Mrrcsound system from reds radio control model, best system ever.
I learned to fly gliders there in 1968, with the 643 gliding school. I then became a staff cadet, for a couple of years, happy days... All's well at Hemswell was a favourite saying.
This was one of the bases where my Mum served in the WAAFs during WW2. She was also at RAF Marham. She was very proud of her service in the WAAFs.
Got a sneaky feeling I went there, either on exercise or some form of GDT from Scampton, in '81. I know it wasn't that far away on the coach. I vaguely remember large wooden covers over ground level missile silos too?
I was stationed there from 1960 to 1962 as a MTD (motor transport driver). This was my two years national service. We often did a sixty hour week and was paid £4.50. At that time it was a Thor missile base and about half of the personnel were American service men. We lived in wartime H blocks and the one I lived in was named Hannah after a ww2 flying ace. My impression of the RAF at that time was that it was mainly staffed by Scotsmen. The war had only been over for fifteen years and so many of the officers were ex flying people. SAC John Barringer.
I work in Hangar 2. Now it has become a vitamin and supplement manufacturer. I have been in all sorts of spooky places withing the RAF buildings as the company i work for owns many of them.
The entire technical site and domestic blocks including many post war married quarters at RAF Hemswell were purchased by my company Welbeck Estate Group (www. twsg. co. uk ) from the Ministry of Defence in the mid 1980's. Nearby we had also purchased all the NCO married quarter site at RAF Faldingworth in 1981, the Bomber Command HQ at RAF Bawtry Hall and all the post war NCO married quarters at RAF Scampton Our company have specialised since 1979 in the acquisition of ex MOD sites and we have never demolished any ex military building and to that end we disposed of several of the buildings at RAF Hemswell to different buyers by private treaty. Those buildings that remained including several barrack blocks, the Sergeant's mess, Officers mess, station cinema, water tower, SHQ and guardroom etc were eventually sold by our agents, Earl and Lawrence of Lincoln by public auction which was held in one of the Mess buildings.
Sad to see it going into disrepair. I was based there 1987-90 and have many happy memories of the flying and mess functions. It would be great if this national treasure could be turned into a remembrance airfield to Bomber Command with a museum.
If walls could talk !
i used to live there
Sad to see the old station in such disrepair, I was stationed there in 1980. It was a busy hive of activity.
i live here its my 7th year
My dad was stationed here in the 60's and we lived in the wooden huts that used to be occupied by the flight crews and it was lovely, my favourite quarters ever. Hemswell doubled for Scampton in the film the Dambusters [sorry if that's already been said]
My name is Rick Smith. I was stationed at RAF Hemswell for the period 1961 - 1963, (give or take). The CO was Gp. Capt. R S Boast. I was a Clerk Sec in the General Office. Flt Lt Roger Blin was the Officer I/c the General Office, ably assisted by WO Taylor. Sqn Ldr Bruce Wall was the OC PSS. Made some terrific memories and friends there and would be happy to hear from anyone who may remember me. Hemswell was not Operational in my time, but was responsible for several "Squadrons" (ie 97, 104, 269 etc). A lot of my social time was spent at RAF Kirton Lindsey(?), Gainsborough, RAF Spitalgate, and Lincoln. Shame it closed down and has become what it has.
does any one know any thing about the old naafi hemswell cliff latterly the Spar shop. Any stories, history, uses of the building, ghosts what ever please.
I did a duty over night in the naafi bar not the spar shop . but experienced things which I reported to the rsm on completion of duty
Hi Charles! Nice of you to look at some of my uploads and subscribe! Greeting from Dublin Ireland, Fred
My brother, based Gainsborough, but his married quarters were at RAF Hemswell. We travelled to visit after birth of his son. Despite being about 6 ms pregnant I was to visit control tower & mess at night with another soldier who wanted to go. The Sentries' dogs would not go near the buildings at night. Unfortunately our car crashed on the way & my mother would not let me go. The soldier was on duty the next day. I never did get to see the mess. Michael Bentine wrote about hauntings there,
Hi John i was also a Mtd ,but i joined in 1980 .I drive Hgv and i have often delivered waste plastic to the old camp.I find it interesting as most of the buildings are still there. One of the hangars got burnt down a couple of years ago ,never to be repaced. So much history ,carnt get enough of the Raf now im a civi .Good to read your comments John.
A ghost from the past.
@Dinosteveus this is true but its all about money and progression now days
My first job when I left school was to work at the naffi shop managers name was sneddon absolutely over it was in charge of the warehouse and making up all the messes food orders
@jdraver No. I worked nights quite often and didn't see, feel or hear anything 'strange'. I explored the basement of the JRMess one night and nothing spooky down there. Cobwebs galore. I think it's real sad what's happened to our History.
These brought back many memories as I was stationed there between 1960 to 1962 doing national service. I was an MTD (motor transport driver). My first day there they ordered me to take out a bus full of people to play football at another RAF base. I did as ordered but it was the first time I had ever driven a bus on the road. So much for health and safety? We worked a 60 hour week and the accident rate was very high. For this I was paid £3.
Sad to see it run down, It's most definitely the most famous RAF Camp in history, Should be protected by the National trust, Part of Britons Heritage!
I was in Scampton Ground Radio Section 1999- 91. Had some great times and some good nights out with the Jet Provost boys. Pity I had a twat of a Sgt though. Dick by name Dick by nature ( 2nd name rhymes with Feather )
Very good, 5 stars!
Like most of the Base,It's just being run down and not looked after anymore, just a matter of time before a housing estate is built on this last piece of history, so sad.
Apparently not. According to recent reports the Conservative Government intend to turn RAF Scampton into an immigration detention centre. This would destroy local plans to create a centre for the future aviation and space industry, generating 1000s of jobs. Local plans include a heritage centre to honour Scampton’s proud history as the home of the ‘Dambusters’ 617 Squadron.
Hi, nothing military, just come from a long line of family who was in the forces,my main interest is the RAF,second world war, have met many a vet (whos left now )and still check out the old airfields which have not been built on. Went to scampton because of the dambusters film and eric who flew P for popsey in the film who I am frends with. charlie
Hi Charlie, I was a Chef, '85-'90. Worked in all 4 Messes. You?
Thanks for that ,may I ask what you did and when? charlie
Great pics, Thanks. I spent 5 great years at RAF Scampton. One of the best Camps I've served at.
Great photoset thanks for sharing : )
Typical of this country if Scampton is closed. We owe so much to bomber command.

Great stuff.lots to look at,great to see all the vehicles.good weather for it as well. Thanks
Great pictures. Keep posting to keep the airfields alive. Good to see a RAF bomber base in good order in this day and age.But some of the rooms look empty, which could be a sign of things to come. Thanks
Nice pics! Loads of history there...even Guy Gibsons dogs grave is nicely kept! The airfield is apparantly haunted as well if ya into that kind of thing. A good source of pics is 'After the Battle -Then and now- bases of bomber command'
