- iPhone has finally joined the USB-C Club.
I test out the capabilities of the new iPhone 15 Pro and it's USB-C port.
From charging, storage, audio, peripherals and video out, i throw every USB-C device i can at the new port.

The blackmagic camera app lets you record any format to an external drive. From prores all the way down to h.264.
Ew Waw that’s good to know !
Very good to know that’s Legend.
So good. Apple should’ve shown all these in its keynote. These are huge changes which further moves an iphone towards a PC like device.
Yeah true, they should have
Less people buy the 1tb option. Even some people might unsubscribe to icloud because the can transfer any file even during offline, less money right?😂
@@thedersstudio Yes you're right. Makes sense they wouldn't want to advertise alternative storage options 😄
@@thedersstudio Yes! this helps in saving money.
The back panel replacement cost is less than half of previous iphones.
It’s a big win overall for customers
@@thedersstudioyou can transfer files to computer/external even on older iphones
I’d love further testing on the power output of iPhone’s USB-C port. I read that it’s 5V-0.9A but most external SSDs and HDDs especially require more than that yet they still work fine.
I hooked the hard drive up via a usb amp meter, but it doesn't have connections for data, so I don't know what the real power draw would be. But my amp meter hit a max of 0.77A
And the impact it may have on the drives over time.
@@RestoreTechnique I had a fairly old HDD that I tried to use with my tablet and it seemed to work fine but when transferring it would occasionally shut off and all progress would be lost. This was because it drew too much power, more than the tablet could supply. I fear this would be the same for iPhone 15s, although I do believe newer HDDs and SSDs especially won’t lose progress or shut off when trying to pull more power and rather limit their own power use. However, this would be different per storage device.
Yep but looking further for 16 series
ok
I’m really liking the 15 series now. Especially the USB C mic now being compatible is really nice
Great video. Straight to the point and lots of useful tests and info. 🎉
A video that answered all my questions. Good job
I'm definitely going to test out a few USB Docks. And the different ways a USB-C cable can be made are bad for the standard, along with Power Delivery not providing the minimum 5V 0.5A without a handshake.
Appreciate your in-depth testing 💚
This video was so helpful. I didn't understand all the fuss with USB-C on the iPhone, seeing all the possibilities in this video really opened my mind
Now I want to plug in one of those big usbc hubs with video, audio, multiple usb ports and Ethernet. Would be like a mini pc.
Such a useful video. Appreciate the content.
0:51 i like how the Galaxy calls the iPhone a "usb Device"
R u dumb💀
Thank you for this info, it's very helpful! Going to tweet this.
Apple’s switch to USB C, along with the EU’s ruling on consumer electronic devices needing to have user replaceable batteries is probably the closest thing we’ll see to world peace in our generation.
you have it backwards. EU is slowly making the world accept dictatorship, the government has much more important things to do than reach their hands into the pockets of private consumers.
next thing you know there will be government mandated apps and operating systems
Add non serialised stuff to boot
Wow. I thought about waiting for the next gen (16) for proper USB-C support but looks like they did it right. I might consider buying one of these 6-7 months later. Fascinating.
Be mindful that the non-pro version is USB 2, so it may not support high bandwidth things such as display out.
@@CullenJWebb Fair point. I was thinking of shelling out some more to get USB 3.2 with an iPhone 15 Pro.
thank you for such a detailed video.
No worries 👍
this video is great, I like those kind of test
Well done testing.

Great video, I learned a lot of useful things
Awesome video. Thanks.
You've opened so many possibilities!
I like these videos a lot! I want to know usb c capabilities of these phones! Nice video!
Awesome tests!
Our Dell Thunderbolt docks at our office allowed me to mirror the phone’s display on all 3 monitors, plus use the keyboard and mouse. It was wild.
