I’ve had my dachshund baby for 13 years. She is my medical alert dog and she is amazing. The only accessibility thing I needed to get for her was a set of doggie steps for my bed bc she couldn’t get up and done. She loves stairs and running a lot! Just remember to research and be prepared for them but I wouldn’t tell someone to not get a dachshund. They are amazing animals and if someone had told me not to get my baby I would have missed out on meeting my love of my life.

What do you mean by medical alert dog. Mine is very aware if Im not well. Will get off her food if she sees that I eat less.etc. Is this what you mean?

I have had two smooth haired black and tan males separately, and when I lost my last guy I adopted a brother and sister ( litter mates) and they both have eye issues. As long as the doc says they are healthy, ( and believe me, they want or need for nothing), I'm ok with that. I love my babies!

Had Dachshunds for all 40 years of my life. Just lost my mini Black and Tan Leroy last fall. He was 16 and was me and my wife’s best friend. I miss him dearly. Recently just got a all black miniature dachshund puppy. Gotta have a dachshund in my life.

That is exactly me, ive had two in the past 32 years , both were 16 and my last one , a blonde girl, just passed away 2 mths ago, she was our little sweetheart, my husband says he misses her everyday too, were getting a blk and tan pup nxt mth, its so lonely without my best friend.

I had my first dachshund back in 2007, actually she was my sister’s, her name was yumi. She was the sweetest. She would always sleep with me and howls in great sadness when we were out and gone. Unfortunately I only had 12 years with her, but those were the best 12 years of my life. She passed away in 2019 and it broke my heart. I wish I could’ve done more to save her.
Few days later I adopted a miniature red doxie, I just couldn’t live alone without a doxie. Now that doxie (Mamou) is 2 years old and she helped overcome my depression from this pandemic. I took good care of her just like with Yumi especially her back. She’s the sweetest pup, at first it was a bit hard because I adopted her when she was 7months. She’s already attached with the people who took care of her. But in just 2 weeks I got her heart and she got mine.
Last December I adopted another doxie (Marmie, named after Marmie from little women) a dapple black and gray dachshund. I love him.
Though he is notorious.
Energetic and playful. And sometimes a pain in the butt. But overall he’s so lovely.
These 2 doxies are just the opposite I often tell my Boyfriend that Mamou is an introvert and Marmie is very extroverted. Every single time we walk around our village he would always barks and cries at other dogs ( he desperately wants to play with them) and would really pull me while walking. With Mamou she’s very polite and I don’t know she’s like a Model Dog or something. She just walks straight, ignores other dogs. She’s classy. Anyway...
My advice for new doxie owners please take good care of their backs, making them run upstairs is fine but not all the time. Making them run downstairs is a big NO NO!!!! I always carry them both in my arms when we’re about to go down.
Other than that these dogs are resilient.
Brave, and they bark relentlessly. 😜
They are the sweetest. They would just come to me if they want caresses and when they see me holding or getting their leashes the excitement never stops.
They also suffer from a great separation anxiety. Leaving them for a long period of time (3-4hours) will make them sad and howl. I remember I recorded a video at home before I left and I saw them at the door, sniffing, crying and just waiting for me. And when I got home they just couldn’t resist to jump a lot and murder my face with kisses.
Let them kiss you btw. It releases their stresses.
BTW dachshunds like to EAT!!!
Twice a day is perfect. I don’t give them dog food. I give them meat. Chicken or beef is lovely for them.
AND WALK THEMON YOUR FREE TIME or preferably Every other day. They gain weight and without exercise they will be like Obby the Doxie!
And if you’re planning to train your DOXIE? Please don’t. You’ll just get tired.
Maybe have a professional help but with you alone it’s really hard.
They’re intelligent but they can be stubborn! Soooo stubborn. These dogs were bred to hunt and to have their own time looking for badgers and small rabbits to hunt back in the days. And they do it on their own. Sooooo I guess that’s one of the traits why it is really hard to train them. They’re very independent in that sense.

