    Hi Cliff and of course Jaws. Wow!
    Ok I love the cut. I watched the video more than once before commenting.
    These facets on the gem are all sharp, crisp and flat. Something I dream of achieving and constantly strive for. The meets are awesome and show me what's possible as I continue to learn.
    I have heard facetors speak of their various prepolish steps, but seeing what you did on the copper lap made it make more sense to me. I usually see folks go from a very worn 1200 to a final polish or a 2500 or 3000 to a final polish. Seeing you add the extra step made more sense of what I have only heard about from other professionals.
    On the pavilion your steps of final polishing before the 3rd tier was cut made sense to me in that the final pavilion meets looked like they came together easier and better. Makes me wish I had seen this before.
    Your process on the crown I have heard of before by people who have sworn by it like you said but not having been taught this way it seemed that it would be time consuming in my minds eye. However, having seen the process now in your video I can see where this may be more of a time saver and improve accuracy of meets.
    Cliff the gem is a stunner! Thank you for sharing your work.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Tam. I thought getting the P2 facets was a critical element of the design. I new that if it's temporary center point was perfect then the P3 facets would create perfect kite facets without very little cheating in. I think the facets are really sharp and because it is a comp gem I put in a extra effort to get a more perfect gem. I've been wanting to get a better pre polish. You are correct a worn 1200 or even a very very worn 600 lap can make a good pre polish lap. Always keep worn laps as they come in handy. Ps, I think you work is very good, better than commercial cuts. Regards Cliff

  • @ChazCharlie1
    @ChazCharlie1 Před 4 lety +1

    Quartz and glass have the same composition but different structures. The definition of glass is a material that has been cooled sufficiently rapidly to prevent crystal formation, whereas quartz has a crystalline structure. I would assume this is why quartz is harder - its regular structure and plenty of bonds between atoms provide superior strength.
    On to your cut gem. I was hoping you would raise the camera angle slightly, we could not see right down at a right angle to the table. I worry that your gem has no internal fire or brilliance (I am absolutely a gem noob so I don't know if that is what you were going for). All of the sparkles came from the outer surfaces and I couldn't see any internal light play like in a diamond. As I said I am a noob so perhaps I am expecting the wrong thing. I also believe you when you say it is better in person.
    It is certainly an interesting cut, and I am glad that it looks to preserve more material than a round brilliant does.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  Před 4 lety

      Hi Charlie, Thanks for all the info. I agree about the sparkle. I was not happy about the final reveal as this gem looks so much better in real life. I would real like to do that again, as I could get the gem to sit up properly due to the odd shape. It would look great in the sun. I may rethink of doing another re shoot of the Final Reveal. Cheers

    I was not aware of the hydro quartz controversy but it definitely is not a glass but a man made crystal.
    Some may be disappointed that it is not natural. Of course that doesn't mean that some aren't selling glass and calling it hydro quartz.
    At this time I'm wary of gems from India, as the specs and quantities are high but the prices are too low.
    They are in "too good to be true territory"

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  Před 4 lety

      Thanks Paul. It's good that Australian comps mainly offer both synths and natural gems as a choice. I could have gone for natural quartz, but I really did want to try out the man made stuff, as it was another chance to learn more about another material. This will make me a better gem cutter long term. Cheers

    Nice gem and intressing design. And the material is Hydrothermal Quartz That is made from real Quartz in an Autoclave that has been grown on a seed. I can reccomend the book ”Gems made by man” by Kurt Nassau about synthetic gems.

    Looks Great. I use an 1940’s MDR Master machine and I found more consistency by polishing out each facet steps like you did on the crown. Have you ever tried the 3M film laps? I have gone all the way out to a 200,000 for a final polish on some special stones. Incredible results.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  Před 4 lety +1
