That $30k estimate was 100% the "go away, not interested" price.
I saw your comment just now, and it is pretty much the same thing I said in the comment I wrote two hours later.
They were politely trying to tell the guy to forget about the diesel engine.
the buy a new truck price
My son bought a fancy Ford F150 with the V6 diesel engine. It was around the 60,000 mark. He was driving from work when all hell broke lose. The crank snapped 😱. The truck was still under warranty. It took over 4 months to get the truck back. Ford ordered a short block, heads, and other components separately for whatever reason. The technician working on it told my son that he didn't understand why Ford and the dealership went that route because they had a complete new engine in stock.
How they order parts is up to the Cost- Cap Tool. it was either cheaper or more parts were available.
Probably because the warranty would pay more labour rate if they did it the kit route, instead of ordering a crate engine, which has the labour part included in the price only for install. They wanted to bill the extra 100 hours of doing all the assembly instead, as they could charge for the removal time as well per part. ie Remove head labour, remove oil pan labour, then remove engine complete labour, which was the only thing needed. Basically a warranty scam.
Ford had a bad lot of 3.0cranks,ok I believe Ford usa stuffed many customers around badly, that happens unfortunately
What ever repair route makes the dealer service department the most money (most billable hours), is the route the dealer will choose
@@gmailcgs under warranty Ford requires a cost-cap filled out. Whatever broken parts are added. Ford will look at parts available, warranty times, and other stuff and the Cost-cap will spit out a decision and that's what the dealership has to do. It has nothing to do with what's gonna pay the most when it's warranty. Ford is only worried about getting the car back on the road however they can.
You know it'll be an interesting video when mechanics get excited and start calling each other over.
How in the world does the dealer think they can get away charging $30K for an engine?? My thinking is they didn't really want to do it and said that much to make him go away.
Because it says "Diesel"
Its amazing it still ran with all of that internal cannibalism goin on in there.
Massive carnage!
It ran … until it didn’t.
I couldn't believe we were able to back it into the shop
More engine demolition videos please lol 😆
Eric this engine had some great malice in the whole palace.
@@kevincurry4735 it sure did. Out of all the parts left the right head and cams were the only saveable parts 😂
Hi @RainmansRaysRepairs you have inspired me to go to college to learn auto mechanic and to get a job as a mechanic after that I'm a 22 year old man from bristol tennessee I enjoy watching you and I hope you keep up the great work I've learnt alot from you so I just want to thank you
Highly recommend you get a job in a wrecking yard to start then move on to an independent repair shop you'll learn about the different manufacturers at an independent shop vs a dealership where you're limited to one brand. Some time at a specialty shop or two will round out your knowledge base. Electrical diagnostics, diesel, even transmissions. There's plenty to learn and it takes time. Good luck.
@@StevenDaugherty-uo5cs thanks 😊

Nashville auto diesel Class of 93 Good school
Do to over-fueling from the tune it caused the top of the piston to expand and hang in the bore causing the rod bearing to fail under excessive load stretching the rod and ultimately causing engine failure
On Sunday, I saw a video from the YT site 'LR Time' that also disassembled the same engine model that had blown and had a similar failure. The timing belt was replaced but was off by 4 degrees. They believe that the engine didn't have the oil changed often enough or didn't use the right oil. LR Time is a married couple in their early 50's in Germany who narrate their work in excellent American English and have a great sense of humor between them. They apparently have some sick love for Land Rover products, have a lift in their driveway, and several LR vehicles and projects. He is a technician/engineer who's work is with balancing drive train parts (like driveshafts) for new vehicles.
You broke Eric's golden rule! Always go front to back, never back to front. 😂
Its cleaner that way!
He should have included Eric in this adventure!
Well, sometimes you just gotta mix things up by hitting it from the back...
Now Ray is gonna get an infection.
Giggity!
Pls don't be offended by this Ray, it's meant as a compliment.... I love having your vids on in the background whilst I work on my uni assignments! The stories you tell, and the way you talk about what your doing helps my work flow 🤷♂️
Interesting "autopsy" of that blown up diesel. Hard to pinpoint the point of initial failure. I think your conclusion is spot on. When it started to fail, it grenaded big time. Teardown on an engine is always nicer when you don't have to concern yourself with reassembly. Thanks for the trip through it. 🙂
Classic example of a _cascade failure!_

I was kidding too. I was talking about being outlawed in a “manly man” environment because they look so “metrosexual”. 🤣
If the warranty company NEEDED PROOF that the engine is damaged when there is INTERNAL PARTS making an inspection hole then you need to trash that WARRANTY company cuz they have no DAMN clue how a vehicle works!!!
