    I have an enlarged amagdala, I had to get 3 MRI scans over 3 years to see if it was growing and the doctor's said I experienced so much trauma as a child that my amagdala grew larger to cope with the stress.

    This is so interesting. I have ADHD and BPD. I’ve always theorized (based on my own experience) that people with ADHD who go through trauma and unable to process it healthily develop disorders similar to BPD. I’ve always been strange and sensitive, but as I got older stress became unbearable and maladaptive behaviors began to develop. Wellbutrin has helped me regulate my mood and think before I act. I still have symptoms but you are right about learning healthy adaptive behaviors.

      Your comment jumps out at me because I know a young woman with both ADHD and BPD. She told me she has ADHD, but I don't think she knows she has BPD. She absolutely does -- I've studied this subject intensely for a couple months, and I'm 100% sure she has it. She unmistakably has 5 of the 9 symptom criteria, and I'd say she's about in the middle of the severity spectrum.
      She takes Concerta for her ADHD, but of course nothing for her BPD. Your comment is the first I've heard about Wellbutrin. Because she doesn't know she has BPD (or if she does, she's hiding it from me), she isn't taking any medicine specifically for it. I'm worried about her -- she's only 19, and she's getting worse. She's in for a lifetime of pain and confusion if she doesn't get real help. If you don't mind me asking, have you tried Concerta, and if so, has it helped with either of your conditions? Even though it's my understanding that it's not for BPD, she does seem to be better when she's taking Concerta. Once she goes off it though, it's like she's a different person (in a very bad way).

      i have bpd n adhd n am trying to see if i’m autistic as well. but being on wellbutrin and abilify has helped me as well. for bpd i had all 7 symptoms and scored severe for awhile. i realized i needed to get sober and having a good support system can help.

      I've been thinking a lot about the same, the connection between ADHD and BPD. I'm also curious about how frequently people with BPD might have underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed ADHD. It was also nice to learn (and feel) that DBT therapy can be helpful for ADHD.

      I think both BPD and ADHD are linked through trauma (and perhaps genetic factors). The all encompassing disorder is CPTSD.

    As I understand it, oxytocin can lead to dopamine release, and deficiencies in the oxytocin system are found in people with BPD (both in oxytocin receptor genes, and in the level of oxytocin in your blood). Cortisol also plays a role here, as levels fluctuate differently in those with BPD. Cortisol toxicity damages the dopamine system, and oxytocin reduces cortisol levels (from memory).
    My question is: could the dopamine issue be a downstream effect?
    I can provide the papers that suggested these things. I spent a lot of time looking for a treatment that worked for my TRD. I found out that ADHD can lead to an anhedonic depression, which relates to dopamine issues. I asked my psychiatrist about pramipexole (sifrol), a dopamine agonist. Absolutely changed my life.
    I've also got a close family member recovering from BPD. Your videos have been very helpful in giving me an understanding of their struggles.

    The real issue here is no one talks about is not the why to the personality disorder but the reason why you think the way you do ,much of the cluster A are to do with separation induvidualisation as a baby which causes psychosis ,and persecution

      I feel if there was more education out there on why we end up here, there'd be more compassion and less judgement and discrimination.

    This is fascinating - here in the UK if you go see your GP, irrespective of what you say about your mental health issue, an antidepressant such as sertraline will be prescribed. No exploration. I once said to the doctor I have been this way all of my life since a teen....their reply, oh you won't have, it just feels like that. Er nope, it is like that!!
    I would say for me depression has been episodic but I live with running anxiety everyday.
    I love to make other people laugh and feel loved - this somehow makes me feel better inside.
    But am I happy on the inside? Hmm, I am grateful, know I am fortunate, loved and supported. Am I happy? - this is hard for me to define.
    I am curious about the concept of low levels or blocked dopamine receptors.
    I studied neurophysiology back in the day....I may have to get my books out......

