  • In today's video, I'm going to talk about the 7 Fujifilm lenses that I bought, tried, and didn't quite like.
    So far I've only been making videos and reviews about Fujifilm gear that I like and use for my own professional and personal work. But before I got to the final kit I have right now, I tried a whole slew of Fuji lenses - 7 of which I sold off or gave away because they just didn't give me enough reason for me to hold on to them.

    For those who feel inclined to make a comment about how tired I look, or how my eyes look: this is a combination of the redness of the eczema (skin condition) around my eyes as well as my first try at lighting my new studio while it’s still being built (the light stand was too high cause shadows in my eye sockets. Any jokes about how I look will be deleted. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

    Hey, Reggie-- I just wanted to say thank you for your videos. I have really enjoyed them. I would point to you (and a couple of other guys) as being crucial to my getting into the Fuji system about 2.5 years ago. I am in agreement with most of your evaluations here. I bought the 10-24 not long ago and have been trying to use it for various things, but it is certainly NOT the 16 1.4. There are several products that you've mentioned over time that have found your way into my gear bag(s). Keep up the good work, and thanks again.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  Před 4 lety

      Glad you share the same sentiment! If I was more in line with landscape shooting or maybe action sports, I can see the 10-24 being in line with those types of genres. But yes, for the ytpe of stuff I shoot, the 16mm 1.4 is just a phenomenal piece of kit :)

    Thats apart of the lens rotation process. They come and go. I just recently traded my 16mmf2.8 and 35mmf2 for the 50mmf2 and cash but my silver 23mmf2 will make up for the first 2 being sold but the 23mmf2 is a beast for sure! Dope video! I appreciate your reasons for letting certain lens kits go.

      I love the 35 1.4 for it's style, the 35mm 2 for it's snappyness and the compact design. I also now own the viltrox 35mm 1.4 because the Fuji both are not good for Video and now i don't know which one to sell even though it would be rediculous to keep all three.

    Hey Reggie! Hope you are doing well in these strange times! Of the lenses you sold I still own the 18-55. And I must admit: it's my least used lens. I like it because it's small enough to put in a throuser pocket. Mostly used for casual shooting. But it shines for video with stabilisiation at 18mm

    Interesting perspectives. Some of these were on my to “try or buy” list, so I appreciate this video. Some I own. I agree with your comments about the 23 and 35 f2. Close focusing is especially soft on the 23 f2. But I quite like the 10-24 f4.

  • @torinsall
    @torinsall Před 3 lety

    So true about personal preference. For example, I prefer zoom lenses whereas my spouse prefers primes. That said, In addition to the XT4, I have the X100V which is great for just having a good quality compact camera. Amazingly, I like the X100V despite it not having a zoom or fully articulating screen or image stabilization. Then again those are all on the XT4 which I love, especially with the collection of zooms (XF 10-24, 16-80, 50-140, 100-400; and the handy lightweight XC 50-230).
    As you said, it's about what you want to do with it, and the 2 cameras are used for different purposes.

    Great hearing your thoughts and rational. Very logical without letting emotion make the decision. The Fuji fast primes are my favorite. Love the way they render and their size is not to big compared to full frame.

    • @paulthomas8986
      @paulthomas8986 Před 4 lety +1

      Reggie Ballesteros I I have the 23 1.4 and 35 1.4. Optically the 23 is a better lens. More contrast, sharper wide open, less purple fringe, but I just like the feel of the images with the 35 1.4. They have that vintage feel to them. I wish it was like 2mm wider field of view. I have used the mitakon 35 0.95 and that lens is slightly wider. It seems to work better indoors when you are cramped for space. That lens is a boat anchor though and I don’t like the minimal focus distance. The bokeh is pretty sweet though. I just keep going back to the 35 1.4. Love how small and light it is too. And the sexy metal lens hood, lol.

    Nice video Reggie.
    Don't be afraid to leave some space in your sentences, this felt a little bit 'chopped up' and jolty to the point where it was a bit distracting.
    In terms of lenses, I own the X-T3 with the 18-55 and 35mm F2 mainly for family documentary stuff. I really love the responsiveness of the 35mm F2 for chasing a toddler. Thinking about selling the 18-55 though as I really struggle with zooms. Interested to check out your 18/2 video!

If I want to play begemoth, I can use canon lenses with fringer adapter, but do so rarely. The tip you are trying to give here is "Go with little primes". Totally agree.

    I almost bought the 18mm but now I'm using my 18-55 as a 18mm lens. The 2.8 is much sharper than the pancake. And I'm using the 50-140 a lot for my event and concertphotography. Heavy and expensive. Almost sold it but can't do without her ;-)

    Great vid Reg! I'm about to commit the ultimate sin and sell my 16mm 1.4 only because I have a lot of other lenses and it has value. I know ill regret it one day. I sold off 23 f2, 10-24, 56 1.2 for various reasons (mainly for money and lack of use) and I'm still carrying too much!

    Wow this was more interesting than gear videos usually are. Some of the reasons you mentioned as cons for you are actually positives for me. Im not expecting everyone to agree with me of course I just never thought it would be so varied where a con for someone is a plus for someone else. Id be curious to see what you think about the fuji 60mm lens as well. It seems like a must have lens for me but given what you mentioned im guessing you potentially wouldnt like it or would probably prefer the 56mm f1.2 instead.

    Great video, and really appreciate the insight on the 10-24. Kind of in the same situation, two toddlers and was looking for a vlog/documentary lens with a wide angle. Currently using the 23 f2 as my main lens, but dang it if I'm not tempted now by the 18mm f2.

    • @andrewp7002
      @andrewp7002 Před 4 lety +1

      I don't agree about the 10-24. It is not a heavy lens for what it is, and of course, you don't have to shoot 10mm, but it is handy to have that available if you're in a tight spot.

