Making a USB-C iPhone 13 from scratch is no small feat and you've nailed it. The dedication, precision and creativity you put into this project are commendable. iPhone 15 has finally used USB-C after he made his iPhone 13 USB-C creation
The precision that this needs is astounding. I am so surprised you can solder such small parts like that and your CNC skills are better than my actual CNC.
Does anyone know why exactly the fast charging only works one way and is not reversible? Im assuming it has something to do with the resistor setup but im kinda unsure. Is it possible to fix that reversible fast charging problem or is it impossible with how the lightning port works?

This video is gonna go viral. Beautifully done sir👌🏻And the way you enlarged the charge port hole on the case is so perfect it looks like it was laser cut. Nice job!!
@@RestoreTechnique Hi, I really enjoyed the video but I'm kinda curious about why exactly the fast charging only works one way and is not reversible? Im assuming it has something to do with the resistor setup but im kinda unsure. Is it possible to fix that reversible fast charging problem or is it impossible with how modding the lightning port to work with usbc means its impossible to make the fast charging reversible?
Are you saying this because you think this is the first time anyone’s done this? Did you really think a 15 minute video about changing the charging port on a phone would go viral?
I was watching the part where you soldered the connections onto the USB C port thinking "hmm, maybe I could do this" and then looked at my phone and realized how little space that actually is. The skill needed to do that without shorting anything is nothing short of amazing.
Your'd be surprised how well the solder mask works. There are automated soldering setups that just immerse the whole thing in liquid solder, it doesn't come out as one big blob, the resist (the often green coating) repels the solder. Look up drag soldering SMD.
new video: I made a Lightning iPhone 15
Woah dude. This is more than some half-ass homemade DIY fun project, this thing is fucking professional. I love that you didn't make compromises, I hope it gets the attention it deserves. Nice work man.
no real need, you will get iphones with usb c in a few years, because EU demands it
@@majstealth and just a note to anyone who comes here to reply to this guy saying that they'll go portless: no they won't, the law itself explicitly says that only devices that are too small to fit a usb-c in aren't obligated to have the port so yeah they aren't allowed to.
This is what we’re waiting for the new iPhone 15 release in September 12th of 2023. It would have the same USB-C cable as the 13 you’ve modified. Instead of using the original lightning cable from older iPhones, this cable would be required for couple of reasons and I like to see the full release for the 2023 Apple Event, and your engineering is awesome!

Apple: "switching our iPhones to use USB-C is going to cost billions in R&D"
This guy:
Of course it costs billions… the whole production line has to converted entirely for millions of phones… what’s your point?
@@SkyzzV_ The fact that Apple is using that as an excuse to keep lightning port when they as a company is already worth trillions, already invested tens of billions every year for designing new models. Thus the argument of cost of changing port has no place especially when some hobbyist on CZcams is able to build one and the fact that they already use USB-C on iPad Pro and MacBooks.
Here we are today with a iPhone 15 with USB C
You should make the first lightning-port Iphone 15.
thats basically just the iphone 14 because there is no real distinguishing features other than the port ;-;
Hey! I’m the guy who made the first usb-c iPhone. I enjoyed watching your video and am glad you could replicate the concepts of my video on the iPhone 13, with your own twist and originality on it.
Some comments:
03:17 I’m not sure if you use some heat to remove that glue, but it decreases the chances of ripping/breaking components underneath
05:31 I’m a bit confused why you needed two 5.1kOhms resistors. R2, sure, and that would limit the charging speed (no fast charging) when the USB-C is plugged in one of the two ways. I see you mention that at the end of the video. But I don’t believe R1 is needed.
Hey Kenny Pi, thanks for watching!!
Yeah I don't think I was using any heat to remove that glue on the flex, even though I did use heat when removing glue on the C94. But unlike the iPhone X charging flex, it's got those tiny components butted right up against the ports pins, so I don't know how I was going to desolder the port really.
I have seen many people add usb-c to various devices and use a 5.1k resistor on both CC pins. Wasn't sure if it was necessary tbh 😕
Thanks for your great video. Yours was definitely a better build internally with everything on the flexible circuit board, way cleaner, and also less obtrusive around the battery.
I originally started this project at the end of November, trying to get something made by the end of December or January, so i tried a simpler approach, but the project dragged on and on and life got in the way. Was tempted to try and get fast charging working both ways, but decided to just call it. ✌️
cmiiw, but I believe those 5.1k resistors are for type-c to type-c connections and let the connected device (in this case a computer) know it's not a host device, if not you'll need to use a type a to type c cable for it, I only work with custom keyboard PCBs but that's all I know
I think that the only one way fast charging is perfect: just do a dot on the side of the cable that charges fast the phone, so you'll have a fast charging mode for the day and a slow charging mode for the night when you don't need crazy speed
The disrespect given to the lightning cable box. Thanks Josh. Edit - That bonus at the end! 😂
title:predicting the iphone 15
You absolute mad lad. You installed a type C charging port in a modern iphone without having to resort to any tools that are particularly expensive. Your "CNC" skills are next-level, and I am genuinely envious of both your skills and the finished result. I wish I could pay you to do this to my phone, but I doubt I could afford it. Chances are I'll have to wait for Apple to make the switch to type C due to EU regulations. Here's hoping they actually make the switch!
Apple is likely to remove the charging port altogether and use only wireless charging just to spite the EU.
Imagine going to the apple store and saying "Yeah I need a USB-C cable for my phone."
The dumb part is that they have those. It's lighting on one end and USB-C on the other. They also have C to C for iPads.

He just innovated more than tech companies have in recent years.
Being an engineer at heart, I love when someone calls out a big tech like Apple w/ examples, for their incredible stubbornness that only serves the dark-pattern of locking to their absurd "lightning cable" standard.
Crazy that Apple, a company that takes pride in creating the best product for its users, argued "regulatory action stifles innovation" when EU had to force them to move to USB-C. This example clearly shows that they could put a USB-C without any major design compromise.
Do better Apple!
Regulatory action may stiffle innovation, but when was the last time Apple innovated a new charging cable?
Appreciated sir type c way far superior from old git grandad Apple iPhone user.
@@tombaker9341 the one thing lightning is still better is damage resistance. USBC has the contacts in the middle on a thin plate. This plate can get damaged when cleaning and break.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m super impressed that you can go online and have 10 little custom pcbs made to order!
I think the real reason they can do this in affordable price is that they gather a lot of these small orders and put them together on one big pcb to minimize material loss and time spent on each pcb.

It’s either coming in 2023 or never (they might switch to only wireless charging)
USB-C might come to iPhones after the notorious EU law will be put in place
It's coming sooner than most people think. The EU will make usb-c a mandatory standard.
@Carl Gunderson Yeah. And you seem to misunderstand how much expensive it is to have 2 lines of production for the same product. So if a continent worth 800 millions of potential customers obliges you to do something, you do it. And generally it applies worldwide. Heck, California could pass a law like this and it would also apply worldwide. It already happened okce
@Carl Gunderson I doubt Apple would only make them for the European market, in fact I suspect that they will only make usb-c devices and phase out thunderbolt
