The owner's manual says you can expect the change oil message to come up every 12000-16000km. Seems like quite a long time between oil changes. Can anyone comment?

We think that is still too long, 12KM to long. What we see are cars that have no oil on the dipstick, that is really the issue. If you can go 12KM and the dip stick still reads full, then less of an issue. Frequent oil changes are still best way to protect engine.