      And happiness always will be hard to define, especially if it's supposed to be some sort of feeling, some warm and bubbly thing, that you just feel all day long lolol like some endless dopamine hit! 🤯
      come on that's not even possible, and it would look different for everyone.
      Why is it that when these doctors say something no one even questions it?
      Want to hear a secret? Most people are walking around feeling kind of numb...... most of the day! They have to be a bit numb (completely set their emotions on a back burner) in order to get the business of getting work done..... Done!
      Most people feel slightly bored, fatigued, a bit irritable, uncertain..... And on rare occasions (birth of a child, starting a new business, getting something published for the first time, etc) TRULY happy.
      That is literally the emotional state of humans on most days. Maybe once or twice a year they get completely angry over something.... Like someone backing into them, in a parking lot.
      That's actually the normal emotional state of people. But people who go to therapy seem to think that everyone else, anyone else, is just happy happy, full of joy all day long..... EVERYDAY. And that if for some reason you're not just over filled with joy and gratefulness just because you wake up in the morning....... There must be something wrong lol
      For most of you the only thing wrong with you, is that you openly admit to feeling the way everyone else is pretending they don't feel.
      In a world of fake joyful lives, conveyed in the form of selfies and self aggrandizing lies.......on Facebook and Instagram......
      The real problem here...... is that you're just not a self delusioned liar!
      What treatment really is, is to teach you to stuff all your emotions down, do not react to being harmed by others and just be a better liar........ like everyone else!

    Yes! Medication is only part of it, therapy is so so important. Specifically group therapy has really worked for my bpd.

      @@rarepurposereadingsllc2723 Hey! Thanks for asking, it’s going super well so far. There’s been a few complications in terms of attending. I’ve just started a new job and can’t make group sessions so I’m now doing 1 to 1 which I’m really sad about. Being involved in the group, as sad as it was hearing that other people are feeling the same as you it’s also so validating and reassuring that you’re not alone and absolutely bat shit crazy. I’ve grown up in and am still in a very invalidating environment around people who don’t want to understand or recognise that I’m unwell. The group has helped so much with all of that. The DBT skills we have spoken about are so helpful but they’re one of those things where you need to practice and practice, it’s not going to happen overnight you know? Yeah super helpful so far and I’m so grateful to be receiving this kind of help. Unfortunately it’s not accessible for many people :(

    This is great insight, Dr. Fox, thank you. I recently ran into a situation where I injured my back and had to stop exercising. Once I did, my depression symptoms and BPD flared up, seemingly due to the lack of dopamine. I had been doing a cold Shower in the morning to get that initial release, then exercise at different times of the day to keep the dopamine going. As I'm becoming more active, I'm feeling better, but such a drastic change was scary to experience, and have all these raw nerves exposed again. All the best to you and everyone on here! 💚

    Have you ever looked into L-tyrosine and 5HTP? For natural dopamine and seritonin protection? They've been really helpful with my pdd, which gives me just enough of an uplift(and normal appetite back)that i have the motivation for the lifestyle habbits that keep me sane paired with them.

      most people with BPD are of the quiet, predominantly inwardly directed subtype, but thanks to harmful stereotypes we go under the radar. I have the odd outburst, but generally I take it out on myself.

    I love your content, I am learning so much. I was wondering if you could make a video about how relationships between two people with BPD could play out. I believe I have quiet borderline traits and my partner fits the criteria for classic BPD. I feel we really understand eachother but once one of us splits it is the worst feeling In the world, I fear he wont ever come back and I know he feels the same and it feels like death and neither of us can bare it. I usually tend to attract narcissistic partners as mates, so this is a different experience and one which i prefer as he's so much more sensitive, loving and deeper than any of my previous partners. But as much as I love him, sometimes I feel so overwhelmed and fearful because of the push and pull dynamic, that I just want to end it but I can't let go. I am exhausted, have put on more weight than I desire, and even had to take a break from work. But I've never felt so loved before, especially when things are good. And even when they're not great he will always come back and will apologise and acknowledge his part in conflicts as will I. Does this sound like a typical BPD with BPD relationship?

    One of my strengthening coping skills was I personally loved life no matter what my mental state was. Just seeing the morning light gave me a boost of hope and joy. For years I was assigned to work with a woman that had a difficult personality. It was very exasperating. I come to loath my time with her. It took a few years for us to work together in a mentally healthy routine. We no longer work together. At present I still don't have that natural love of life. Can't seem to find it again. I will assume I have a lack of dopamine. How can I get that love of life again?

      This might sound really odd, but look for a new competition? What I´m hesitant to face is that the severe internal struggle with my family in the past might have prevented me from feeling a lack of idk something. If you were lucky to overcome the exhausting work relationship and then just glad and reliefed for the next years, maybe the complete loss of this aspect needs an replacement by sth that you chose yourself?
      Just an idea, but this reminds me a bit of the really confusing emptiness that I feel.

      Im sorry you went through that but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you now have a dopamine deficiency. There could be many reasons why that experience marked a change in you. And when it comes to mental health it’s seldom just one single isolated thing. Everything is more complex than that.

