    That CPU replacement contraption tho! I wanted more!
    These videos are highlighting your diagnostic and thought process in real time. You’re so good at verbalizing your conscious stream of thought, that’s the content I’m consuming. I recommend minimizing the jump cuts, even if the video goes long. I haven’t watched your entire library so don’t be afraid to re-cover what a previous video covered. I binge watch makers that continue to explain every step because it adds context. Each repair is a unique experience, even if it’s the 10,000 power plug you’ve replaced. I’ll watch all 10,000 if you continue to verbalize your thought process and techniques during the entire repair.

      I think I would rather in terms of my personal not business-oriented opinion go that route where I do the full diagnostic, verbalize everything, thought process on the diagnostic, and so on as I think it would be more fun. It's also less work for editing and so on. Doing this would help me build a community of like-minded individuals, and I think I would have a much closer relationship with my audience. There would be a lot of benefits.
      However the downfall and this is the ugly, greedy businessman that I am coming out, is that I wouldn't be able to get as many views on these longer videos. I could be completely wrong, but I think a lot of the people that watch the videos come on, they don't mind a quick explanation of the issue but they are there to watch the fix and be provided with an answer to their problem. They don't necessarily want to follow the journey. Again I could be wrong. I think the audience that pays me and allows me to keep doing this, are the people who don't feel comfortable soldering or using a multimeter to diagnose and repair their own unit, they are interested in learning a little more about it but not necessarily deep dive into it, they would rather just send it to me and pay me to do it for them. Which is what pays for me to be able to do these.
      I am afraid that If I go through the full start-to-finish diagnostic I will lose a lot of potential viewers and sales on the back end.
      You know what, I'll give it a try and see what happens because the reality is that everything I perceive about how a video is successful at converting viewers into customers is an opinion and not based on facts. I feel like as a rule of thumb, the more you give to people, the more you get back. And if going through that entire diagnostic process is better for the repair community, it could help the channel in ways I didn't expect.
      I have a few devices that came in that I have never fixed before and while I have a good idea of how to fix them, I haven't had to yet. I'll try a longer format video where I do start at the opening, and record the entire troubleshooting thought process.
      Great feels like I just went to business therapy.

    Would the repair have been simpler if the customer only needed a single working port? Could you have spoofed the failed parts in some way?
    Finally, is it safe to assume that a good quality UPS provides sufficient protection against lightning?

      A quality UPS would protect against lightning as long as everything passes through that UPS. This means your ethernet cable needs to first plug into the UPS have a surge protection system for it and then from the UPS to the NAS device. Same goes with the HDMI cable if you connect an HDMI to the back of your NAS.
      Surges in my experience almost never come in through the power, it's almost always through ethernet, coax, HDMI or other low voltage data lines that have 0 built in surge protection by default.

      Haha yes given the amount of work there was it would have been best. Unfortunately they are not available so that was not an option for us.

    How much does a repair like this cost?

      For this one given the amount of work we did have to charge an extra fee, but we typically do it under a flat fee as long as we don't have to replace the CPU.
      We have links to our flat rate repair service listing in the video description. We do also offer a 1 year warranty for all of our repairs.