Mail 📬 them the piston & rod pieces 😂
Never underestimate the lengths some ass-hats will go to scam. I could see some clown punching a strategically placed silver dollar sized hole in the side of the block, collecting the money for an internal rebuild and then fixing the hole with JB weld or devcon. Far fetched? Maybe but I wouldn't be shocked to hear some joker tried to pull something like that.

Truly impressive carnage in that eco-diesel. Eric @IDoCars would be jealous.
Eric sure would be jealous.
Eric and his infamous « forbidden glitter »
When I do cars converges with Florida man, entertainment ensues. Engine tear-downs are always so satisfying.
It actually was brand loyalty. Ford owned jaguar and land rover in 2004. They sold everything including Mazda, Volvo, and Aston Martin in 2008 when the housing market crashed. I don't know if you remember the term too big to fail. So Mercedes bought Chrysler Ford sold all of is subsidiaries and the government gave gm an illegal loan to keep them from going under. So in that Era there were a lot of cross platforms. The charger/ challenger are older e classes. Ford explorers and Taurus were Volvo s60, and saabs were gm trailblazers and Subaru wrx's. There are still contracts from that time. That's why that engine is what Ford used. They owned the design more then likely, or at least paid for the design.
Ford is still paying that 6 billion dollar bailout they received in 2009
Mercedes bought Chrysler in 1998; sold them off in 2007. Was Chrysler LLC at that point, owned by Cerberus Capital (who was helmed by Dan Quayle, aka VP Potatoe). When the slaughter of the "Great Recession" happened in 2008, both GM & Chrysler got government loans, Fiat bought half of Chrysler LLC and GM became 'Government Motors' and never recovered from that.
In the early 1970's Volkswagen was given a bailout by the German government before the Rabbit/golf came out. Everybody has forgotten about that.
If they don't lower the inflated prices of domestic made cars and truck the next crash we won't be able to save them.
Screw the penalties bring the size of trucks way back down.
You can't evolve an industry overnight it takes years of research to bring up mileage and lower emmisions.
@@bobbg9041bad thing is the automotive industry knew of the emissions changes years ago and sum did create better engines that produce lower emissions but they drug there feet getting them into cars and trucks to help the consumer transition. Instead the V-8 has suffered due to incompetent lazy engineers in my opinion. So many viable ways to make the V-8 torque monsters and increase mileage and lower emissions. FCA stayed with cast iron blocks while GM and Ford years ago went aluminum. Now FCA has a straight 6 which has been in development for over 10 yrs and now in production
Concrete saw to remove timing chain….page 109 of manual 😎
But what about the shavings contaminating the engine! Oh no!
The 350 you tore down earlier this week looked alot better 😂
Plot twist!!!
The insurance adjuster for the warranty company just saw this video and learned that the engine had an after market tune for the fuel system. Subsequently the insurance company has determined the warranty has been voided and now demanding their money back.
Ray has to lien the truck, owner no $ to pay
I Do Cars is squirming watching this tear down. So beautifully destructive!
Eric is foaming at the mouth over not being able to toss the water pump.
I noticed the piston cooler nozzle was missing on the bad cylinder. Whether it was knocked off by the piston failure, or it fell beforehand and that was what caused the failure would be nice to know. Loss of cooling oil to the cylinder could easily cause the piston failure. If the cooler knozzle could be located, that could tell the tale of what happened to it.
I have this engine in my truck. I hope this wasn't the norm for these engines. I like my truck and the diesel. It gets great mileage had no problems pulling my camper.
so far .......
it has a reputation. take care of it and hope it doesn't detonate
Leave it stock factory, change oil on the ardous service timing and mileage mark, and do not take it past mid revs.
Never ever get a tune. Leave it 100% stock. And change the oil sooner than recommended.
Don’t forget that belt was gone at 100k
If you have a look to LR Time they have just suffered the same on a Landrover ,thanks for the Video
@22:00 "no quarter given to foreign troops" chuckles :)
😏
Ray Does Cars? It has Piston McNuggets, malice in the combustion palace, inspection ports, and conrods with Peyronie's disease. Everything!
Hey Ray, that was a really interesting tear down. I've learned a lot about diesels from watching your channel. Cheers!
