  • www.ted.com Despite multibillion-dollar investments in cybersecurity, one of its root problems has been largely ignored: who are the people who write malicious code? Underworld investigator Misha Glenny profiles several convicted coders from around the world and reaches a startling conclusion.

    @romeoneverdies ...A guy breaks into a bank, cracks the vault and leaves a note inside saying "Improve your security or someone's going to take the money." A 2nd guy breaks into the bank, cracks the vault, leaves no trace and sells the info on how to crack the vault. And finally a 3rd guy breaks into the bank, cracks the vault and takes the money. Two out of three are criminals, and the good guy happens to be technically guilty of break and enter even though he did something good and harmless.

    ...and it makes sense to me that they'd find their way into a far more constructive environment for rehabilitation than a prison where they will be crushed by brutality. I see in mind a prison facility especially geared toward criminals who have intellectual skills they can use from within. Doing time behind bars, but with like people where they can be productive and access the healing benefits of doing something good with their skills.

  • @P00P0STER0US
    @P00P0STER0US Před 12 lety

    I'm not inclined to think that most such criminals should be given a great job instead of a prison sentence. They're criminals and a conscience is something you have when you're a child, long before the teen years. What is likely common among this breed is a contempt for common people, and a dismissive attitude toward causing others harm. I give a break to those guys who were nurtured by criminals since they were children. They really had no chance. However, a regular prison IS a big waste...

  • @P00P0STER0US
    @P00P0STER0US Před 12 lety

    @romeoneverdies So, by criminal I'm referring to people who did not crack systems to do harmless good in the act. I would consider someone who just breaks into a system for the practice or fun to be guilty of a crime and liable for some response from the law. I'd expect that response to be minimal but enough to funnel their energy into something more controlled and constructive. If I break into banks just for practice, well...

    totally agree. The only problem I see in it, is that how would you define a real hacker with great capabilities, worth of being hired (if he or she wants, that i doubt) or forced to work for the state for a certain amount of years, from those who is just a fraudster with some basic hacking abilities, like that ATM stealer who was earning over 100k a week? Where would you put the line there? And who would protect the rights of hacker when they work for gov? It could easily become just a slavery

    this could potentially be a good idea, however this is shockingly similar to one way of how the roman empire fell.
    the romans hired people from gaul to protect the border when it was gaul they were defending their border from. You could see how this problem unfolded.
    I'm not saying that it's a bad idea or that these people deserve to be in prison. I'm saying that we should always be cautious when using the "enemy" to benefit and protect us.

    @romeoneverdies Let's say someone breaks into your house, cracks the pwd on your computer and leaves a text window open to let you know s/he was there. What's your reaction: To feel violated and want them to be apprehended, or to hope you catch them so you can employ them to improve your security? Considering unauthorized entry isn't something a law-abiding person pursues, it's not surprising that the law takes a formal and dim view of such people, even though they have the will to do good.

    Second, I am sure the many people whom these 'harmless hackers' defrauded do not share Misha's view. Moreover, I view his final statement of "Each of these hackers has asked 'please let us work in the legitimate sector'" smack so familiarly of a drug addict coming home and saying 'I swear I'll get straight'