I love these dogs. And I’d probably wouldn’t change my breed. I just can’t. I’m attached to this breed.
They’re just the best. Even with their defaults I love them with all of heart. And I’m pretty sure you will either once you’ve reach the longevity with them.
They’re my life. My babies. I couldn’t live without them. Hope this will help!
I'm mildly annoyed that this video has so many more dislikes than his "pro dachshund" video. If you like the breed, great. I have one myself and I love him to death. He's the best dog I've ever had. But he wasn't easy to train and required a lot of consistency to work on his nervousness and prey drive. Now he's great but I tell people that they are not easy to have.
If you don't realize that all breeds have pros and cons then you're just not living in reality. This was a good video.

I was wondering if you could tell me how you trained to discourage the prey drive??? I live on 3 acres in the country with my 12 year old female standard dachshund and she is vicious with the animals. She has killed multiple chickens groundhogs rats but the problem is she’ll also go after cats which is an issue with the neighbors and family. It’s terrible because I literally cannot travel with her because she’ll kill small animals. Funny thing is I have a tortoise and he is about 10” long and a couple of pounds and I know she wants to kill him but she’s good with him. She just pushes him around.
She even tore off across the street to try to kill a fisher cat. She’s lucky she didn’t get killed. She’s a mad woman. She absolutely loves people, wants to go anywhere with everyone and loves children too

@@thenutrientwhisperer3700 Your difficulty seems a bit beyond my pay grade, honestly. With my dog his prey drive was highly attached to his aggression as a puppy and my wife was able to use negative pumishment (time outs) mixed with positive reinforcement for good behavior or for actually quieting down when prompted and his behavior slowly changed. Once his aggression decreased overall so did his prey drive, but he will still rip apart a toy as if it did him dirty.
To this day negative punishment seems to work best. If he gets mouthy or starts barking we ignore him, take him off our laps, etc. It only takes ten to twenty seconds and as soon as he stops we reinforce with praise. On the one hand it's the most work I've had to put into a dog but on the other he has become very sweet with a hilarious personality. He's still a troublemaker but we shudder when thinking how his behavior was when he was young.
As you say at the end mate, all breeds have pros and cons. So you’re always gonna have to do some groundwork, regardless of breed, right? 🙂

MINI DACHSHUNDS ARE INCREDIBLE. ONE IS SITTING NEXT TO ME NOW 19 YEARS OLD. I’VE HAD THESE DIGS FOR THIRTY FIVE YEARS. ILL HAVE THEM FOREVER.
I don't care what anybody says, these pups are the best, and I ain't kidding either. Amazing hunters, good noses, very loyal, great watchdogs, smart as hell. I've had em for deer hunting and if it runs after being shot, they will take off like a guided missle and always find em.
It took me well over 3 years to get my sausage dog always wanted one and I got him 2 years ago before they’re popularity exploded and i have never looked back he was house trained within 2 months of having him ,at 6 months old he knew multiple tricks paw other paw sit lie down stand roll over speak bang and wave it is down to the owner to train your dog correctly barking is a dachshund trait if he wants to bark he will doesn’t matter how trained he is.
My father owned like 5 of them. Then like 10 other dogs

Having had doxies for the last 30 years, and almost always having 2, I have to agree with 100 % of your advice. I couldn’t live without my babies though. I’m willing to make these changes in my life for what I’ve received from them.

My parents have an 11year old dachshund and everything you say is 100% right. However, I'd actually move reason number 5 to the first place - I can't believe how many people think dachshunds are just cute 'toy' dogs. Yes, they are adorable and the best breed ever but people don't appreciate their stubborn and independent nature, it breaks my heart to read that so many of them are returned to shelters, especially this year :((

I have had many dogs over my 57 years. My 2 Doxie were my favorites.
Surely this video applies (apart from maybe the steps point) to all dogs. I've had dachshunds for 30 years. We always have two so they have each other. They're very intelligent and loving and generally awesome.
I just came home after being at work for two weeks and guess what short haired, 12 week old, brown bundle of energy was about to spend his first night with us. Complete surprise.

