I love your work. You obviously are an expert. You don’t have to continue to put down the original deck builder throughout the whole video. It takes away from your purpose and overwhelms your skill and talent. When you have a tremendous gift as you do, think of kindness for folks who might not be gifted in your area of expertise.

Hello, Want to compliment you. My husband and I love your work. We love how you treat or keep up with your tools. We love the way you teach your son and correct him in a nice fatherly/professional manner.
Now what we want to share is please stay professional. When you are saying the owner did not know what he was doing, you could easily say, [I’m not sure the home owner knows this, but the best way to do this is . . .]. You could also, say, this type of work could be dangerous, but don’t say the negative thing. You sound so good and friendly until you say, they didn’t know what they were doing (and you are probably right), but I love it when you just show us how to correct errors, notes to take to prepare for the project, things to think about and and we love why you choose certain wood, etc.
You are the best and we really enjoy you. I believe you will get more and more and more likes and the thumbs down will be even less. Have a blessed day.

Jeff I am totally blown away by what you did with this deck. Thinking back to about 25 years ago, I was that guy - that homeowner without a clue who put a deck on the back of our house. My wife was right in there with me, grunting and shoving boards and carrying buckets of screws. Yes, I did use screws, You pointed out so many things that made me want to hide my face. But it wasn't all bad. Much to my amazement I did a lot of things right too. The one major thing I did different was the direction of the 5/4 decking. My deck is 30-feet x 12-feet so I did my frame to allow the boards to start at and move away from the house. I bought 12-foot decking so there wasn't any waste. But I did cut between 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch off all the ends to make the deck edge straight.
Anyway, thanks for this awesome episode and for taking me down memory lane. I'll never look at my deck quite the same again lol. Cheers.

We just tore off a deck that one-ups this one for poor construction. Not only did they not use corrosion-resistant screws, they also surfaced it with fence boards instead of proper decking. Forget a 400-pound man, this deck was taken down by an 11-year old with a crowbar. Oh, and they had installed the air conditioner on it! Love that I can learn how to do this stuff right!

It was asked previously but I didn't see an answer. How was the corner post for the railing tied into the existing 4x4 that was structural? It would be the post furthest from the door on the right hand side/front of deck.

In the last 40 yrs of building , I couldn't never figure out , WHY don't we pay as much attention to the Bones of the Deck as we do the Skin ? So in recent yrs. I've started Bringing the Lumber out on the Job and spreading it out for a couple days and the coating it for a couple days with Thompson water seal trying to get 2 coats on . Manufactured decking is so expensive , I also let my decking and rails everything about the deck , lay on saw horses and let the sun work its magic to evaporate the extreme moisture , and the again , a couple of good coats of Thompson ! Especially to the sides and underneath of the lumber . Yes it takes longer ,,, BUT ,,, I've went back yrs. later and it looks great and new,,, Bees don't build under it , spiders don't live under it and before I close it up I throw a Box of " Moth balls under it ,,, Snakes HATE that .

You did a wonderful job with this renovation and I really enjoy your channel, but I do have 3 questions:
    1) did you pick up that mat or did you leave it there too? Half way through the video, once the decking was delivered, it was still in place?
    2) what did you do about that split in the wood on the right side, inside or the railing leading up the stairs?
    3) Why did you not add the drink top to the left side of the railing?