Seeing Apple and Samsung in harmony. Apple has had a sumsung display for years
They've been trying to ditch them for awhile now iirc, but they probably haven't found a new viable supplier with good qc
Samsung manufacturers it, but the machines they make it with and the plans they use are all owned by Apple ;)
@@tydshiin5783 now that dynamic island is a thing they can't do it. Only Samsung has that good (quality) OLED screen cutting technology
now only for apple to switch over to RCS or whatever it was so we can have universal texting then i can finally have an android and an iphone
@@hidinglyGoogle got tired of waiting for mobile providers to implement RCS so they did their own implementation. Meaning it’s not conforming exactly to the standard. There are so many apps that provide this functionality, such as signal and whatsapp. Nobody in europe is using sms anyway, it’s just the US that has stuck to it for some bizarre reason
Hats off for the content
For some reason I’m super surprised. Mega cool!
An actual useful iPhone 15 pro video.. 👌👏👏🤝
Really great video!!
That's super cool for the iPhone. They're finally getting out of their shell.
It also supports Ethernet tethering via usb with a usb c to rj45 dongle!
Even shows up in the Dynamic Island when you connect it
Great test
love the stuff, think it'd be hilarious if you put a lightning port on the iphone 15!
Great Content.!
Maybe not the most realistic idea, but I'm hyped by the possibility to natively run the display as an external monitor with it's brightness and 120hz refresh rate, would be really cool to see it held up with an arm or sth close up to essentially emulate a 120hz 1440p-ish oled monitor.
iPad Pros already doing that years ago and still. iPhone is the last product that got Type-C
? I'm confused. No matter how much Usb-C you have, if the display controller doesn't have the ability to read usb-c (which basically no default controller has), it won't work
The best thing you can do is use a usb c video capture card, and an app like orion.
I don't know about the veracity of what 4crafter's saying, it's theoretically possible to decode the incoming video signal with the CPU and then display it. I don't think it can keep up with the high refresh-rate you're looking for, but I also don't think this whole thing would be any good :)
but it's not like "it won't work" or something, it's definitely plausible
@@AverageMichaelJordans i mean technically, yes. Practically, no. Apart from the software magic required to software decode the data from the usb c stream (which is causing problems for desktop pcs all over, be it game streaming without a NVFBC GPU, or even just passing the GPU output through a usbc hub, which currently requires you to add a cable from graphics card to motherboard), the USB C Controller just doesn't have the hardware (or at least software) to accept a displayport in. Not every USB C Controller is built alike and the standard is at least messy
@@4crafters597 I don't know about software magic, CPU video decoding is not some holy grail of programming problems. Like you're saying though, the controller likely won't have the stuff to handle the signal. You can't use a raw displayport signal, but even with a modern encoding standard the bitrate would have to be rough.
I haven't had many issues with sending video over USB on PC, but I haven't used it much either. I've got a hub that lets me send video over USB somewhere, if I find it I'll test it a little bit to see if there's any issue with sending video like you're saying.
Took them long but man I’m glad they got it right.
It's amazing how Apple seem to be impressed with your work with the iPhone 13 Pro model.
That click as you plugged the airpods in 🤗
Brilliant topic!
Didn’t think I would really use it for anything but it would be cool to have sd cards for certain trips or family things or something you just want to save for a while on something physical
Another fun thing about EX-FAT is that the data is both readable on Windows and MAC/iOS, however is less reliable (from my usage with exfat)
exFAT is the most annoying file system. I’ve had literal terabytes of files (entire directory trees) disappear from exFAT drives at random, cost me $100 for a Disk Drill license the first time it happened and my raw footage folder disappeared from my travel HDD. After a similar thing happened a few months later, I reformatted all my exFAT drives as either NTFS or HFS+, haven’t had a single issue since and the random performance got noticeably better to boot.
@@Frog-ko6uuit’s disappointing that Microsoft didn’t fix issues with their exFAT format. I thought it’d be more stable
You should test an external midi keyboard with garage band. Would love that to work
Nice, thanks.
