Kulning - a northern herdingcall in the forest

  • Today in the forest I recorded some spontaneous "kulning", the ancient northern herdingcall. One of the things I love about kulning is the very special "in between" sounds. Not sad, not happy. Just something in between. Something very emotional that calls to our soul. Fragile, and very strong at the same time.
    Sorry about the bad sound in the high pitch parts. It is hard to know how far away to stand from the camera because of the very high sound. I will be better with that :)
    Hope you like it, and don't forget to subscribe on my channel :)

    To all dimwits accusing her of using effects / reverb: This is how it sounds in real life. Her high pitched voice is carrying very loudly for several kilometers and bouncing off the mountains, creating the sound reflections you hear.

    • @PelleKuipers
      @PelleKuipers Před 6 lety +67

      Except those reverberations wouldn't have such a nice long hall-sound. Snow isn't exactly something that reflects sound well, neither are trees. Don't call people dimwits if you don't know what you're talking about.

    • @misscoolgrisou
      @misscoolgrisou Před 6 lety +99

      @@PelleKuipers I actually witnessed kulning once and trust me it sounds just like that if not even more beautiful and the echo is the same

    • @PelleKuipers
      @PelleKuipers Před 6 lety +19

      I do believe that kulning can a reverb when someone is singing near a lake or somewhere else. Except I've searched for many other videos of people kulning and none have the same long reverb that Jinton has in this.
      This in combination that you can't see a mic anywhere yet her voice sounds like a close miced voice makes me believe these videos are doctored. If she were to use a mic from further away this would result in her voice changing depending on where she's standing (towards or away from the mic).

    • @Overxpossed
      @Overxpossed Před 6 lety +3

      it sounds like a hall revberb, that's true, and there are lot of damping elements that would cut off that reverb but, if mics are put quite away from the sound source, then you record more reverb than original sound. At the same time, wet weathers produce less damping since sounds travels longer distances onf wet enviroments. However, there is a bit of reberve added here, I guess, since early reflections are non audible in this enviromental scenary since the output source is very clouse to the input recording source, having a nice gain of the dry voice over the wet one.

    • @Overxpossed
      @Overxpossed Před 6 lety +2

      it also comparable; I just watched other videos and the reverb is quite different. In some cases there is a nice reverb due the enviroment, like at high altittude with mountains, but at in this type of enviroment is impossible even a superimposition of frecuencias doubling the amplitude to say, oh yeah this reverb is natural. However, I enjoy the singing anyway and I personally don't care about using a bit of reverb (properly used), but not so much as in this video.

    Dearest Jonna, i listen to this and it does something to me that I can only imagine is because of my roots in Sweden and Norway, im only 50% Scandinavian 100% European but know the stories of my family, some still there who were farmers, the names were Vold and Moeskau. Hearing you do this is wonderful and makes me even more proud. It stirs my inner self, ive always wanted to go back to the beginning, maybe someday i will. I've enjoyed watching your content, i believe you are truly a woman of the earth, a wonderful being and as angelic as i have always wished for, hopefully you're not the only one left! Best wishes from across the lands and sea from a relative you might say proudly here in the states but longing to see the lands there. Skål !

    I wonder how kulning sounds when performed by males, considering it's so high pitched. Is it something males do too or is it a more common practice between women?

    • @Ondemas
      @Ondemas Před 7 lety +19

      I believe it's much more common for women to do it, but there are men who do it. Try searching for "calle kular" here on youtube :)