    All I can say is medication that increases dopamine levels and help BDP symptoms--it decreases bpd responses and in turn help to develop appropriate responses, therefore, developing better habits. Thanks for the great video.

    I have ADHD and BPD. Today, I took Concerta for the first time! I am a totally different person. I wish I knew this earlier! My rumination is gone, I am less sensitive and depressed.

      I second that. I got triangulated by my BPD partner, and it destroyed our relationship. I was furious, of course, and cut all ties with her. It's the most hurtful thing ever, and there's no way to undo it. Of all the things people with BPD do, triangulation is the worst IMHO.

    very deep and very grey area discution i like how you make mention of not to fall into black and white thinking (splitting) I'm apart of a bpd supourt group on facebook that i run into the misconception that splitting is an anger outburst on your partner and i allwasy make sure the insight that its not always that to keep them focused on the goal.... so awesome you put that in there ..... this is so hard for me cuz as you said its common in depresstion (i have major depression) and some medical conditions that include traumatic brain injury ( i have multiple sclerosis so i deff have brain damage lol ) they have linked depression and anxiety as the most common comorbiditys with ms and probably for this reason ..... not to mention i feel my lesion on my temporal lobe has a connection to a lot of my emotional reactions as the most common i read about are ( persistent talking,aggressive behavior, heightened or lack of sex drive) there more but these are simmler to my mental health and they do see the temporal lobe as the connection to depresstion in ms .... so your right not to overly connect it just to bpd ..... but maybe as all things when it comes to personauty disorders this type of issue can exsatebate the symptoms more and make them harder to control .... very informative video

    It was expensive, but, I was 300 pounds at 5 foot 4 and the medicine made me resemble a Beach Ball
    Too embarrassed by the weight, I hired a yoga teacher to come to my home 3 times a week. With all the government handouts for those of us on disability, we can pay the price. The choice yours alone. It absolutely kept same and improved

    Brain chemicals go all round the body too - you can feel depression in your gut sometimes

    I came off of Max antidepressant after 30 years and I feel that they just made me more passive. They did not help me deal with things so I think that’s a good point that you made.

    You're one of my absolute favorite Dr. I'm frustrated because I have impulsivity because at the age of 4 years old I was diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder which causes impulsivity yet mental health professionals don't take that into consideration and so I'm diagnosed with BPD, Major depression, anxiety, and now a Psychiatrist thinks I have Bipolar 1...when are people gonna start taking me seriously for once? I'm annoyed. Plus the last job I was at my manager was crazy and passive aggressive so after one day I left and never went back. Now, once again, I'm afraid to work. I'm sober the last thing I took was a 300mg gabapentin from my ex he's like here take this. My new Psychiatrist wouldn't give it to me because he say's it's a placebo affect okay if it is then why am I able to keep a damn job for at least 6 months? When I'm off it I can't keep a job at all so now I have to pay him to get gabapentin (pay my ex unless he's willing to give me one on his own). Also my ex has ADHD so it can be a very struggling relationship. Glad you mentioned all of this though I can't focus on anything, my coffee intake has gone up, I've had gastro crap going on GERD one week, Hives the next, then a phantom period that came after my last period 2 weeks ago and I never have two periods in one month and I'm 38 years old. Just so damn annoyed at this point. I'm not doing any drugs at all which is good only 2 cups of coffee or one a day. I want to see an actual dr not a Psychiatrist at this point. I want them to do a brain scan so I know what is going on.

    Are you saying basically therapy is what is best for BPD, meds are just a band aid.
    I have been diagnosed BPD so I am trying to understand how to control and maintain

      yeah, there's no one medication that addresses BPD, since it's a series of maladaptive coping mechanisms rather than a specific lack of one neurotransmitter. So we tend to get tranquillizers, SSRIs, to address the symptoms rather than the root cause. Talking therapies and skill based treatment like DBT help more, since it addresses the lack of emotional validation and gives us tools to manage it better.