I got my mini Dax 3 years ago and he's amazing. BUT you MUST be consistent with them. It took him 9 months to house train but now he's brilliant and rings his doorbell when he needs to widdle outside his walk times. He's loving, kind, sweet and hilarious. We don't allow him up the stairs and have a ramp for him to get on and off the sofa. We have to check under every blanket or cushion before we sit down because he loves to burrow under them. He's crate trained and trots into his "house" when he needs some alone time and at bed time. I deliberately chose the pup with the shortest back and most muscular frame, he's not neutered (which is recommended with this breed to reduce the risks of IVDD) and I don't work so I'm at home all day. He's confident and doesn't yap although he is a very good alarm dog if anyone comes onto our property. A deep chest makes for a deep bark. We live in a rural area with only one neighbour so lots of lovely places to walk. He's really clever so we keep his brain active with lots of trick training and puzzles. I'd get a whole pack of them if I could afford all the insurance! (He's insured for £7k as that is roughly what the IVDD surgery and recovery would cost.) Fingers crossed I never need it! He's absolutely part of the family but you HAVE to know what you're getting yourself into in order to take care of them properly and you need to tell your friends and family he's not a toy to be picked up. (There is a way to pick him up safely.) He will climb onto your lap for a cuddle and a nap all by himself thank you. I absolutely adore him and can't imagine my life without him.

I do go to work every day and I live by myself so my little boy hasn’t got me for companionship. He does deal though because he has a kelpie of all breeds as a playmate. One good thing about a dachshund is they’ll never jump over the fence to escape

Spot on! We have had doxies my whole life. Extended family has them as well. They definitely need to be with their people! We adore them and they’re wonderful pets, but these points are all correct.
Fell in love with the breed years ago. I have owned large dogs such as golden retriever and smaller breeds such as a beagle. I plan to get a dachshund puppy soon, looking for a loyal cuddly small breed, with a big personality. Still on the planning and research phase at the moment. I currently have a friendly chill golden retriever that gets on great with other dogs and puppies

If your home alot and want one id say get one they are incredibly funny and have such good personalitys because they are bold. Id say if i were a new weenie owner you must socialize the dog because they can be really aggressive. My dog is 2 and jumps up and down stairs furniture i mean i cant stop him he has more energy than you coukd imagine and they shit 5 times a day so make sure you teach it to shit outside which is very tough. I am old school when it comes to training dogs. If you baby this dog. It will make you its bitch. These things are so manipulative its impressive. You need to be confident in your ability to treat a dog like a dog. If you dont know what i mean by treat a dog as a dog then i wouldnt suggest getting a weenie dog.

Great video . My dachshund is my life and I couldn't have said it better . Everything you said is absolutely true .
So we just got one. The only steps she ever goes up or down is when she's coming inside after we take her out to relieve herself. It's 2 steps up. She doesn't go down them, only up. We do also have a set of foam steps for her to get up onto the couch, but the steps are very gently contoured.

I've had dachshunds For more than 20 years. I have two pups now. Wouldn't have it any other way. I'm not ignorant about their potty/temperament/stubbornness, etc. They are very well taken care of from us and doctors, and well adjusted. I agree, if you don't have time to be with them, they won't adjust properly. They need lots of interaction, love, and playroom. Very good analogy of a dachshund. But they are loud...haha!
Completely agree with everything here. I love my dachshund but he is the neediest pet I’ve ever had. Can’t go anywhere without him. Can’t leave him alone. He’s not a quiet pet. He hates stairs. He took three years to potty train and still pees in the house occasionally (when it’s cold, raining, or he is feeling lazy). Pros, he’s a great companion, super sweet, short hair so minimal grooming required, kills rodents, and bonus: acts as vacuum cleaner and garbage disposal.

Ex girlfriend has a dachshund and it was the most impractical decision she ever made.
He's a great little fella, but she was always at work through the day (8-6, and would then go to the gym) and she left him in the backyard all day and even into the night. Her flatmate ended up having to take care of the dog, and her neighbours always complained in addition to the flatmate becoming annoyed. Also lived in a terrace like neighbourhood.
I felt bad for the dog, because it wasn't his fault, but she didn't stop to think about whether it was the right dog, or if she should have had the dog at all. She just wanted the dog.
My dachshund is the sweetest little thing and I’ve had him for 11 years he has never bitten me purposely and is so sweet and has a great personality. He used to have back problems so if you don’t know how to deal with their long backs then u should research but I have never once regretted him.

I completely agree with you. When I got my daschund I was home a lot. BUT, I have had 2 others which I wasn’t home so much. It was a nightmare to house train. My current doxie is SUPER SMART and she was A LOT easier to train. Consistent going outside is how to train. She only barks at the mailman but she loves him and once he says hi and pays her some attention
Mine almost never barks (I started training her not to very very early) but she’s the same with strangers - if a burglar broke into my house and gave her attention, she’d help them carry out the TV 😂
We have a Jack Russell and a JR/Dachs mix.
The JR is a very quiet, calm dog.
The Dachs mix is absolutely mental, great fun and very loving but completely insane.

I just lost the Best Dachshund I have ever had.
His personality was so out there.
He was a very good judge of character. He bit my ex-mother-in -law.
He could Express himself, with just a look... I knew what he was thinking.
He was by my side for 4 months, when I went through radiation treatment.
He passed May 8th 2020
I cant remember when my wife's birthday is, but I will never forget little Oscar.

If they hear leaves blowing or any activity be prepared for the barking. It's not a small dog yap.
Is there any evidence that supports the idea that stairs leads to bad backs? I have had 3 over my life, as did my parents and grandparents. Inhave always walked mine on rocky foreshores and lots of stairs. All but my most recent lived until late teens, were arthritic but no back issues. Anecdotally, when speaking to other dachshund owners, I don't see any correlation with stairs and bad backs. I do see a strong correlation with obesity and minimal exercise. I would hazard a guess that fatties that jump off the couch are more of a risk than a fit dog regularly running up and down stairs. Love to hear the thoughts of others on this.

A dachshund mom for many years. I agree with everything you said. My kids have ramps everywhere. I do have time to give them. I have some videos on my channel..1 prob I do have yiu didn’t mention. My kids dig like the devil. We do have moles though. Got my yard tore up since fall., i love all dogs but have always loved dachshunds even when they weren’t cool. I noticed a lot of dachshund merchandise but not so much in other breeds . Thanks for all the good info 🤗👍

Hi, is it correct that long haired dachshunds are less likely to bark a lot? I think I’ve read it somewhere. Does anyone have experience with these specific dachshunds?
Yeah I work for like 10 hours a day and my Chiweenie is by himself all that time. He has plenty of stimulation during the day though and when i get home, we play, walk etc and then he sleeps with me all night long. hes getting better.
I’ve had my Black and Tan standard buddy for 12 years. People don’t understand what a whirlwind of trouble he can be. He once managed to lock himself in a room and we couldn’t easily get him out. That said, he is super sweet and pretty smart. No back issues fortunately. Shockingly he’s pretty independent and is ok being alone for hours at a time. His step brother is a Japanese Chin and they get along great.
I have a dachshund and I do love her and she is adorable I would not get another in the future. She has been incredibly stubborn and difficult to train. She is potty trained, she sits, comes and heels. But that’s only when she feels like it. She is an independent thinker. I had to spend so much time and energy just making sure she finally grasped how to be house broken. Like I said cute dogs but there are so many other breeds with same positive qualities and none of the negative ones
The barking is real 😂 I want to learn how to reduce the barking a little because sometimes it gets overwhelming for us in the house
In my experience, Dachshunds are one of the best dog breeds in every way. It is completely clear why they are a favorite breed of many people, including me. Nothing cuter than a sweet, funny, smart and playful dog, which is a Dachshund. He can be very well trained, which depends ONLY on the ability of his owner. If you want to have a dog that also has a great personality, the right choice for you is a Dachshund. Even if he is sometimes a little stubborn, the Dachshund is simply irresistible. And finally, there's only one thing better than a Dachshund - two or more Dachshunds ❤

All of these points are very true but so worth it. After 21 yrs of dachshund ownership it's just a natural part of life. My 5 year old goes through phases where she starts peeing inside and we have to potty train over and over, lol.
All situational. We had a two year old boarder collie who was trained extremely well when we got our new dachshund pup! He caught onto potty training really fast! And yes the barking will be a problem if you have neighbors. He loves letting his voice be heard!

i’ve been running dachshunds for just about 20 years now and I agree with everything in this video except for the stairs. Perhaps my dogs are just athletic from being hunted on a regular basis, but stairs have never seemed to be an issue for any of my dogs.overall excellent video and I’ll subscribe.
PLEASE be careful with stairs in your home. Or just any long fall. A dog will probably not fall down a flight of stairs, but the problem is those smaller falls. If there backs get fucked and you can afford a spinal specialist it is the most heartbreaking thing you could experience.
Dachshunds are the best. My wife and I have two long haired. A black and cream and a blonde. It can't be stressed enough, you have to invest in little stairs for them, it's really bad to have them jump off the couch, etc. We have stairs near the couch and near the bed. Can't let them get overweight either, it'll destroy their back. They require a nice long walk each day, lots of energy and they'll let you know when they're bored and want to play. I really can't say enough good things about them, watching them root around in the woods when we go for hikes is adorable beyond belief. They live for exploration and they're incredibly loyal to their family. Wonderful breed.

I'm not qualified from your perspective and level, but I've got two Daxies and it concerns me how many people want a Daxie... I did want to do a channel educating people about the realities of this!

My mom had two daschunds...one of them , the male had a stroke.. the other one who was a chocolate I was fond of , she would bat her eyes when I talked to her...Unfortunately I wasn't at home, but at work when she ran out of the house and was hit by a car..I do miss her , she was a great dog . I think if you like the breed then get one, I would just say despite being very loyal, they can be very nerotic and stubborn.. these are some traits I think Germans bred into them . RIP Petunia 🙏 🕊
Well I got my first one 50 years ago! They are adorable but have a mind of their own..they’ll do what they want and come when they want!! My last one was a purebred pie bald I got from the humane society❤️

Such great information, and SO true! I have two doxies, one is 9 and the other is 21 yrs old! Ive had both since they were little puppies. Although their personalities are different, there are undeniable core personality traits these dogs come with, traits some people may find "too much" and you named them, spot on! Consistency with these dogs is PARAMOUNT . Theyre also masters of manipulation, lol.. (they know they're adorable,, and use it to get their way!!)
I had both mine potty-trained fairly quickly . I used consistent /positive affirmation and bits of real steak, worked like a charm! ) BUT ! After 8 years of being perfectly trained dogs, I moved from sunny southern California, to a cold, wet, snowy climate- and let me tell you! They are SO temperature sensitive, its changed everything.
if its snowing.. get ready to clean up messes. Lol. I started using puppy-pads when we have inclement weather. It works well, however... now, if it starts to rain or snow when im at work, they use my antique rugs thinking they're potty-pads! Ha ha.
Now that one of mine is 21 years old, it requires a LOT of adjusting. He can't hold it as long. So before bed every night, we cover all the rugs in the house with pads, and have to pick them all back up again in the morning. We have ramps hiding under every bed or couch in the house. I believe, when you really truly love an animal.. all of these chores, they dont really feel like 'work ' , its just what we do for the ones we love. That being said, if you want a goofball of a dog,, whose insanely adorable, terribly loud, extremely clingy (and has separation anxiety so bad they'll cry for an entire 8 hours until you're home) and an extremely stubborn dog, with bad teeth that need constant attention (or you'll pay up the wazoo at the vet) that's easy to train with some things, and simply refuses to learn others, and REALLY REALLY HAS TERRIBLE BACK ISSUES! (I put msm in their water every day & watch them like a true helicopter-mom lol) then , this is the dog for you! Lol
Instead of covering all of your antique rugs why not make the room in the kitchen where there's linoleum flooring while you're gone and put puppy pad down for them to use that way? All they do when you're gone is sleep anyway so as long as they have their favorite bed and food and water they'll be fine. I've had Dachshunds in my life since 1995 and I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't know about the smooth coat but I know that the long-haired will go outside in rain snow and wind without any hesitation at least all of mine did. I very strictly potty train them and they did not have free roam of the house without my attention until they were a year old because if they pee once or twice they will smell that spot and do it again and again just like any other dog. Also I've never had any of my dachshunds go down in the rear. As long as your dachshund proof your house and don't let them do stairs or jump up or down off of furniture their backs will be fine. It also helps if you don't have other dogs for them to roughhouse because I do know that they can hurt their backs fairly easy. I had a German Shepherd for 6 of the years who played with them a little rough and they never hurt their backs. Dachshunds are awesome little dogs
You have a dachshund that's 21 years old? That's amazing can I ask what you feed them? I have yet a dachshund to grow past the age of 12 one of them passed away from being anemic just before she turned 13 and another one that was 12 years old and got stomatitis 2 months after having her teeth cleaned. My advice is to always ask for antibiotics after having these little dog's teeth cleaned. She had her teeth cleaned every year and still got stomatitis which is bacteria and infection of the mouth and gums. 2 months after she had her last cleaning she had terrible breath and I just blew it off because I knew she had just had her teeth cleaned. It wasn't long before she stopped eating and I took her to the vet and they said she had stomatitis and it had gone through her bloodstream.