That is very Futuristic, a usb type c not just a type c but a type 2.0 oh my god
It's usb 3.0
The base iPhone 15 models are USB 2.0
You can also use a USB C Network Adaptor and it will disable WiFi to use the Cable Connection. Discovered this lately while using my Phone on my Mac Dock where i have LAN connected.
Can you test a USB capture device or webcam with Capture Pro? (requires TestFlight) as well as a gigabit ethernet adapter? Thank you!
I always watch these videos with excitement and forget I still have the lightning port 😂
I love your channel I'm new
It's insane how the device connectivity now can be extended. Loving my iPhone 15 plus!
I've iPhone 14 Plus and likely wait for iPhone 16 Plus cuz it'll be high refresh rate ❤❤
Im sorry to tell you but you cannot do many of the things shown in the video because iphone 15 and 15+ only have usb 2.0. You cant do things like mirroring the screen via usb. Only the iphone 15 pro und pro max can do that. You still have the 23 years old usb 2.0 standard in your 1k$ phone.
Lol blud bought a 1.5k phone
@@sigmamale4147because he can
@@sigmamale4147 even worse
Hey man, great video. Next time you should also try an ethernet cable, I'd like to see if that works
Im excited to use my AR glasses without any adapter!
My favorite so far? Connecting my X100v directly to my iPhone and editing in Lightroom
feels satisfying
Nice content
wow everything works.
wow thats fkn amazing
i'm thinking about all the new game streaming capabilities on iphone when you connect ethernet, hdmi, charging and gaming controller
Thanks for your video.
You can also use:
- Network USB Adapters (at least Realtek ones work very well)
- USB C Yubikeys for OTP and FIDO2
The Multi-partitioned Yubikeys have a problem. They give the information to be a Keyboard, so the on-screen keyboard will not pop-up.
Thats very unfortunate.
A Lightning to USB c adapter will give charge, but no data transfer.
Change the usb c cable for a USB C 3.1 gen2 or better 3.2 gen 2x2 it might work ;)
Not a gamer but the graphics on iPhone games on TV looks great. It's like a very tiny but powerful game console.
Wow Ntfs drives access is cool.
Looks so great. But... it was already with Lightning xD Also, one guy tested it with CD drive, but it have not enough power for it (as well like 3.5 HDDs) Thank you for video! I also would like to see video in format "Turning your iPhone to working PC" or something like that.
Thanks John 🙏
But with lightening you needed bigger and more expensive adapters. You couldn't just run a lightning cable to DP monitor either.
@@RestoreTechnique
you sure could.
While most probably used docks there are lighning to HDMI/Displayport Cables that just work fine
@@GreenCinco12Official ah ok thanks. Yeah I've seen the HDMI ones before, but not DP.
hello i find that video very intresting can you do that with the s23 ?
I was excited to try to connect my lg 27 inch ultrafine 5k monitor to my iPhone 15 Pro but it doesn’t support thunderbolt.
This is exactly why I was saying that they should’ve made thunderbolt connectivity as an option or release an ultra series to match the ultra watch this year. USB-C still has its limitations.
I assume possibly this could be fixed with a software update, but knowing Apple not likely. It is interesting to see several CZcams reviewers market the external display as a new feature, yet apple’s own displays, do not support this feature.
I’m excited about charging the phone with the usb c port
This makes me finally consider the iPhone.
I know this works with Samsung Dex, but i wonder if you plug in the iPhone into a touch screen USB C external monitor if the touch would also work, would beat using an iPad as everything would be on your phone but on a bigger screen then
This reminds me of that phone that came out a few years ago that sorta worked as a windows 10 pc when connected to the dock. Honestly, I think it was ahead of its time, just held back my spec and devs. But if developers are willing to put higher-end software on these devices, this may be the future of all in one solutions.
Samsung already has that
@ Yeah, but do app developers support android like they do iOS? Genuine question. I don’t care for android for the majority of products, and I see most productivity software more geared towards the apple platform (granted it’s always iPad, but with how powerful phones are now, I don’t see why more productivity can’t be ported to iPhone for this purpose).
@@minecraftWithDanielD Samsung dex can use tablet apps in dex mode and alot of apps are like in the desktop
Android is innovation and the future. Apple keeps following
@@minecraftWithDanielD also you can even run a linux desktop image inside your phone to begin with.
I used that alot in school. Full fledged linux
@ But are tablet apps even good on Android? Most of the tablet discussions I see are always centred around ipad and windows, with android only occasionally been brought up in the audio space to be used with the Avid S1 or Dock.
Also, no point preaching about Linux to me. I am anti-Linux to my very core, lol
Nice video
Thanks
@@RestoreTechnique can you do a video on power bricks of different companies and watts , and their impact (heat , fast Charging) on Iphone 15 pro ?
The thing is, that USB-C port is only equivalent of iPad Air’s. maybe, on next iPhone, they’ll put PCIe controller instead to enable thunderbolt 4 (same with Mac/iPad Pro), then implement a somewhat limited edition of stage manager that’s only available on external display?
The A17 Pro chip in the device uses the same USB controller as the M1 and M2 so thunderbolt could’ve been enabled but Apple chose not to enable it.
is this sort of like samsung dex?
@@FlyByWire1 so the 15PM supports tb4 via software enabling?
@@kleptodathief3946 nearer to iPad’s stage manager on external display instead of Samsung Dex. Apple needs to still sell some iPads and Macs, so it needs to be limited only.
@@kleptodathief3946 Yes, it can support TB4, Apple just chose not to enable it. I'm assuming it's because most people don't need that kind of transfer speed on a phone. It makes sense on products like tablets and laptops which can take advantage of that high speed.
Thank you for the video
im wondering if an adapter will allow users of the ipad be able to back up devices if the display is not functional
Thanks
Does a wifi adapter works? It may requires some kernel driver/librairy but it can be cool specially if we can put the wifi card in monitor mode.
Can you use the iPhone for a week as a computer? How up the monitor kb&m and talk about the pros and cons?
A USB-C to Ethernet Adapter also works suprisingly.
Let's all welcome iPhone to 2014 things
🤭
Please answer... When you connected the iphone to the tv using a usb c hub or hdmi adapter, did the display on the tv seem less vivid to you? I have a very powerful 8k 30/4k 120 UGREEN Revodok Pro USB C Docking Station I use with my Macbook pro. When using my lg oled connected to my macbook pro the colours are sharp and vivid (wether through the hub or directly out the macbook pro hdmi port), however when i move the usb c hub over to my iphone, the colour and detail look very dull. Any thoughts? Thanks
It might be because of HDR. Also colour profile might be incorrect
Great test really. Cleared a lot of things. One thing that I noticed with the Mac as well is the issue to not write into ntfs or fat32 drives. I mean why? You are reading it then why now write it too? Explains how apple wanna force their custom formats on us.
Because having it as read only leaves very little chance of corruption. NTFS is a tricky file system to support. That's why exFAT is the preferred file system of choice for iOS, MacOS, ps5, android and to a lesser extent Linux as a whole, for being open source and being widely implemented, even on things such as smart TVs
It's really easy to mess up write. And i think you don't need a license to read, if im not mistaken.
@@ILoveWomen but linux supports ntfs.
@@darkfrozen1860 it does now, but it’s still very picky about it. For example, you have to have a full shutdown in order to mount a drive, because windows by default uses hibernation as shut down. I think you can force Linux to mount a hibernated drive but any file changed that way can lead to corruption. And about 10 years ago (though my memory is foggy), I think you couldn’t mount it as writable, but I could totally be wrong
Great insight! What's the reason that you went with the 15 Pro and not the 15 Pro Max?
Phone size and price
That thumbnail is wild
that thumbnail is mad! if you know you know 😉
Cool.