This is kind of like an I Do Cars engine teardown but with a lot more irreverent humor. Very entertaining. And informative. Change your oil, folks!
Good thing Dave is there to fix cars that need to be fixed..
Awesome video, teardowns are always fun.
When you pulled the head bolts and mentioned the smell, I smelled it too. Disassembled many of the old V-8s from 70's and 80's and they all have that funky head bolt smell. I think its just ageded old oil that gets between the threads and bakes over time.
Loved this video, there were so many parts where I was like “what” lol when you pulled out the saw too that was so funny, overall a great teardown!!!
Whoever did the tune owes this guy a new engine.
Owner partially to blame, wasn't doing oil changes and didn't use Antifreeze for coolant.
The owner is also to blame for not doing proper maintenance....
I think the owner is lucky his insurance company paid the claim since it had been tuned.
I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here since it was tuned.....I bet it was revved way above the red line....
@@billyparkinson9933 Yep, that and the fact he wasn't keeping his oil changed, etc. can make an engine go South.
That was cool. I learned something regarding the “star pattern” of the fuel spray I didn’t know that. Thanks
Everything is a hammer 🔨⚒
You should have called in Eric for this one, he would love it.
Excellent video! Root cause analysis is very educational.
28:48 Yes Ray you did loosen them.
They call them stealerships for a reason.
Omg can they live
On this one they didn't want to do the job because of this engine. They're definitely stealerships but it's common practice for shops to price themselves out of doing a job without saying it
Man I love land rovers. You can drive them around and when needed you put the car in spicy mode and your engine doubles as a claymore mine.
You can fix anything with a big hammer, air chisel, and concrete saw cutting blade! Also big pry bars too. Malice in the combustion palace. Haha
The 3.0 Eco Diesel is a Dodge Ram engine, the 3.0 Powerstroke was originally a Peugeot design. It was used by land Rover and then inherited by Ford when they bought Land Rover. Ford modified it slightly to make the 3.0 Powerstroke.
No,other was around it's ford/ Peugeot developed, Lion engine, which LR used to replace their 5cyl 2.5 TDI when bought by ford. Series 1 was 2.6 series 2/3 3.0
LR now use an even bigger pile, Ignium
YAY! Cody's in the house!
Have a 98 ford ranger, took it to a ford dealer for a spark plug change. Theydid a compression test and said it needed a new engine for 7 K. I replaced the plugs, wires, and coil. It run great. Who would put 7 K in a 98 Ranger withover 200,000 miles. Bad Beach Ford dealership in my opinion. Will never spend one cent there...
Great vid Ray!

As Sterling Marlin answered when asked what happened to his motor, "it blowed up" 😅
And by the way I do find your videos very interesting because I do a little work myself but your videos helps me understand why something happens the way they do so thank you Ray
The chain between the camshafts snapped first, the camshaft locked up the piston hit the valves, and the rest is history.
As soon at that engine saw those crocs CP had on, it puked on them in its last act of defiance.
😂😂😂😂
Glad my 98 Ford E250 has the reliable 4.2 L V6 Essex engine
Excellent video. Same/similar motor on UK Discovery 3, cranks break, my mate's did!! Landrover don't want to know...
Patience is a virtue, and virtually impossible.
LR Time just done a strip down on same engine and it was due to a recent cambelt install that caused a missfire. then the recovery driver started it and bang went the engine.
Yes. They've even got the new ventilation ports in the same spots.
Yup this one was tuned to hot
This has been a fascinating Raymond Ray's Auto Repair "We Do Cars" Ford Eco-Diesel Engine Tear Down with lots of carnage Episode!
Bet the wrist pins are good to go! Eric actually found a damaged wrist pin. Bet he has it framed and on his wall.
Truck owner blew this engine up. It didn't just fail.
beautiful rainman back with a smile :D
You guy's are having waaaaaay to much fun.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They obviously love what they do!
I have this engine in my Citroen C5 III, and also Peugeot uses it. great reliable engine when serviced correctly.
Nice one Ray interesting video
Good morning Ray 🌄
It would be interesting to see a dye penetrant inspection around the wrist pin holes on the other pistons to see if they were cracking in the same area.
Ray, you can still fix it. You can fix anything!
Yeah just weld some metal in the new inspection ports ..that's the ticket... wala it's fixed
I have a 2018 F150 Power Stroke. Change my oil around 20 - 30%. 135000 KMS, NOT TUNED. Runs great.