I’m in California-! My mom and sister bought him from an AKC breeder- just left him in the garage all of the time-! I ended up taking him over. He’s my best friend 😭😔 I actually could never forgive them for the way he was treated..
@@italiangirl2440 My Dachshund just turned 18. I feed him wet and dry dog food mixed (mostly IAMS and Pedigree), and occasional chicken (vet is horrified). I think the key to his long life is daily walks. He still easily goes 3/4 to a mile every day. He's a little slow out of the gate these days, but once he's warmed up, he moves right along.
I have had Dachsies for over 50 years as my entire family has always had one or two. First pics of me and my siblings was with our black and tan Lena Lou. They have incredible strong German will and most will test you at every turn. We have only had two out of the many, many to have back issues. PLEEEASE, PLEEEASE DO NOT free feed your Dachshunds and keep their weight low. They are usually chowhounds but resist and maybe feed just rwa meaty bones. I have done that for nearly 30 years and all my smooth standards have made it to 14 and one to 15. They are the best but please be the alpha or it can go really sideways with these little tyrants. 🐾❤️🐾❤️

Great content and picked up a few new tidbits of info! That being said, I adopted my dachs almost exactly a year ago and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. With persistent training - especially have to be persistent for vocalization, they are the most incredibly intelligent, happy, adorable, loving, and curious companions out there.

We have had 3 doxy's. Our daddy dog lived to be 18yrs old and he had IVDD and a wheel chair the last 10 yrs of his life and needed assistance to urinate. He fathered 5 litters of puppies before his back went out. He just recently passed and he is missed terribly. Momma dog lived only 13 yrs and she had 4 of his litters. She was awesome. We are now left with one of their pups, and she is the best. She is 9yrs old. Agreed that they are stubborn but they are trainable if you have the patience. Once they are trained they are the best babies ever. We love doxy's so much!!

We have had ours for 2 1/2 years after years of labradors and spaniels. We worship this little dog. He’s been a little bugger to house train, he barks at wind/leaves/birds/nothing, he tries to do everything that he shouldn’t to keep his back healthy, he wants to eat everything and can find food we didn’t know was there - whilst trying to manage his weight, and he is jealous and needy but also so loyal and cuddly. We have had to adapt to this behaviour and honestly, I don’t think I could not have one in my life now. He’s so tiny yet has a massive personality and he is just amazing! But this video is great because it’s not a breed for everyone. I did a lot of research before I bought him and I’m glad I did. The house training was not easy at all, they are so stubborn and it is a battle of wills. My trainer recommended that I had a good period of time to really get that house training right from the moment he came home. I’m glad I did. 14 weeks!!! 14!!! He still tries to sneak a pop inside when it’s raining too 🙄 in all my years of owning dogs I’ve never had one so difficult to house train! Future dachshund owners be aware.