    • @Reggiebphoto

    If you ever get back into the walk around video lens territory, I encourage the 16-80 over the 18-55. It's actually not that heavy/bulky . It lives on my X-T30 (with grip) and balances fairly well. I found it awesome for street photography in Mexico as it stayed on my camera during that trip . I was scared to change lenses with all the flying dirt /dust there lol.

    Since I got into the system on a budget with a beat up $200 xe1 body I got an adapter for my Canon a series lenses and ended up getting a lens turbo for m42 lenses and a Helios 44-6 and that's a combo I enjoy. Though it sounds like manual focus isn't your thing. Then again I have a weird thing for Soviet lenses. Not for everyone, but a fun thing to try that won't break the bank.

    I have noticed that the 35mm 1.2 does not give as much light as the 18-55mm 2.8 to 4.5 My take on this is down to the fact that it has a much smaller front element. So with that what's your take on the 2.8 16mm-55mm as considering it has a massive front element to gather all that light could it perform as well as the 1.4s with smaller front elements?

    The 35mm f/2 is actually my favourite lens and I use it mainly for street photography. The 35mm in combination with Acros profile give some pretty spectacular pictures SOOC. But for wedding photography I can understand it's not fast enough. A couple of months ago I also bought the 23mm f/2 for street photography and I wasn't impressed by it. While the image quality is certainly owkey, it didn't invoke the same feeling as pictures of the 35mm f/2.

  • @RobShootPhotos
    @RobShootPhotos Před 4 lety +1

    I'm an Olympus shooter but I want to keep up to date with FujiFilm so I watch yours and Omar's video. Had a question, what I understand with FujiFilm has something similar to Pro-capture mode on the Olympus where when 1/2 pressing the shutter or pressing the back button, it rolls full RAW images in high or low sequential burst until you press down the shutter and it saves multiple shots prior to the photo you shot. If Fujifilm does have that, I feel like it is never mentioned and like to see how this works.

    Hey Reggie, I just wanted to say thanks for making these vids! It was your vids and others that motivated me to make the jump from a Canon 6D to Fujifilm X-T2 for my landscape and portrait photography about 1.5 years ago. I enjoy the perspective you bring to the table when it comes to using Fujifilm and I look forward to seeing more vids in the future!
    In regards to the question you asked at the end of the video, I wonder if you've tried the 50-140mm f2.8? I've rented it a couple times and I did enjoy the fast focusing, easy framing with zooming, and OIS. However it is a bit of a behemoth! Also, I found that at some point, when it gets too dark, that the 56mm f1.2 does a better job focusing. I'd love to hear your experience with the 50-140 and if you haven't tried it, I think you ought to give it a go and tell us what you think about it in your next vid! Maybe it'd be cool to talk about it in context with the other Fuji zoom lenses? I'm hoping to round out the long end of my kit someday!

    Hard choices for some. I try not to be discouraged by your opinion as mainly you use lenses for earning money so if I were in your shoes surely I would go for best quality lenses as the money spend would return. These days are far behind me(I had 2-3 years of photo sessions and weddings) and now I moved to Fuji system(From ff Canon) for portability. What I'm trying to state is that I have no money to spend for a top lens and I prefer to keep my WR lenses so I could take my Fuji for hiking etc.
    I'm now testing my 27mm which made my x-pro2 extremely portable and this is more important than lousy(yup) 2.8 aperture. I think we should all get the lenses that would work for US and allow us to take pictures not to state 'uhh this lens is soo heavy and bulky and my camera is too heavy' ;)

It’s a handy little kit, fun to use and it takes good pictures. For the G9 i‘m using the Panasonic Leica Nocticron, the Panasonic Leica 8-18 and the Olympus Pro 12-40mm f2.8 and in comparison to the x-t2 these pictures mostly looks better, sharper with much more contrast. AHH good boy Reggie - getting rid of that crappy kit lens. I had 3 of those monstrosities over as many years and came to hate that lens. Everybody was talking about this optical Nirvana that I was searching for, but all I got was unsharp images wide open - especially at the 55mm end where I do portraits and street. I never shoot landscapes and always only people, therefore I always need to shoot my lenses wide open and the kit lens was a real disappointment. After 3 different copies, I realised it was a dud. After finally getting the magical 16-55, I then found the quality I was searching for. That now stays 'glued' onto one of my X-H1's and the 90mm on the other. This is all the kit I need. I also agree with you on the 'Fuji Crons'. I don't have the 35mm, but I have the 23mm and it just sits in the cupboard like yours and never gets used. My 16-55 is much sharper, the images much more crisp and punchy wide open. I think those 'crons' were a big disappointment for people. Oh well, who cares! @@Reggiebphoto Good to know. I just bought a 23/2 for myself as a wee xmas pressie (sitting under the tree!). I was a little torn over getting it... but it was a sweet deal so decided to just go for it. Don't mind me, I'm just ball busting :D
      I do find it odd that the X100V is SO well received, yet the actual 23/2 lens from fuji much less so. I have heard many say the close focusing (of the 23/2) is not great, but then equally many that say it is blown way out of proportions. Considering portraits are my thing, I don't think I will heavily care if things are a tad soft (i'm not doing fashion shoots here), I often use filters to soften and take the digital edge off a lot of my work anyway. Maybe there is charm in the less than ideal close focusing IQ of the 23/2, you just need to be aware of it? Guess I'll find out...
      I have to say, I find Fuji really dropped the ball on their 23, 33mm (and now 56mm) offerings, staples on any system. I feel they could be doing better here and are being a bit lazy if I'm honest. The 90/2 however is an incredible optic that ticks all the boxes, LM, WR, IQ and AF.
