Ride the Ferrocarril Central Andino! Part 4: Through the highest railroad tunnel in the world!

- The 4th and final part of our journey up the Ferrocarril Central Andino. This section picks up at the Casapalca switchbacks and covers some of the most scenic sections of the railroad as it passes through the desolate treeless landscape of the high Peruvian mountain country. We will pass through 7 tunnels perched high on a rock ledge before passing Lake Ticlio and then plunging into the 3/4 mile long Galera tunnel, the highest standard gauge railroad tunnel in the world and to Galera yard, the 2nd highest point on any railroad in the world at 15,681 ft surpassed only recently by the Chinese Railway line to Lhasa. I apologize for the sound quality and focusing issues, I am going to blame the altitude for this user error.

We travelled these lines in the late 50's as a family. My dad was a mining engineer and ran the concentrator for Cerro Mining Corp at Cerro de Pasco, well beyond Ticlio, at 14K feet. The town just past this high point is called Morococha. Beyond this point is Cerro de Pasco and also the coal mining site of Gollarisguisga. Life is tough for young gringo families living at these altitudes.
It must be tough for all humans up here!
I've "traveled" all four videos and the journey is just crazy amazing. Beautiful, thrilling, and in some ways beyond my comprehension. Thank you for these videos. Truly remarkable.
Thank you, really glad you and many others are enjoying sharing my experience.
May I say, this video series is my lifetime worth watching, Best thing is the placement of camera, full nature's view. Thank you very much
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
WOW ! I watched all 4 videos , and I am very happy to see this lovely country . Very courajous they are ! Nobody imagine behind that high mountains hide such surprising things ! Lovely country . Thank you so much . Love from Brazil .
Hello from Pittsburgh, PA. I have viewed thousands of train videos but your series on this line has to top my list as the most spectacular and breathtaking I have ever had the pleasure to watch. It is amazing that those old diesels can operate at those high altitudes! Thank you so much for allowing the CZcams train viewers around the world to be a part of great adventure.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video series, ! It was an amazing experience to ride this line and happy to share it with everyone on youtube. Indeed it is amazing that the C39-8s which everyone wrote off as junk in the US have had such an amazing second career.
Shows what turbo-chargers can do. Original steam trains ran fine, new diesels could hardly run themselves until they put on turbochargers.
What wonderful videos. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful and at such high altitude. In my state of health I wouldn't last five minutes up there but it's so wonderful to see it all. Thank you for giving us all the privilege.
Thank you, Im glad that you enjoyed the videos. Just walking at those altitudes for me was tiring, I don't know how the guys who maintain this railroad do it.
This is one of the most amazing rides I've ever seen!
Amazing video, but more amazing the planning and building of this railroad line.
Hlo friend
Congratulations! Excellent video depicting the dramatic scenery and the awesome engineering of the line! Bravo!
Congratulations for this wonderful job.
The video is by far more rewarding than what I expected.
Thanks for posting it!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video!
I could watch the whole series and I’m stocked. I’ve been there crossing the Andes by car but never by train. What an amazing experience and thank you very much!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video, we crossed by car too but the train was far more memorable.
Hard to admire the scenery if your job is to watch the road while driving. Also railway lines tend to travel through less disturbed landscapes compared to highways.
Galera tunnel is such a creepy, but fascinating, ride.
25:50 Seeing the two red signal lights appear up ahead makes it look like a red-eyed monster was waiting to block the train.
SENSACIONAL! GRACIAS
Amazing journey through the 4 part series. Thank you.
Thanks for watching all 4 parts, glad you enjoyed it!
RailScapes - Trains & Travel mesmerizing, it’s 4 am here. I can’t turn it off
I watched all four of this series on my big 75"TV with the surround sound turned up. I have shared them with fellow train club members. Well done!
The big GEs sure sound good! Thanks for sharing the video :)
What a breath-taking journey. Enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks.
Thank You for Your brilliant 4 Part Videos-- VERY different to Driving Trains in Western Australia--we are flat compared to THIS--. ALL HONOUR TO THE SURVEYORS AND WORKMEN THAT BUILT THIS MASTERPIECE OF ENGINEERING! I assume You--The Locomotive Crew and the Diesel Locomotive--all had a little bit of difficulty--finding some OXYGEN---at the Peak.
What a great journey! Fantastic railway. Thanks much for posting.
Thanks for your marvelous video. I enjoyed each and every moment.so incredible and breathtaking. Our Indian Himalayan road and train journey are equally marvelous.
Brilliant footage. Watched all four videos. This railway fascinates me! Thanks for sharing!
Thousands of salute to those who are constructed this railway line.
Never seen such overspending on a railroadline
@Showdown. True that a lot of money was used to build the rail line. But it was a necessity to connect from the capital of Lima and the rest of the Peruvian coast to the Andies Mountains towns/communities to help strengthen the transportation structure of Peru.
K.d.chinivala. A thrilling journey to Highest bridge.Marvelous excellent engering skills.salutes to executioner's.

Fantastic series. They must have dug those tunnels by hand, it would be near impossible to bring bulldozing equipment up there at that altitude, It is an engineering achievement.
Incredible! Thanks for sharing this fantastic journey.
Best train videos I have ever watched, scenery fantastic
super series, not only top of the world in tunnel altitude but the film itself also tops similar videos, thank you very much!
All four Parts of this are excellent! But my goodness, at the same time, it's scary like you wouldn't believe!

Thanks for the great video! I climb mountains and to go there by train is amazing and unthinkable. There is no way in Japan to reach such a rugged and beautiful place by train. Thank you! I have watched it many times.
The most amazing train ride I have seen up too now. Made even more spectacular by looking at it on my 86-inch 4K tv. The end was ruined by someone who kept refocusing the camera.
Outstanding parting shot!

This is my country Peru, south america, mysterious and fascinating also millennial
Very, very, very impressed!!!
There’s a tunnel here in Wisconsin on the Sparta-Elroy bicycle trail (which is a converted railroad line) that is 3/4 of a mile long! You have to dismount your bike and walk it through and the only way that you can see where you’re going is with a flashlight! I did that both ways! It seemed to take forever to get to the other end and daylight! (I did it when I was still in high school in the early ‘90’s)
After getting off the train we rode with the track crew back to the other end in a rail motor car with no lights, it was darker than any night inside there with no lights, exactly how you described.
I did it as a boy scout. I was amazed going through those tunnels at Elroy Sparta. I am proud to say I did all 32 miles once.
Thanks , feeling that am on the train riding,, thank you so much..
Just amazing !
Very nice video!!
Thanks! That was incredible! But your camera was freaking-out! Let's do it again! I'd like to see better maps next time.