We had 3 dogs (mutts) before getting our doxies and I felt unprepared, they were HARD to train. They are very stubborn, I had to spend significant amounts of my time training them not just potty training and tricks but also leash walking, barking, jumping, etc. And they are not afraid of big dogs, they'll be aggressive. They are very cute and loyal, but if you don't have time to train and go potty 5-6x on a regular schedule, then don't get one. This breed also has a lot of teeth issues so be ready to brush their teeth daily and spend on yearly teeth cleaning. They are not cheap.
Hadn't thought of the barking thing. I'm retired, so 1-4 I can cover, but we share a house with in-laws who are used to very quiet dogs.
They definitely are not a quiet breed. I've been blessed to have had 4 doxies in my life and my sister found them too loud and obnoxious. Fortunately she didn't live with me, LoL 🤣
My dash hound is very good he I have never regretted it the only thing you need to be carful with is it back Bc they are super fragile
I just had to put my 13 year old Dachshund to his forever sleep. I am devastated. I cry everyday because I miss him so much. They are the best breed IMO.
So sorry. I lost mine a couple of months ago. She was only 11 years, healthy, daily walks, love of my life. One morning snuggled under her blanket and her heart just have just stopped. Devastating and I know precisely how you feel, for me 4 months on. But when the time is right we will know to start again and once a (for me miniature) dachshund always a dachshund. Hang in there. ❤️

@@KarenRiffe I know exactly how you feel. I have owned 10 dogs in my life (Rottweiler, German Shepherd, spaniel, 7 Yorkshire Terriers). I had to put four to sleep. The others died of natural causes. I mourned them all but life went on. One day walking round a shopping centre, saw my wife was missing. Found her in a pet shop holding this tiny Black and Tan bundle. Eyes were not open properly. We had to have her. I had never even thought about a miniature dachshund. I owned 10 dogs but Abigail owned me. She was a delight and my constant companion. Everyone loved her. When I picked up her blanket 4 months ago and found she had died so quietly right next to me, well you can understand. The shock overwhelmed me. I was inconsolable for the next three months still seeing her everywhere. I have only now started watching Dachsie sites and regaining my joy in seeing the joy of others. They are quite unique personalities. I think I have time for one more in my life and it can only be another wiener. It will take a bit more time for you and you will cry for months. I know I did. But you can be assured that the grief does fade and happy memories will remain. Abbie was so special and I will never ever forget her but the time will come that I will take the plunge and fall in love with another wiener- the best dog in the world!
I am crying reading your comment. I had to put my sweet Scully down six years ago after 13 wonderful years together. Not a day goes by that I don't miss or think about her. I still cry for her.

biggest problem with the minis people baby them treat them as dress up toys , ive had them over 20 years & find them easy to own just need to respect them as hounds & treat them as you would a bigger breed

Love my dachshunds.. I've had many now. They are seriously stubborn though, and not for everyone. One thing irritating me right now is that my dog got his foot injured and he couldn't use the ramp. I ended up picking him to put him up and down, now he wants my help every time. Having a difficult time breaking this habit. I can get the barking thing, but outside my dogs were fine with the neighbors dog until they got a new one that barks aggressively at them. Then the dog arguing is on. Pretty sure my male that is always on a diet and is probably HANGRY thinks they are calling him tubby.

In general, if you have ever had trouble staying motivated and dedicated to working with a pet (especially a low maintenance pet like maybe a cat), getting a dachshund should be completely out of the question, and a dachshund puppy is EXTREMELY challenging.
Over the years, I’ve had many dogs of plenty breeds and cats and even foster “bottle baby” kittens for the shelter as young as a day old. Without a doubt, our miniature dachshund (who turned 17 in Feb 2022) requires the most daily work and consistency. I’ve had 11 foster kittens at once (3 different ages) and the dachshund took the most time and effort.
They’re sweet and affectionate, but they are challenging… and ours isn’t too bright, honestly. I’m not calling them “dumb” as a breed. Ours could get lost in a paper bag and always got confused easily, but now he’s also getting quite senile. Thankfully, he’s extremely sweet unless you’re a squeaky toy and then he’s your worst nightmare!
Also, they were bred as hunting dogs, so you shouldn’t have them around tiny furry creatures. Last Easter, our old man found a rabbit burrows and murdered 2 baby rabbits before my husband (who was out doing yard work) could get to them. It’s by no means our first experience with this. He also taught our pitbull how to dig up ground moles in the yard and took us weeks to curb that behavior.
I’ve also known quite a few who were extremely protective of certain people and my grandmother cannot even get a hug from her grandchildren without hers attempting to bite them. My cousin’s and aunt’s both do the same. Ours doesn’t, but I’m still cautious when young children are around him. In fact, he’s MUCH more likely to bite than our pitbull, but she is loving to an extreme and gentle.

