Actually, it was his most successful film that caused his downfall. Citizen Kane was meant to be a skewering of William Randolph Hearst. Hearst was very powerful and influential at the time, and ordered all his newspapers to ban any advertisements for the film. And even though Citizen Kane still saw success, Hearst had enough clout in Hollywood to ensure that Welles wouldn't have quite the legendary career he deserved. Also, Orson Welles was pretty much right about these commercials. The directors were inept as hell.

Love the guy but I can see why he had to resort to adverts and transformers voice overs. He sounds like a real pain in the ass to work with.
