Shortening RC Servo Wires

  • In this video I show how I shorten servo wires. This can also be done to ESC wires. I'm using a HobbyKing JST-SH Connector Crimping Tool which works very well. The connectors I use are easily found on eBay and sold as JR/Futaba connectors. Sorry for the sometime blurry video, I just wanted to get as close up as possible so you can see what I'm doing. Enjoy!

    Nice tool, cutting and removing the isolation was never an issue. But reconnecting or rebuilding the plug that's when despair hits you. Thanks for showing the solution👍

    Thanks for the tool tutorial. Many years ago I purchased pins and housings for servos in order to make them longer/shorter. But it did not come with this tool and so my attempts did not make quality connectors. I did not know about this crimping tool until watching your video. So now I will order a tool and revisit making servo connectors again. 🙂

      Glad it was helpful for you. I do feel your pain, I used to crimp them using pointed pliers. Not very good at all. This tool has made it a lot better. 👍

    I guess this is something that racers will do. Bashers don’t need to do this. They just zip tie the excess cable up because they know the servo or esc will move to another vehicle one day. Now that I’ve stopped racing I actually use servo extension cables because I have receiver in the front and esc in the back. Great video. Great explanation!

      @@RCHobbyShed - Yeah, I need to change out the prop shaft and the steering horn/saver along with the bellcrank, the most underengineered parts on the whole car, IMO. After that it's a set of tarmac tires and then maybe I'll get it out for a shakedown run.

    When I was crimping full size car looms, I found that a proper crimp was stronger than the wire itself, and wire would break, but crimp held.

    Thanks for this! I have a set of very similar crimping pliers and this shed a lot of light on how to use them the easiest way. I have a couple of servos that I need to extend, and one that I need to shorten, but for that I'll be using non-insulated crimps and heat shrink tube. I do however have a couple of RC4WD trucks that I'm building lighting harnesses for, and I'll need to cut, shorten, extend, and re-pin some wires. That's what these pliers are for. So again, thank you!

    I have seen you do the wire shortening in many videos and I would like to try it out. Thanks for taking the time to put this together as now I know what I need and how to go about doing it! I am sure mine will have a little wonky wire in it as well!

      Thanks mate. Haha yours will look good I'm sure, it does take some practice at first though. I was having real issues seeing what I was doing here with the camera being so close. I usually have the crimp tool right in front of my face to do it. 😂👍

      Thanks mate! Haha this wasn't my smoothest job either. It was about 30x harder with the camera and lights in the way... Well that's my excuse! lol.
      Haha yeah she's right, armless T-Rex.
      I'm kinda sad though, after all the work I put into the scary skull guy on the left, people only notice the Dino-Crimpers. 🤣👍

    Thanks Mick, learnt another good tip. I'm sick of having servo wires all over the place and twisted around with cable ties. They always get in the way of moving parts and looks terrible. Boats are ok ,plenty of room but cars have everything jammed in. I'll be getting this tool for sure . Have a good weekend mate.

    Neat tool and thanks for sharing Mick l must admit l never bother to do this l just cable tie the excess wires together to look neat....but your builds under the bodies always look super neat and tidy my friend l must say that!😉👍Maybe l should have a go and be a little more tidy with wires!       Thanks James. Yeah a lot of people (including myself) usually just tie them up. I really only do this on custom builds or cars where there's not a lot of space. Cheers mate. 👍

    You can also just open the servo and de-solder the cable. Shorten to length and re-solder the shortened cable; no need for new crimps etc. I also find crimps to be very unreliable unless you have exactly the right combination of tool, crimp and wire gauge... if any of the three isn't exactly right the wires just pull out.
    The other thing you could do is wrap the excess cable around a screwdriver to create a nice coiled wire; pull the screwdriver out, and plug the cable in. This way you can reuse in another project.

      I've done it that way many times myself on both servos and ESC's. This video was meant for the ones who have been asking me over the years as they've seen shortened wires in a lot of my videos. I could have shown the whole opening a servo/ESC thing but then it would turn into an hour long component disassembly/soldering tutorial on top of the crimping, and a lot (who are asking) would have already seen that in my other videos. Sure you can also coil them up or tie them up but it's just not the same and not what people were asking for. If using the wrong tool/crimp/wire gauge yes you can have issues, but practice and experience is really the key with these things. I've been doing it this way for many years with no reliability issues. 👍

    These connectors need to be modernized. The quality of products I’ve been getting has pushed me to me converting these plugs for future builds.

    Ha ha, Mick, with that macro footage it so easy to see... In real life, not so much... That white wire issue, oh, I had that happen to me too, it is sooo annoying!
    I would have wanted to write hardwired to selfdestruct, but old Dave probably wouldn't have found that funny, there, that's your Megadeth joke, they get worse and worse...

      Thanks James! I've done a few build videos where I solder the motor wires in the video. Can't think of one right now though! lol. I may do a dedicated video on it in the future but there's really not much to it. I'll leave you a link to a video where I solder Dean plugs onto a battery, it's really no different soldering motor wires on. In the case where it's a brushless motor with the big solder tabs and you're using 14AWG - 12AWG wire (the big stuff) it really all comes down to the iron. I'd go for minimum 60W soldering iron for those sized wires, it makes life so much easier. That way you can heat it up fast and get it done without heating everything else up. Hope this helps!

    Very helpful video, hey do you by chance have crimpers that you use for brushed motor wires?Like the ones where you slide the terminals onto the tabs on brushed motors. I have been trying to figure out what those are called .

      Thanks Heathcliff! I think the ones you mean are spade connectors, like they used on the old Kyosho (and other) motors? If so they can be crimped with a basic crimp tool. I usually solder mine though. But something like this below.

      I just checked mine. The spade connectors you'll need are the female 4.8mm. So you should be right with that kit, it has them and the crimper. 👍

    I’ve gotten good at making crimped connections, but sliding them into the connector is a real PITA. Any advice for pushing into the connector after crimping?

      They should slip in very easily. If not it might be that the insulation is a bit thick. It can be hit n miss finding wire which works perfectly. As most wire is unbranded I can't recommend and brand. So my best answer is, try to find wire that has thinner insulation. Hope this helps! 👍

    I have actually opened up a servo and soldered a new wire on to the circuit board. Not very easy to do. Also you run the risk of over heating the chips on the circuit board and ruining the servo. Thoughts?

      I've done it many times myself that way too. For sure, you do run the risk of damaging the servo. 👍

    Can anyone help me out figure which connectors i need for the sanwa rx-482? Thing is so tiny not much fits perfect. Some connectors need lips shaved off etc. I would like to just replace the connectors with the correct ones.

      Once the jaws are locked onto the plug, you can release it by using the little latch in the handle.
