Nice pics! Loads of history there...even Guy Gibsons dogs grave is nicely kept! The airfield is apparantly haunted as well if ya into that kind of thing. A good source of pics is 'After the Battle -Then and now- bases of bomber command'
Great pictures. Keep posting to keep the airfields alive. Good to see a RAF bomber base in good order in this day and age.But some of the rooms look empty, which could be a sign of things to come. Thanks
Sad to see it going into disrepair. I was based there 1987-90 and have many happy memories of the flying and mess functions. It would be great if this national treasure could be turned into a remembrance airfield to Bomber Command with a museum.
@jdraver No. I worked nights quite often and didn't see, feel or hear anything 'strange'. I explored the basement of the JRMess one night and nothing spooky down there. Cobwebs galore. I think it's real sad what's happened to our History.
Like most of the Base,It's just being run down and not looked after anymore, just a matter of time before a housing estate is built on this last piece of history, so sad.
Apparently not. According to recent reports the Conservative Government intend to turn RAF Scampton into an immigration detention centre. This would destroy local plans to create a centre for the future aviation and space industry, generating 1000s of jobs. Local plans include a heritage centre to honour Scampton’s proud history as the home of the ‘Dambusters’ 617 Squadron.
Hi, nothing military, just come from a long line of family who was in the forces,my main interest is the RAF,second world war, have met many a vet (whos left now )and still check out the old airfields which have not been built on. Went to scampton because of the dambusters film and eric who flew P for popsey in the film who I am frends with. charlie
My first job when I left school was to work at the naffi shop managers name was sneddon absolutely over it was in charge of the warehouse and making up all the messes food orders
Great pics, Thanks.
I spent 5 great years at RAF Scampton. One of the best Camps I've served at.

Sad to see the old station in such disrepair, I was stationed there in 1980. It was a busy hive of activity.

Sad to see it run down, It's most definitely the most famous RAF Camp in history, Should be protected by the National trust, Part of Britons Heritage!

Thanks for that ,may I ask what you did and when? charlie
Typical of this country if Scampton is closed. We owe so much to bomber command.
