  • In 1963-4 it didn't matter to music lovers in 11 countries that they couldn't understand what Belgian nun Sister Luc-Gabrielle; Soeur Sourire, Jeannine Deckers, was singing about the founder of her order, St. Dominic. They grooved to the cheery song, one of the few foreign language number 1 hits in America. Though I studied French for many years, I didn't get more than fifty percent of it. That's why I am providing a translation with the help of the internet and my French colleague philipchek who informed me about the Albigensian heretics, the Inquisition, the Catholic Church, and St. Dominic. Dominic was a gifted 13th-century preacher who wanted no part of the church's bloody wars against heretics or the barbaric cruelty of the Inquisition. His method of conversion was preaching. He founded an order of preaching friars and convents. Miracles were ascribed to his name, The singing nun was a feminist singer/songwriter, who, after her one big hit's financial success was hounded to suicide by the Belgian tax collectors. Her other songs can be found on CZcams.

I remembered it from my childhood in ex-Yougoslavia, and it was played on the radio many times. Lord God found a way to make it happen among the neo-pagans and marxists. :) Decades later, in Canada I told my friend, Redemptorist Father, something about St.Thomas Aquinas and he started singing "Dominika-nika, nika..." :). Here you are. :)
It is contagious, I cant get it out of my head!

This song was popular in the weeks following the Kennedy assassination, when there was otherwise a dark mood across the western world. Soeur Sourire's appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in early Jan. 1964 kept the song popular until The Beatles appeared on the show in Feb. of that year. She also sang (Flemish) Dutch and German versions of Dominique, but they do not flow quite as well as the French version does. Although most people who heard the French version did not understand the words (I understand most of them because I learned French in high school and university), the song was used by many French teachers in the US and Canada as one way of teaching the language. (Edith Piaf's songs were also used as part of French instruction in US and Canadian schools.)

I loved this song as a child, it was always playing in the radio in the early 60's. I decided to research her life. The Singer of this song took her own life at only 51, when she was left in poverty, all the money and profits she would have made, were ROBBED from her by unscrupulous people. When you listen to this joyful song please think of her.

Likewise, I studied Spanish in college two years (1976-78), also no fluency in the language.
I came to the conclusion long ago one must really speak, hear and read a language every day with others who also speak the language to actually attain fluency.
Learning a language from a foreign language teacher, in a classroom with with textbooks and with headphones in a so-called "language lab," may be helpful, but not a guarantee of total success. It is the total more complete immersion in a language which results in fluency.
And it sure does help if one is raised in a bilingual or multilingual home, with family members who also speak and read the language of a foreign tongue. Also, of course, visiting and living in the foreign country where that language is spoken will result in greater immersion in the foreign language.

"On this day in ’85, the Singing Nun (Marie Jeanine Deckers) took her own life in a suicide pact with her life-partner, Annie Pecher. Her song, the 1963 smash 'Dominique', sold over 1.5 million copies, winning a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Song. As a kid, I remember Deckers and her 3 fellow nuns appearing on Ed Sullivan… The song was such a cultural phenom that a (mostly fictional) feel-good movie was made of her life with Debbie Reynolds, and Sally Fields' ‘The Flying Nun’ was definitely influenced by Decker’s popularity. Deckers was a Belgian singer-songwriter and a member of the Dominican Order as Sister Luc Gabriel. An unlikely pop star, she wrote 4 albums of songs - many that were lyrically either ‘approved’ or ‘censored’ by her Mother Superior. She was not allowed to write any songs that were considered ‘sad’ and, of course, any topic that was controversial was forbidden. When she wrote a song in 1967 defending the use of contraception, the Church pressured her touring mngmnt to cancel an entire tour even tho’ she’d left the order by then. Though the royalty agreement between the Church and Deckers was never disclosed, apparently her diocese received her royalties w/o her knowledge… and later, when she left the order, she discovered $100,000. had been paid to the Church unbeknownst to her. To make matters worse, her label, Philips, pretty much took the rest - leaving her financially crippled. Though Deckers never ‘came out’ about her sexuality, she spent most of her life with her lover, Annie Pecher, and struggling with financial ruin, Church condemnation, a faltering career, and repression from society in general… Deckers suffered a mental breakdown. Shortly afterwards, she and Pecher took their own lives in their Belgian apartment. For those who discount the damage religion has done for centuries to gay and lesbian people… to those who are, right now, passing legislation to forbid young people from discussing sexuality or even saying the word, ‘gay’… I say, ‘f you’. To those (religious or not) who support with words and deeds the acceptance of the LGBT community… I say, 'thanks', and may whatever god you worship bless and keep you.

    Dalam kemiskinan suci
    Dominika-piknik
    Semua hilang begitu saja
    Jalan yang buruk dan bernyanyi
Di semua jalan, di semua tempat
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
    Enflamma semua sekolah
Anak laki-laki dan perempuan yang bergairah
    Dan untuk menyebarkan berita
    Inventá the Preachers Brother
    Dominika-piknik
    Semua hilang begitu saja
    Jalan yang buruk dan bernyanyi
Di semua jalan, di semua tempat
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
    Di Dominique dan saudara-saudaranya
    Roti habis
Dan dua malaikat maju ke depan
Membawa dua roti emas besar dominique-nique
    Semua hilang begitu saja
    Jalan yang buruk dan bernyanyi
Di semua jalan, di semua tempat
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
    Dominique hidup dalam mimpi
    Pengkhotbah di seluruh dunia
    Di bawah mantel Perawan
    Dalam jumlah besar berkumpul
    Dominika-piknik
    Semua hilang begitu saja
    Jalan yang buruk dan bernyanyi
Di semua jalan, di semua tempat
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
    Dominique, Ayahku yang baik
Buat kami tetap sederhana dan ceria
    Untuk mengumumkan kepada saudara-saudara kita
    Hidup dan Kebenaran
    Dominika-piknik
    Semua hilang begitu saja
    Jalan yang buruk dan bernyanyi
Di semua jalan, di semua tempat
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik
Dia hanya berbicara tentang Tuhan yang baik

Correction: at 1.0l "dilligence" should have transated "stagecoach" instead of the cognate "dilligence."

"fought the Albigensians," i.e., Cathars. It felt uneasy, because "fighting heretics" often meant killing them by large numbers.

"bon Dieu" is better translated "The good God". In French, "Bon Dieu" is used as a name

    Lyrics
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
    À l'époque ou Jean-sans-Terre
    D'Angleterre était le roi
    Dominique, notre père,
    Combattit les Albigeois.
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
    Certain jour, un hérétique,
    Par des ronces le conduit,
    Mais notre père Dominique,
    Par sa joie le convertit.
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
    Ni chameau, ni diligence,
    Il parcout l'Europe à pied
    Scandinavie ou Provence
    Dans la sainte pauvreté.
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
    Enflamma de toute école
    Filles et garçons pleins d'ardeur
    Et pour semer la Parole
    Inventa les Frères-Prêcheurs.
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
    Chez Dominique et ses frères
Le pain s'en vint à manquer
    Et deux anges se présentèrent
    Portant de grands pains dorés.
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
    Dominique vit en rêve
    Les prêcheurs du monde entier
Sous le manteau de la Vierge
    En grand nombre rassemblés.
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
    Dominique, mon bon père,
    Garde-nous simples et gais
    Pour annoncer à nos frères
    La Vie et la Verité
    Dominique, nique, nique
    S'en allait tout simplement
    Routier pauvre et chantant
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu
