  • Hi I'm Dan and I'm cycling from Alaska to Argentina! This video tells the story of the first 2 weeks of my journey cycling 500 miles down the incredibly remote James Dalton Highway in the Arctic Circle in Alaska. The Dalton was an amazing start to my trip and tested me in so many ways.

    Hi Dan! We met you at Rancheria Falls in the Yukon. Bob and I were RVing up to Alaska from Vancouver, BC (home is South Carolina). Just watched this first episode (in Wasilla, Alaska, north of Anchorage). FANTASTIC JOB video recording, editing, music, pacing, and storytelling! Funny, we flew up to Coldfoot from Fairbanks and were at same restaurant on July 16th. We will be avid followers on your whole trip to Argentina, where we hope to return soon (I love Argentine tango). Enjoy your adventure and safe travels! 😊

    Well done and thank you for sharing. It brought back some memories for sure. We started on 25 June 2021 in Deadhorse and made it to Panama City, Panama before changing course. Amazing ride down the Dalton Highway and you're in for some great memories as you continue. No one will understand the mosquitoes and just how maddening they are until they do this ride. We carried mosquito coils to burn while eating and camping, but as you mention and show, they are relentless on the never ending climbs. If you want any tips/suggestions after crossing into Mexico please reach out to us. We crossed at the Tecate border crossing and made our way down Baja. You can cross in Tijuana, but we recommend not to. Tecate is about 40 miles or so the the east and it's a beautiful ride. If you're carrying a drone, which it looks like you are, definitely reach out to us before you reach Nicaragua and maybe we can provide a tip on how to get through there. They are NOT allowed in Nicaragua and it will be taken if they catch you with it. We and a couple others we know of made it with our drones just so you know, but they are not allowed there. Be prepared to have your butt kicked by the mountains in Guatemala, no kidding some of the hardest cycling we've ever done, but the views are pretty darn amazing once you're on top. Cheers and happy travels! ~Ron & Petra

    This is pretty good! I'm a belgian sound designer and you asked your followers for feedback, so I have some :) I hear you have done some basic processing of windy sounds to keep them out of which is already good, but you can keep that through all videos wherre you talk. Just a low cut filter on all your talking tracks at about 100-150Hz should already do the trick. The first music you play is a bit loud compared to the video that came before, and in general all music in the video is a bit too loud I think. For online content you can use a compressor to get all you audio levels closer together. My gf was really disappointed when you didn't show the food you ate at the diner so maybe that could be fun to add :D and personally the text on screen doesn't really work for me, just voice-over would do very nice over the photo of you and your hosts! The vidoe also ends quite abruptly so maybe make a fade out screen for all your videos where you can add links to your socials and stuff :) a fading out video of you biking away from the camera could do nicely as well with some text where you're going next. I love the views and the music shots of just you biking but also there my gf missed some voice-over, over the music. More than factual information of where you were or where you're going, what are you thinking about when biking these tracks? Do you miss home? Are you happy, tired, thoughtful, or not? Voice overs that convey this message really keep the attention of a viewer when showing these beautiful landscapes :) I really like your edits and the overall pacing of the video! You can feel your enjoyment in that and in the fragments you choose to show, like the alien landscapes and the mosquitoes.
    Besides all that, if you ever need some help with the audio editing and mixing, I can for sure help you with that! I'm really jealous of your amazing trip and hope to one day be able to do this myself! Enjoy the hell out of everything and take time :) happy travels!!!

    In curious to know like the logistics of a trip like this. For example, what kind of training did you do before, how much food and water did you bring to begin, and most inportantly, the clothes situation, did you bring boxers and change daily? Did you clean your clothes often or not? Im also guessing there were barely any showers taken? SO MANY QUESTIONS

    How easy was it for you to fly from the uk to Alaska with your bike on severals airlines? How much did it cost in total roughly including luggage and who would you recommend to go with? I am doing the same this June but my biggest fear is my bike or equipment not turning up as it often happens to other travellers on forums. I’ve never flown with a bike before. But I’m starting my round the world in Prudhoe bay to make the tour more practical on my way round.
    Did you need to self transfer or check anything back in? I’m considering condor air from Frankfurt to save hassle .

    • @DanCyclesTheWorld
      @DanCyclesTheWorld  Před 10 měsíci

      I used condor air from Frankfurt it was really easy, I think it was about £60 extra for the bike from London to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Anchorage, and then Alaska airlines don’t charge for extra baggage. I had an apple AirTag on my bike so could see on every flight that it had been loaded onto the plane but you’d be pretty unlucky if it didn’t turn up, of course on forums there will just be loads of people complaining because the other 99% of people who had no problem aren’t going to write about how their baggage turned up as it should. I’ve flown twice with a bike now and the first time it is a bit nerve wracking but honestly isn’t as much of a problem as you’d think!

    A couple of questions.
    1.) what do you think caused your chain to snap after only a few hundred miles?

    3.) any flats on the ETs?

    • @DanCyclesTheWorld
      @DanCyclesTheWorld  Před rokem +1

      So with my chain I think I actually shifted a few gears while packing my bike and so when I went to pedal I pushed down and it got caught and snapped. As for the 1x drivetrain it’s been great, the original cassette was 11-48t and I only need that 48 gear on the toughest hills. As for the ETs not a single flat yet! As of now I’ve done about 1300 miles and they’re still going strong, they’re great tyres, really fast rolling on roads but still feel great off road