    I've always been plagued with the misfortune of anxiety, mainly social anxiety.
    But it wasn't until I used marijuana during the pandemic that my mental health issues worsened.
    I've been living in a paranoid state since the high. It looks as though there has been some rewiring to my cognition.
    I now spend most of my time worried and thinking that people are talking about me.
    I've become so untrusting that I've become distant towards family and friends.
    I struggle to sustain romantic relationships due to obsessing about the possibility of my partner cheating on me.
    The most recent girl I dated broke up with me become I'd frequently accuse her of cheating even when I had no evidence, which I think exhausted her.
    I have this proclivity to interpret people's remarks, facial expressions, actions as either negative or designed to somehow hurt. As a result I become combative & hostile
    As a factor of this psychological problem I'm afflicted with, I've become unable to feel love or affection. All my relationships are practically emotionless.
    Another thing is that, I've been questioning my sexuality since the pandemic which is something I find traumatic because I've hadn't had issues with my sexuality through my life until 2020.
    I obsessively spend most of my days trying to discern if I'm really heterosexual or if somehow there's been a base-level shift in who I am.
    Other experiences or challenges in having
    - Constantly Daydreaming
    - Feeling hated by those around me.
    - Irritability
    - Hostility
    It's almost like I've morphed into someone else other than my inherent self.
    Can someone help me make sense of all this?

      I had a strange reaction to weed as well….it will go away or you just enhanced a part of yourself you already were. My social anxiety was actually way heavier in middle school before high school weed.
      The best advise I can give:
      Easy on the weed maybe just at night to sleep.
      Go jogging 3 times a week at least. Get ur heart rate up and sweat.
      Sleep consistent hours most nights
      You see the world not as things are, but how you are. Think of how YOU want to see things and how you want to feel, do not go look for “truths” from the outside world
      Understand that you are living to be the best version of your self, not someone else’s self.
      Find comfort that whatever you decide to be, it’s ok just be the best version of that for yourself.
      Don’t require that you please people, but look to always have a positive impact on people around you. Not everyone will be compatible with your style, Focus on those who are.
      Be water. Adapt to the world around you as it happens and move with it. Do not try to force the world to be only what you feel it should be

      The paranoia and anxiety are due to taking weed. It affects the amygdala and hence you become extremely anxious and you get negative thoughts About yourself which leads eventually to paranoia..weed can enhance the senses but too much of it you become hyper aware of every detail in a fearful way. Detox from the weed. Get CBD to help if you can and once you stop those symptoms will go away.

    I need some clarification. As I understand it, antipsychotics decrease dopamine in the brain, but you’re saying psychosis in schizophrenia is caused by too little dopamine. So, why would someone take an antipsychotic which decreases dopamine if they really need to increase it?

    I have BPD and Wellbutrin is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor l, I've been on Wellbutrin and it has helped immensely with motivation, energy, etc. I feel much better.

      @@mariahconklin4150 it took 4 months at the max dose to see anything for me. So about 8 months total before I saw improvement. I'm so sorry you can't find anything to help. I do still have BPD symptoms but my life has improved some overall because of my energy level, motivation, etc.

    This sounds familiar, I might be dealing with a dopamine deficiency. As one with BPD and CPTSD, major depression disorder, and anxiety,. I can see a place for deficiency with dopamine. How to whittle it out?

      L-dopa, 5-htp, tyrosine (dopamine & serotonin precursors) & benfotiamine (B1 Thiamine) for the anxiety. Most people in the western world have a B1 deficiency, and if you look at the literature for the laundry list of B1 def symptoms, Anxiety is right near the top of the list. Does caffeine/hangovers cause you to have anxiety? There ya go

    One of the side affects of Wellbutrin is motion sickness. For those the may want to know. I take effexor because it has serotonin reuptake inhibitor but it also has the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor only problem is is when I don't get it refilled properly yeah there's lovely side effects with that ended up having to go to the hospital because I got dehydrated because I got sick from the withdrawal

    Definitely has to be a factor in OCPD (MM is one of the only ways I can get things done without excessive planning). Although I suspect I may have excessive GABA because I react really badly to most medications that increase GABA in the short term and all medications that increase GABA in the long term. When I say badly, I mean paradoxical benzodiazepine like reaction in the short term, or severe depression (I don't get non-situational depression), severe OCD, and migraines in the long term. Fun!

    I really think all these symptoms can be beaten by doing things you know make you a better person. Fixing your car or things around the house, doing favors for others, going to the gym or exercising, doing a competitive sport, combat sports, etc. All these things manifest as satisfaction in your mind. Medication can only do so much, but in the western world, its so over relied on. Writing things down helps a lot too. When i went through a mentally devastating break up, i would write facebook posts about how i felt and what i wanted to tell the world but then make it visible to only me. I would write about how i had a good day or how much i missed this girl, whatever was my honest feeling that day. This is a hard hard battle to go through sometimes but we are gifted in many ways. We are great feelers, story tellers, and supporters. There is a lot we can achieve if we are motivated enough to live the lifestyle that we decide to implement.

