MLS NP lost all 3 of its games against Amateur/Semi-Pro today. That’s hilarious and awesome 😂

And one of em lost to a team that had only 10 playing. Portland & Austin should’ve mopped the floor with their opponents. Chattanooga is pretty much even with Miami United since they once were in the same league

Yeah that was the point. Playing against amateur sides with more senior players on their roster than a typical MLS NP opponent and the challenge of a cup competition is the reason for MLS NP inclusion. I think the loss of MLS NP teams actually speak more in favor of that decision than seeing MLS teams crushing another obscure opponent side yet again. The quality gap should be predictable whether the contest is between MLS NP sides vs. US amateur soccer or Premier League’s youth teams vs UK non-League football. There is really no triumph or surprise in the results that we see.

@@HungNguyen-qr7bt lol no the reason mls gave was they wanted them to play against more professional opponents but none of those 3 teams even made it far enough to play higher quality professional opposition or even professional opposition at all. Besides we all know the real reason is because the league favors leagues cup because its part of their cancerous tv deal and they make no money off the open cup.

@@donewiththeinternetthey cant, the teams mostly make up of young players with some fringe players from first-team roster. Why is everyone having the expectations that they’re going to crush amateur sides who have physically more mature players on their rosters? Dont we see enough results from other countries? PL’s youth teams fall to non-League opponents is a completely normal occurrence, so why it cant be here? I think it’s crucial that these MLS NP play against actual senior teams regardless of what level those teams play on the soccer pyramid, and losses only become valuable learning exp for the young players. Since you mentioned the politics behind the US Open Cup, I would like to point out that US Soccer is not completely blameless here. Everyone has the romantic idea of the US Open Cup being sth like the FA Cup but everyone forgets US Soccer is not even on the same level of competency as the FA. Findings have found that MLS viewers have as much as 6% of interests for such a historic tournament like the US Open Cup which itself speaks to the failure of promoting the competition from US Soccer and many dedicated MLS supporter groups like Sounders at Heart have openly questioned the US Open Cup on a sporting and commercial level. Despite the one-sided reactions online, both sides have legitimate reasons to be at odds with each other, which means both sides are not blameless. If MLS has a scheduling mess then US Soccer truthfully also has a mess of sth called the US Open Cup. US Soccer needs to be run by competent ppl to match the progress of soccer in this country and level the playing field with other more established federations before it ends up in the same state as Canada Soccer.

If MLS had a problem with their clubs losing to USL outfits, imagine how they’re feeling when they see their reserve teams losing to amateur teams from leagues not even sanctioned by the USASA.
    Let the first teams compete!

And to top it all off one of those clubs played with 10 men and yet still couldn’t be beaten

Cupset BAYBAY! And karma. Austin had a man advantage and still couldn’t put away an amateur team and lost in PKs. Karma takes out 3 MLSNP clubs on opening day in the tournament. And now Portland bites the dust too.

Glorious. I'm up WAY past my bedtime thanks to this. And I'm not a partisan for either side. It was just too much fun.

I'm an NYC FC fan with no real horse in this race (would be delighted to see our second team go on a run, but if we're knocked out, it's deserved payback for our owners being too lazy and elitist to send our first team and give us an actual fighting chance), and I LOVE seeing a classic Cupset play out in the Open Cup.