Impressive
wonderful thumbnail that is
Great now make the USB-C port to lightning🤓👆
If I'm able to, I want to create a desktop setup that is powered by an iPhone.
Plug in a hub that has the equivalent to all of a desktop's port selection to the iPhone, plug in the monitor, mouse and keyboard to the hub, and you got yourself a desktop.
Want to use your iPhone as a computer? Plug it to the hub and you're good to go! Want to use it back as a phone? Just disconnect it from the hub!
The only problem is probably the orientation of the home screen being portrait.
This is what I called a real pro phone. Any iPhone with lightning is not pro.
In my country, any businessman with an iPhone always carry an android device for work.
USB C makes a leap difference, thanks EU!
Great video, thanks so much. I’d like to use a USB external mic and wired headphones (lag free) for shooting video like I do now on Samsung Galaxy A72 with a 3.5mm headphone jack. Or shoot to external USB while using wired headset or mic. Would there be a hub to do it? Curse the removal of ports and removable internal storage!
Hub for Nintendo Switch used in video works so i guess the iPhone support usb hubs of any configuration. There are many cheap usb+3.5 hubs for ultrabooks so they most likely will just work
Connect the phone to a USB hub, connect the mic and a USB-3.5mm adapter to the hub, and the headphones to the 3.5mm socket. Or you can probably get a USB-C hub that has a 3.5mm socket built in.
Is it true that some authorities forced Apple to make this changes and to be more "tech friendly"?
Always giving us useful information! Thanks mate!
do you mean with changes the USB C port?
If yoh mean with the usb c port then its the EU that did it
Thank the European Union for forcing Apple to use USB-C
The problem is now, you can't tell which cable with USB-C ends are what. They all have different capabilities.
Are you living inside a cave ?
What app did you use for retro games!
Just to be sure : at 1:45 : can you actually see some files (and not just photos as shown) from the android phone ON THE iPhone (I guess using the Files application ?). Thanks !
It's MTP so most likely yes. I remember connecting iPhone to the android and all i saw were photos (PTP mode)
Try making a USB to SD hub on a case, this way you could had done the first iphone expansion mod ever
How about USB 2 speed of the standard iPhone? I love photography but I decided to just get Sony A7RV with 70-200mm F4 macro OSS G II and 16-35mm F4 PZ and one cheap F0.95 50mm lenses and just use the iPhone as pocket computer and simple photography and videography, can it do all these you shown in this video other than play these triple A games? I will get the upcoming 16 inch M3 Max MacBook Pro to game because these kind of games better game on bigger screen and I really want to play Death Stranding finally, hope the upcoming MGS remake will able to play on it too!
It can do everything shown here, it's just that any data transfer speeds are usb 2 speed.
I'm not sure if it has been asked, but can it run on a high refresh display, such as a 1080p 144hz monitor?
Use a borescope inspection camera, so it will be a viewfinder.
Hello , I hope everything is going smoothly for you. I have a puzzling situation to discuss. I recently bought Apple Type C headphones, and they function perfectly with my iPhone 15 and Android device Mi 11X. However, I'm facing an issue with compatibility on Mi 11X Pro, despite both phones being from the same brand and having the same USB output. Could you help me understand the reason behind this? Additionally, I'm contemplating purchasing a Nothing Phone 2, so I would appreciate it if you could check the compatibility with these headphones on the Nothing phone as well, if possible. and could you explain why this headphone is compactible with some android phones and some are not, even in same brand.
I expected scarlet fire coming from those buds mate
I didn't get the DankPods reference until I googled the song 😄
I havent even had any idea that a typical USB-C Android can utilize so many USB OTG devices. Glad Apple finally joined the USB-C gang.
Depends on the USB version and power supply (in case of hard drives).
I am windering that a bigger c-hub is working with ethernet and all features at once? Like video output, charging, several usb a device, sd card reader, and ethernet connection
You didnt try usb headset i mean like razer usb maybe kraken kitty using otg or another method but good video
