I have heard many performances of the Tchaikovsky trio, and this is one of the few that brings chills to my spine. What a beautiful, wistful performance. I also love the 1950s quality of the recording. Thank you so much for posting such a treasure by three of the greatest masters of the chamber music genre.

I can't quite see how this recording can ever be surpassed. It's not just the extraordinary virtuosity of all three musicians (and Tchaikovsky certainly demands that, too) but also their perfect and shared grasp of the music, particularly in the variation movement. This interpretation brings out perfectly that movement's diverse moods: alternately lugubrious, full of Romantic pathos, or playful, even whimsical, or again austere, or dancelike etc. It's like Tchaikovsky decided to offer a compressed history of musical idioms from the past 200 years within a single movement: Bach, Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. This is consummate musicianship enhanced by a warm, intimate, and slightly raspy recording sound that transports one back to the 1950s.

Great - The best musicians at the time playing together a wonderful music. the only interpretation that can equal them is made by Kogan, Rostropovich and gilels.