Another interesting and entertaining video. I think that piston, pin, and rod would be a great, "Everything Is A Hammer" T-shirt. 🛠
Show us your parts closet, i want to see how many shelves of brake clean you keep on stock....or is it just kept on the pallet? Love your channel, this teardown was cool to watch (because its not my vehicle).
Really enjoy the tear down episodes....
Interesting detour from the usual even if it is an excursion into "I do cars" territory. Thanks!
What a mess! Very interesting video thanks ray!!!
You were talking about the valve covers acting as the intake manifold. That for some reason made me think about my old [2001] VW Golf, and that I had never seen an air filter on the thing ! apparently it lives inside the engine cover ?? must look, see if my old mechanic ever found it !
Awesome video. You two are like kids in a candy store.
You two should do more collaboration videos. You work very well together.
Fascinating teardown. It's always interesting to see what failed when expensive machinery goes kablooie.
The engine failed when the valve train failed causing the exhaust valve to NOT open. This increased the compression ratio causing rapid wear of the piston and bearings with the subsequent failure of the conrod which then caused the rest of the damage. Exactly what failed in the valve train and in what order is difficult to say, but the observed movement of the pressed on cam lobe suggests that it was the initial point of failure and all other failures followed from there.
A very good video! 😁👍 Could the 'lean burn' have heated the upper part of the piston to cause it to expand and actually seize in the bore and thus cause it to crack...?
Bought me a nice truck from a dealer. They took it in after a bunch of piston material ended up through the oil pan. Then they took it in for the work needed and made sure it went past the 30 day mark. I will never buy from a used car dealer again! Oh and it lasted 3 days to begin with. Yay.
If it goes past the 30 day mark while sitting in their shop, it’s still under warranty. They scammed you.
"We make holes in block! We make holes in block!"
- Ford Motor Company
I’d agree with this as long as the journal on crank at failure point isn’t messed up I think connecting rod at big end broke free due to spin bearing potentially due to heat in crank as it appeared in video than subsequent revolutions broken connecting rod from piston while beating into head and oblonging small end which also snapped chain and moved valve lobe on cam
Not to be picky, but the Ecodiesel is the Italian built 3.0L diesel used in the Jeeps and Ram 1500's. The one in the Ford is a powerstroke 3.0L...... just saying.
And the Ford 3.0 v6 diesel is a collaboration engine with Peugeot. The VM Ram and the Lion Ford v6 engines both commit mechanical suicide with no warning. The VM ecodiesel has a whole bag of tricks to dienfrom like the hidden crap quality coolant hosebundernintake, broken cranks, slipped cam gears, and broken pistons like this one. I wonder if broken pistons are injector failures.
Its like a turtle. Hard shell and messy guts!
They may have changed the oil, but over its lifetime that lower oil pan gunk says it was not well maintained. It needed a cheap oil change with engine flush, then removal of that bottom oil pan and cleanup probably 10K miles ago, it also needed a timing including chain replacement. They may have skipped the chain when they did the timing or the belt last longer than the chain, and poor oil maintenance killed the chain and the engine. Maybe a violent hit of the cam by a piston could break the chain, though the combination of the crank turning the chain while the cam gear is getting hit by a piston could break it. This engine was worn out and if it had less than 200K miles had bad oil maintenance.
I was waiting for you to launch the water pump across the shop
The type of condition you find when someone fits a new piston without bothering, without all that costly 'engineering' work.
Woohoo! Disconnecting rod, piston McNuggets, and inspection ports😂😂
In the UK the 3.0 v6 diesel engine found in Jaguar XF/Land rover/Range rover were prone to cranks snapping or spinning bearings.
Are those steel toed safety Crocs that Cody has on?

$30K is the "Go away, I don't want to work on it" price.
Exactly!
I think you are correct on the over tune killing the motor!
But, the air intake you had wrong! The 3.0 was designed before the 6.7 ! That means the air intake for the 6.7 came from the 3.0 .
Companies for many years have been bought and sold and many crossover items took place. Even longer the contracts have been in place, like a detuned Cummins for Dodge, International for Ford and lets not forget Isusu for GM ! Duramax= Isusu just like Yanmar=John Deere.
Cummins actually designed the 25 thru 40 HP engine for Branson/TYM tractors.
It's nothing to do with Brand Loyalty but buy outs and contracts !!
