When my son was 5, I had little money. For his birthday week, I had called ahead to several businesses, to find out when we could visit, so that he could learn how things were made. We went to where they printed our local newspaper, saw how they did it, then got a little free token gift (I think it was a ruler at this place). At the potato chip factory, of course he got a little bag of chips. If a business told me he was too young to be in the place, I asked when a school group was scheduled to come through, saying I would be watching just my one child, and would keep him next to me. Most fun was the ice cream factory, and he got a free ice cream bar there. So my vacation days were well spent with him! Each day he would wake up, & learn which adventure we would be going on!

I babysit for free for a family that is having a rough time. I'm paying it forward because when my kids were little, the pastors wife did that for me. She taught me how to can food and also gave us free goat's milk.

This might be off subject but everything is connected somehow right. Being a single, elderly person I have discovered you can eat cheaply. I know you have talked about this. For example, I eat one main meal a day usually around noon. For example you can buy a large potato, fill it with vegetables like baby portabella mushrooms (delicious) etc. and you have something filling. If you have to do it you can. Yesterday I went to a farmers' market at a community college across the street. They were selling stuffed potatoes for like $10-$17+ each depending what you wanted. I said uh no. I walked back home and made my own for about what a buck ot two. It's all about choices. Stop eating out so much. Make dishes that you can expand (add nutrition filler). And it's delicious.

I agree with your viewpoint and I have lived this way my whole life. My mom was a child of the 1930’s Depression and we always had hand-me-downs or sewed our own clothes. We made handmade gifts for holidays, cooked our own food, did housework for our allowances, and had bank savings account by age 10. My mom discouraged us from buying comics, magazines or popular records because they were short-term pleasures. We didn’t have TV, instead played outside or ping-pong in our basement, made costumes and presented “shows”, and went to the library regularly. We were never bored and were very happy! As an adult, I don’t have a TV either, just a computer and internet. We all 3 have advanced degrees and are a pharmacist, engineer, and physician.

My downfall is my needle hobbies, which is my entertainment. Sewing, knitting, crochet, and food and herb gardening for prepping and preservation. I spend on those things. I wear my clothes for YEARS but I dress simply in good quality thrift and catalog sales, so I rarely shop for clothes, maybe every 3 to 5 years. I have an eccentric ascetic so my style is my own. I never pay full price for food, except for dairy, and shop clearance shelves for produce, breads, and meat. Mostly, I cook from scratch, meaning from what I have on hand. I cook and preserve for our dogs.
I might drive my car twice a week to shop food sales to fill in gaps of my pantry. Other than that, I stay home much of the time.
When my shoes wear out I keep them to work in the garden. I recycle linens into table cloths, curtains, cushions and dog beds that I donate to a local pet rescue. I forage weeds in my yard for teas and greens. I stew vegetable cutting, like carrot, garlic, onion skins and tops, herb stems, bones for broth that I can or freeze. As I write this I am drying dandelion flowers and wild violets for tea.
My downfall is spending on my needle crafts. But it is my source of creative entertainment and if it is not supported, I would be completely destitute of personal joy.

I’ll also make my own movie theater style popcorn at home with coconut oil (which I got a gallon of it for $25 on Amazon, and it’s lasted about 2 years and I still have half a container left) and I’ll sprinkle Flavacol on it (again, the container of flavacol lasts for several years) and I’ll have a movie night which feels close to a theater experience without the massive crowds and the cost that comes with going to the movies. I haven’t gone to the movies since and I don’t feel like I’m missing out. Minus the initial cost, my movie nights are basically cheap or they cost Pennies on the dollar

You’re awesome. I love your advice. I already do lots of things like this. The one thing I don’t skimp on is CZcams I get premium because I can’t stand to be bombarded with commercials. Lol. But it’s all I pay for. My son lives with me and he pays for internet. It feels so good to not have cable. My husband of 36 years divorced me and I cut off everything that he had to have like dumb cable. Waste of money. I’m just fine reading the Bible and renewing my mind from this vain world. Feels real good. Your channel is great. Keep up the good work and may Jesus keep blessing you. ❤️

We have double beds because the sheets are cheaper in that size ( also uses less washing water)and I buy clean used larger flat sheets rather than buying new fitted sheets which are getting expensive. I admire that you do all your own renovations/upkeep. I should be more skilled at that. We’ve always tried to work a bit less out of the home so that we could have more time working on our home and doing stuff with our kids by being self sufficient and teaching them those skills.
