar Před 4 lety

    rust was a item in those days the newer models dont rust at all and where realy reliable my 206 have 8 k on his clock on gasoline and drive fine

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Před 4 lety

      It depeneded very much on usage. Over here the vans were literally driven into the ground, the diesel offered a very mechanically robust package capable of massive mileages but lack of bodywork care and use in salty roads led to thier demise.
      The 206s are good wee car, ive bought and sold a few. Rust seems to be affecting the very earliest models now but forgivable as they age, back axles are their only main issue but a replacement axle is not expensive.

      I know because it was me driving the car that it had been driven for a good 20 minuites before this video was taken, it was stored at a different location to where the video was made, the drive had ensured the engine was warmed up.
      You can hear around 6:25 - 6:40 it splutters at idle, the carburettor did not idle right there was always a bit of a running problem where it tended to cut out at junctions unless giving it some revs.
      The engine when i got it already had signs of camshaft wear so it was a bit clattery although it still did drive 400 miles from england back to northern Ireland.

    Hi, I own a Peugeot 305 GL 1983 and the horn slowly stopped working. You seem to know your way around and oldtimer...any advice on how to fix it or at least where to find the info? been struggling for a while so thank you for your help :)
    P.S: Your car is awesome, nice job with it :)

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Před 4 lety

      The horn will be located around the front of the car somewhere, id need to actually check my own to see where it is. Although google car horn to get an idea of what it looks like.
      They are generally not serviceable although a simple thing to wire in, the best thing would be to get a horn from a newer peugeot or any car in fact (they all run on 12v).
      Now that is assuming the horn is faulty. If you have the old horn unbolted its possible then to provide it with 12v from a battery to see if it works. If it works that way there may be a problem with a relay or the switch and further looking into the problem will be required.
