Social worker here. I really can't stand the narrative that people on assistance don't want to work. Most of them really do. They are under employed due to availability in the area, have trouble finding childcare that aligns with available work schedules or have health issues/ disability that limits their ability to work. 90% of my cases work really damn hard.

Everything you mentioned about California, you can find way better in Tennessee, without driving for hours. Plus, there's better foraging and much more interesting, in my opinion, vistas and scenery. There's a lot of diversity in what can be grown in gardens. You might be pleasantly surprised if you lived in Tennessee. There are a lot of other states in which the living is wonderful, without the downside of California and its high taxes... among other things. To each, his or her own. If you like California, you'll probably be happy there. I'd pick Tennessee in a flash. :)
Something tells me you don't know what it's like to be actually disabled, without family to help. Sometimes older people, as well as probably young people, too, no longer have family around and truly no longer able to work, no matter how much you want to. Don't assume everyone who uses benefits wouldn't need them if they'd just go out and work.
You might be the only one not at work right now,so others will come out to the trail you're walking later, when they get home from work.
I've been watching you a long time. I usually agree with just about everything you say. Not today. And, life can be very simple anywhere you live, and it can be complicated anywhere you live. It's up to each of us to make sure we're living the life we want.

I would at least buy high deductible medical coverage if available or a Christian medical share policy. If your income is low, you should receive a subsidy under the ACA and a pretty low monthly cost.

Yes, my rent is more expensive but there’s so much more free things to do there! I got decent pay and health insurance and doing a job I actually like! Texas is car centric and I found out where I’m renting is so walkable that I’m only a ten minute walk from where I’ll be working. There is a community garden, co-op, and local theater all in walking distance where if I can volunteer for fun and get community. I’m so tired sitting in traffic for 20 minutes just to get food with friends at an overpriced restaurant where it was mediocre and could’ve made a better meal at home… I need a change of pace for once and can’t wait to be in the nature. I used to live in the Appalachian Mountains and worked at the local Walmart and many people received food stamps and they didn’t get as much as you seem to think. Every state sets what benefits they offer to the poor and Tennessee maybe gave 250 per family. Most people couldn’t find work and some only came to the store once a month to buy supplies and then headed back to the small rural homes they lived in. Many were poorly educated or had health problems. Jobs and factories that once flourished in the region were sent to China. I saw some of the oldest cars of any area I’ve ever lived in and we aren’t talking classic cars just very old cars because they couldn’t buy anything better. Many lived in the same house their parents and grandparents lived in because the houses were paid for. As far as social security, my late husband and myself paid into it from the time we were about 15 and my husband passed away at 63 so I receive widows benefits but still have to work. I earned that money and I do live in a small home and am extremely frugal. I don’t judge your lifestyle yet you seem to judge and criticize others on a regular basis. If others live differently than you then somehow they are wrong. I usually enjoy your videos but no one way of life is perfect or a one size fits all.

The average SNAP benefit per person was about $121 per month, which worked out to about $4.00 per person per day.[11] Since April 2020 average SNAP benefits have been higher because of legislation that provided temporary increases during the COVID-19 public health emergency. When the EAs end after the February 2023 issuance, we estimate SNAP benefits per person will average about $182 per month, or $6.00 per person per day, reflecting the higher TFP and the effects of recent inflation in food prices.[12] (See box, “Several Major Factors Have Affected SNAP Benefits in Recent Years.” This is from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

I agree, Carolyn Davis. I think “benefits” vary greatly across the country. I lived in the rural South for over 20 years and worked with the area food bank. Yes, I saw lots of people who I thought made really bad decisions and were “responsible” for their predicament and didn’t “deserve” help, but I also saw the grandparents raising grandchildren on a Social Security check, the elderly widow getting $12 a month in Food Stamps, the man who had to drive his old gas-guzzling truck 80 miles three times a week to go to dialysis. I’m not sure “city folk” realize just how bad things can be in poor, rural areas.

The back yard had fruit trees and a nice patio. Most of my friends and co-workers would have considered this a starter home, and it was. When I divorced, it became a long-term permanent home. The discretionary income to flip to a larger house was not there. So we stayed. I took out a wall to enlarge the living and dining room. I added closet space to the master bedroom.