When I started dating my husband 14yrs ago, he had this pup for 4 years already, so It was out of my hands. Little did I realize, a miniature dachshund is supposed to only live 10-16yrs, but he just turned 18 this month! He’s mostly blind, half deaf and half senile, but he wanders around the top section of our deck most of the day (it’s pretty big) and he sleeps in the kennel inside with our big dog at night. I can understand the “I love him but sometimes I don’t like him” feeling. Years back, I found a baby raccoon that I was bottle feeding, but the dachshund was determined to kill it. One night, he somehow got passed 2 closed doors (presumably snuck past when my husband or teen went to the bathroom) and found the raccoon and killed it. I got up to bottle feed it just minutes later (the body was still warm). To say that I was upset was an understatement! I’m committed to giving him all he needs, but do I LIKE him…. I’d have to say “no”. I never really got over that. I know that sounds terrible, but I do take very good care of him…. obviously, since he’s still doing well at 18!

ive been watchen his dogs for atleast 1+ years now for him.
i told him the other day i noticed when im around them they typically dont behave badly like he says they do with him.
like he says his youngest always wakes up like 3 hours into bed time with him to go potty but she does NOT do such behaviour when with me.
I hated small dogs until my wife got a dachshund. Onry lil shit though. I love that thing.
I’ve got one the barking is a pain, I’ve resorted to a muzzle, I’d have no life left baby sitting day and night couldn’t go out, it was driving me crazy and insane, but I’d never give him up the love is there! Don’t tell me I’m cruel as you all have them, and my Harper has a good kind life ❤️🙏🐶
Your list is very good but I've also read where some people think dachshunds are good in apartments. I don't own animals because of what you said about consistency and life style. I did live in an apartment building where there were 2 dachshunds. They really did not cause problems with their barking. However I do agree however that doxies can bark a lot so maybe it was just that those 2 were very well trained.
I'm a first time dachshund owner and I got my fur baby when she was 6 weeks old she is now over a year old and I could not imagine life without her she is an amazing companion my best friend she loves other people but she still protective of me and my two daughters she loves us all equally but I'm got to say maybe her favorite lol but I've also been taking her out since day one so she's been super socialized I do not leave her at home she is with me all the time so that being said I can see a problem with people only a dachshund that are not going to be home a lot with it because they do not like to be left alone and they will tear up things when they get lonely or their anxiety is high but if you're getting a dog to spend time with the dog and be around it a lot like you should then dachshunds are perfect

I have a 12 year old Dachshund that I got 2 years ago, all of this is 100% true! I love him and he is my everything and saved my life, but he needs lots and lots of time, he is quite the howler, and he suffers from pretty bad arthritis.

I've had 4 dachshunds over 55 years and they are definitely not the right dog for everybody. I lost my second dachsie to IVDD in the fall of 73 and it took me 40 years to adopt another. (My third was Hilda''s puppy.). Trinket was a rescue from a hoarding situation and was very needy. I had to potty train her so I know how difficult to can be. Lots and lots of praise consistently given is the key. Unfortunately, Trinket died in October; she would have turned 15 in January. I do miss her barking, though and today when our Lab mix, Gwen, barked several times it sounded like Trinket. I think Gwen misses Trinket as do I.
Regarding the companionship. Is this about the owners or a second dog ? Because we would like to have two so they always have companionship.
I've owned three at one time as well as one with a plott hound. They get along with other dogs however they would much rather be with their people. When you have more than one it just accentuates the dachshund personality. They play off each other. I'm planning on getting two more within the next year. They are not the type to be satisfied with their main companionship being another dog. I highly recommend getting two. But be prepared to be devoted to both.