    I healed myself; I won't say how, but I healed myself with a hyper-connective substance. Do you think the reformation of negative trauma responses healed me? Or does hyper-connectivity possibly fix the receptors? Just a thought? I was SEVERE with BPD for 40 years. Now i am ok. Really really ok. The bpd is not gone, but i can manage it and thrive

    Dr Fox.....do you know much about glue and the effects it might have on a person....I used to sniff it for over a year in my teens nearly every day......I am 56 now and was diagnosed BPD at age 51.....Would that affect my dopamine levels?Trying to find info on it.....thanks

      I will depend upon the glue that you were sniffing. In some cases these treat actual holes in your brain they can be visible on a CAT scan or an MRI. That’s in some cases and not all. You may want to consult with a neurologist to be sure.

    Can childhood trauma decrease dopamine levels? Could red light therapy helmets/devices help simulate dopamine receptors? I’ve been using red light therapy for my hair, body, and skin and I feel more energy now. I lost some weight, and also don’t feel so down anymore.

    Current research suggests that trauma triggers a BPD state that then causes impulsive behaviours, secondary psychopathy, which will trigger impulsive behaviour, possibly to seek out dopamine. Question is does low dopamine cause BPD or does BPD cause low dopamine or are they both a result of trauma?

    Usually iron malabsortion is cause by malabsortion such in celiac disease and Chron s disease.

    For the past two years I have been experiencing this!.
    Having trouble recalling recent past events ... I feel lost, not being able to concentrate at all!!
    As I talk, as I walk, as I do little things- I don't feel it anymore...!! As if I'm living in a Fog... Finding it difficult to correlate, dealing with constant headaches!! Having psychotic symptoms too... It's worse than depression...
    When I go to the doctor, they prescribe medicines which are of little to no help!!
    Treating BPD is becoming tougher with these added symptoms... I don't know what I am going through

    My mom had BPD, she recently passed from Parkinson's. Her mother, whom I never met, also had some undiagnosed mental issue and also died from a Parkinson's induced fall and subsequent brain bleed. The scary thing I'm looking at, though I don't have BPD, I have taken Zyban to quit smoking and felt awesome on it. Until they had to scape me off the ceiling every five minutes because it made me so jumpy. Just makes me wonder if that genetic component to BPD really is a hereditary dopamine problem. Scary.

      It’s more environmental than hereditary. Aka, children of parents end up with the condition not because of their genetics but because of the environment they were raised in, what they learned and how they were taught (indirectly) to cope with life

    I have very low dopamine levels because of my trauma I got into a bad bicycle accident when I was a child my friend was riding my bike I got in the way and the tire went around and smacked me in the head ever since then because of my trauma for my past gotten worse because of what I grew up in was my step grandmother and my grandfather because all those two did was argue and fight day-in-and-day-out it was never a quiet home it was always chaos them to always targeted why did they do that I will never understand and ever since then 40 years of my life was took from me my motor skills are off my memory fades out on and off since I left treatment at life stream I don't care for them feelings I told my husband Doug that I feel like a balloon because every time I get the feelings I have to hold on to something why is it like that ?

    I struggle sm w this. Idt it'll take a dr to see i struggle w dopamine deficiencies haha. It seems as if ive lost all hope in life, just being stressed, anxious or depressed. It's either I'm super depressed or super anxious and i feel tired all the time despite sleeping enough and hungry always despite eating more n gaining weight.
    I try to use the dbt skill PLEASE MASTER which is to take care of ure physical health by taking meds for ure body n mind (if prescribed).
    Next LATHER - rinse, take care of hw u look by spending even a bit of time to tend to ure physical looks... EAT a balanced diet, nt too much or too lil, avoiding foods that make u emotional like too much chocolates or junk food.
    AVOID mood-altering substances including vape and weed, get 6-hrs of SLEEP that u feel good enuff and lastly get at least 20 Mins of EXERCISE in...
    And oh the actual last one of course is to build MASTERy....set goals fr what u wna achieve and become good at whatever craft u choose by reaching those small goals everyday and practicing everyday... An example wud be dancing fr me :).
    It's honestly hard and sometimes u fall off track a bit bt most days I'm doin okay, even tho sometimes I legit have to force myself to do these basic, rudimentary things and cn barely get outta bed.. 😅
